will the production costs be recouped and the tech brought to less expensive mainstream bikes? Is this just for race teams?

Carbon put to good use!

Nice to see something other than cosmetic from such a structural orientated fiber.

I read (can't remember where now. There's been hundreds of articles on the HP4 Race) that the whole reason for doing it was to experiment with the potential for mass produced carbon frames. The author speculated that the carbon fiber chassis tech would trickle down to production bikes. Just at what cost?!?

Re: MOST EXCLUSIVE BMW MOTORCYCLE EVER MADE

If the cost come down enough, it'd make sense.
it's not like we can really and cost effectively repair the frame of a K12R o S1KRR anyway. Once cracked is gone.

Seems to me like carbon would be a winning proposition and even stronger and of course lighter.

Re: MOST EXCLUSIVE BMW MOTORCYCLE EVER MADE

There's a great article by Michael Rutter in Performance Bikes Magazine, May 2018, comparing the performance, manufacturing and parts of the S1000RR road bike (Performance Bikes' 2018 shagged test mule), HP4Race and Rutter's Macau GP S1000RR race bike. Rutter's take, and I guess he has some insight from someone at BMW (just my opinion since they were surely with the HP4Race), is that there are several things that will trickle down to mainstream production from the HP4Race. Specifically mentioned are electronics and, in his eyes, the carbon fiber frame technology. Guess we'll see.

Amazingly, at Valencia, the road going version was about 3.6 seconds behind Rutter's bike, which was faster than the HP4Race, with Rutter riding all three. Yes, three and a half seconds on a track is a long time, and the brakes and suspension on the road bike were suffering, but still..... Also mentioned in the article was that Rutter lapped the Isle of Man course on the stock road bike, with road tires, at 118mph (could have gone faster with better road conditions). This year the fastest lap was 135.4mph. All factoids of how well sorted the standard RR really is.

Question Re: MOST EXCLUSIVE BMW MOTORCYCLE EVER MADE

Sooooo....

How recyclable is carbon fiber???

And can you just keep on recycling or are there a limited number of cycles?

Re: MOST EXCLUSIVE BMW MOTORCYCLE EVER MADE

Based on how it's made, I would imagine CF isn't too recyclable because of the sum of its components. Has a very high melting point as well. I'm sure someone, somewhere is figuring that stuff out.
