Re: K bike, still own one, or what do your ride now?

I still have a facelift K1200RS as well as two older Honda Africa Twins (1988 RD03 and 1996 RD07a). I love the K1200RS and don't feel the need to change it for a newer road bike. It is strong and reliable. I don't "need" more than its 130hp. An ideal Sport Touring bike for me.

So a man walks into a bar, and sits down. He starts a conversation with an old guy next to him. The old guy has obviously had a few. He says to the man:
"You see that dock out there? Built it myself, hand crafted each piece, and it's the best dock in town! But do they call me "McGregor the dock builder"? No! And you see that bridge over there? I built that, took me two months, through rain, sleet and scoarching weather, but do they call me "McGregor the bridge builder"? No! And you see that pier over there, I built that, best pier in the county! But do they call me "McGregor the pier builder"? No!"
The old guy looks around, and makes sure that nobody is listening, and leans to the man, and he says: "but you fuck one sheep..."

Re: K bike, still own one, or what do your ride now?

With the price of a mint condition, 2002, K1200RS, with only 20,000 miles, and a full documented history of services and receipts going for only $3750, I can't imagine why anyone on the face of the planet would not be riding a K-bike, or at least own one. IMO, it has to be the most overlooked and undervalued "Best Used Bike" on the market. I imagine most people could buy this bike for cash from their change bowl. And just look at what you get for chump change, electronic cruise control, power assist abs brakes, 130 smooth usable horsepower, shaft drive, tele-lever fork, and timeless good looks. And I might add, an amazingly exciting diversity of paint schemes. Has there ever been a motorcycle offered with so may paint choices? Some of the paint schemes remind me of those beautiful 50's era Corvettes. Why not create that bike you always dreamed of, that one-off custom, that special K-bike you bring to the rally? Why not buy back that krs/gt that you miss? With the new middle-class tax cut maybe it's time to start looking through the classifieds?

Well said Tim.

I’m very glad I kept my 1997 Taxi - I’m sure it will still be going strong when my K13 is in a skip.

Re: K bike, still own one, or what do your ride now?

I'm think about a twin also. I have a friend who is on the fence. He was a long time K bike rider and then drank the cool aid in the form of an RR. Now he is thinking of going back for various reasons. I'm headed up to the garage to strip a final drive off a rear fork for my old bike to have another few miles. This is just preemptive maintenance.

04' GT with 180+ K miles and a R1150 GS.

The GS is fun to plod along on and tackle the "road less traveled".

My GT brings a smile to my face every ride. Smooth, great acceleration, and she is beautiful.

Should be another option in the poll. “Still own a K bike just so I can be eligible for ROTY”

My 2003 K1200GT is on its last leg so I am adding another midsize bike to commute on. I’ll keep the K for occasional 2 up weekend rides though. Too high center of gravity and too high maint to keep commuting on.

Re: K bike, still own one, or what do your ride now?

My Kbike is now 12 years old and there's not one bike on the market I'd trade or sell it for except maybe a K1300S... While I have a few minor issues at the moment, the bike has been virtually expense-free since I bought it..

I'll admit I'm looking at buying a lightweight sport bike to play in the mountains on.. Probably another Ducati or MV, but keeping the mighty k is a no-brainer... It's still love with every twist of the throttle..

Still ride my K1300S and just added a very different kind alongside the two inline 4 sisters.
Can't hide that I'm a happy man and every morning is a delightful moment as I have to make a choice in the garage.
The K passed a while ago the 100,000km and many travels are still ahead of her.

Re: K bike, still own one, or what do your ride now?

The 2014 Triumph Rocket III is a fond memory now. My 2006 K1200R 'Bebe' still remains for when I get the urge. Once one experiences the superior suspension compliance and overall handling attributes of the Hossack or Saxxon Motadd front suspensions electronic gimmickry and moto-journalist hype expose themselves as disappointingly empty as the Santa Clause tale.

A couple days ago on a Rocket III forum, some 30ish, R3 novitiate was AGAIN vapidly defending telescopic forks for their 'feel', lighter weight and the fact that all extreme performance motorcycles use them. I asked him how esoteric 'Feel' entering a corner at 125+mph and a couple pounds less 'weight' on an 800lb power cruiser makes any practical difference to the typical demographic of those purchasing a Rocket III?

BMW decided to appease the uninformed Luddites like the aforementioned R3 devotee when they hobbled the R1200R WC with traditional, high priced pogo-sticks. Sorry BMW, Homey don't play.

Re: K bike, still own one, or what do your ride now?

I still own my 2004 1200 GT and love it. But as time has passed, my bike is getting to young for me. I cant stretch out and have none of the luxuries that I want in my older years.
I will be selling or trading in my immaculate GT for a 2017 or 18 1200 RT fully loaded, after i recoup from my knee replacement surgery I had yesterday.
May as well enjoy luxury riding now that I am 65 and have all the communications, music, and every thing else at my finger tips. Sounds good to me and that is where my new ride and journey takes me.

Re: K bike, still own one, or what do your ride now?

I know the feeling RIP concerning the knees. I can't bend my right knee as far due to a 1980 injury. Easier for me to ride my GS, but every time I get on my 04'GT, I'm in love again.

Re: K bike, still own one, or what do your ride now?

I have owned 4 K-bikes. The one that I had the longest was a K75S, which I bought new in 1990. I had it for 27 years, but last year I decided to sell it. I just wasn't putting any miles on it. I sold it to a guy who was working on my business building. He's as happy on it as I was when it was new to me.

So now I'm a GS guy. In 2010 I did a fly-and-rent to California to attend Craig's Death Valley rally. I rented an R1200GS. Basically it was a 1500 mile test ride. I really liked it, and when I got back to NC I bought one new before the end of the month. I also traded another K-bike, a K12R Sport (aka Schwarz) when I bought the GS. The GS now has 70,000 miles on it, and has been pretty bulletproof, except for the fuel sensor strip in the tank. Last fall I bought another GS, a 2001 R1150GS. It's a completely different ride than the 1200, more like a cruiser, but still a great ride.

I don't know if it has been mentioned, but my age is a contributing factor to switching to the GS. I'm now 67, and I just don't need 160+ HP anymore. In truth, I never needed it, and the GS's power is more than adequate. Throw in a more comfortable riding position, and it's a slam dunk.

In all seriousness, is there anything finer than a K1200/K1300 GT for hauling your ass for the most miles and the most smiles at the same time? I don't think so.

Re: K bike, still own one, or what do your ride now?

I put 36K miles on my 09 K 1300 GT, She just felt too top heavy for me. I sold and then purchased my R 1200 RT . Weights are not that far off but the R feels so much lighter. Miss the intensity of the K bike but equally happy with my R.

Re: K bike, still own one, or what do your ride now?

Finally sold my lava-colored 09k13s after advertising it for a year. Finally had to bring the price down to $5750. As you know the lave paint job is magnificent, especially in the sunlight.
Always got compliments on the color everywhere I went. The guy that bought it got a hell of a deal IMHO. The low price these bikes are bringing is an example of how the market has changed over the last decade. I still think these bikes can't be beat as a very sporty touring mechine. I still have my 2013 black on black k13s, and probably will have it for a while yet. However, I think a s1000r decked out like Charlie's (aka Kneedragger) is in my near future. Always fun to try something new.

Did you have that on clist? I should have bought it...just to far away. Tried to get my brother in Seattle interested. It looked perfect.

Re: K bike, still own one, or what do your ride now?

I had it listed on clist in the major metro areas throughout the West and on Cycletrader, and it still only generated a little interest. Just demonstrates that there aren't many people interested in the k bike, or used bikes like this. Could also be that the used bike market is slow in general right now. Dunno. On the flip side, there are really good deals out there if you're in the market. Interested in a 2013 k13s, black on black with only 10k miles?

Re: K bike, still own one, or what do your ride now?

Just an FYI... Forget about Clist.. next time, sell your bike on eBay...

I sold my last 4-5 bikes there.. all sold within 6 days.. all at higher than market value.. Never met any of the buyers.

as I recall they charge a flat-rate fee of around $250 or so... It's the only way to go..
