Gas tank gauge seems to have failed . . .

I have a 2005 K1200S, completely stock, with about 19K miles. Today when I went for a ride the gas gauge was reading empty and starting its "countdown". I knew I had at least a gallon of gas. Stopped off to fill up the tank and the gauge was still reading empty but the countdown had stopped at zero. Any one experience this? I'm guessing it's the sensor but I really have no idea. Is the gas sensor in the tank a mechanical/electrical affair or all electric?

Never mind. I did an internet search and found many instances where this problem has occurred. The fuel gauge (strip) failure is common. Cheap part + $300 labor and it's fixed. Great.

BMW will warranty it for 12 years after the bike went into service.
You may be past the 12 years but I would still ask a dealer if BMW will replace it for you.

Yes thanks. I saw where BMW was extending warranty for the failure but I didn't think I'd have a chance at that since the bike is 13 years old and I'm the second owner. But I will check it out.

It surely doesn't. Thanks.

I called the local dealer and the service manager said that they would fix it under warranty. He also stated that it's the ethanol in our gasoline that destroys the fuel gauge strip. The bikes were designed to run on pure gasoline, like they have in Germany.

Dropped my K1200S off at the local BMW shop for this warranty work -- no charge. But, I'm having them do the full 18K service so my bill will probably be about $1300.

Glad you got that strip fixed. I don't think we have that fuel problem in the UK - and I should hope not at 6.00 per gallon.

The service may not be quite as expensive as you think - I doubt if any valve shims will need changing, and it will purr like a pussycat once they've finished.

I see from your signature that you had a Yamaha XS750. I bought a 1972 Yamaha XS650 in 1972. It was my third bike and I really loved it. Rode it back and forth across the US. I also had a 2000 Honda CBR1100XX, the Blackbird. Also a wonderful bike.

I always wanted a K1200RS. Every time I see one for sale on Craigslist I get that itch again.
