Re: Tires, what do you like, New Poll, 2012

I'd vote for the Bridgestone BT-023, if that was on the list.
I think it should be, acshuly, along with the Dunlop RoadSmart 2, the Michelin PR2/PR3 and Pirelly Angel.

These tires should be but the poll function is limited to 28 items. Suggestions were solicited. Next years poll will be up dated and zero or one vote items will be eliminated of course. beech

I've used the 023s on the K13S and they do last pretty well. Once warm, they stick on good pavement to the edges but turn in and transition seem just ok. They certainly have nothing on the PR2s other than price but they are light years better than the old BT-021s which were the crappiest tire I have ever had on a motorcycle.

IMHO, of course.

You are right!! You don't get it!!

... Ok, I'll give-

The KS is not really a sport bike so it often gets pressed into other kinds of service that it handles quite well like sport-touring (factory bags and comfy ergos) or commuting (available locking top cases and reasonable 40mpg+ mileage) both of which greatly benefit from...

Wait for it...

Sport touring tires!!!!

Shocking, I know.

YHO well taken! Thanks! I agonized for a long time over PR2 vs BT-023.
They do seem to roll in rather slowly, but I don't mind. Once over, they're rock stable tho(for me)

I see good things about Dunlop Roadsmart 2, that may very well be my next experiment.

.. just to balance the poll, I unequivocally HATE the Dunlop Roadsmart tires !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Never have I had a set of tires try to put us into the cheap seats so often. I took them off and threw them away at 3000 miles, thankful that I made it that far. Hate 'em.

A nice combo of little input and decent wear.

Tim,

I'm not looking to change you mind as there's nothing for me to gain in doing so (besides, I LOVE the MICHELINS) but I've HEARD (third party) that the Roadsmart2's are supposed to be much improved.

ALL the Dunlop tires I've tried (that came with the bikes) were crap, so unless I run out of choices, I'm not spending my money on them. BUT things can always change for the good or the bad, so it's possible they're great now. Until all other choices I consider superior let me down, I wouldn't spend my money on them. Now, if Dunlop wants me to evaluate a set for free, I might do it . For now, I'm a Pilot Road 3 guy .

I have ran Q2's on my 07 K1200S and have a set ready to go for my RR and think I will put them on my KS when the stock tires are toast.
I will say they don't last long - but I don't try and get every last rotation out of rubber - in fact I toss tires way before they ever become a question mark for me.

I used them long before I had ever gone to CSS - but if they are good enough for that type of riding and abuse - they are good enough for me. I don't ride as agrressively on the street as I do on the track. And the few CSS I have gone to - never once did I feel any lack of traction - sure in heck scared myself most of the day. Going into turns way to hot - no choice but to tip the bike in at angles that I never achieve on the street. Braking so hard that it feels like the tires are going to let go any second - tires were flawless.

Not to mention at the price point for these tires they are the least expensive when I add up miles per dollars.

I would have to agree Bruce. At CSS, I inquired about the tires, and was told they last 2-3 days, at 15-20 sessions per day, 4-5 laps per session, hard to beat. I rode mine in rain for 2 sessions there, and had no issues with grip, and they had just been scrubbed in the day before! As a school attendee, they will also sell them to you for $235.00 per set!

Re: Tires, what do you like, New Poll, 2012

I have the Metzler m3's that came on the k1300r, I have only done 3000km and mostly commuting, so I'm still getting to know the bike before I judge the tyres performance. They are a bit uncertain in the wet, but generally ok
I ran PR3's on my Kawasaki and was very happy with them, performance in the wet was amazing, in the dry was pretty good too, got 11,000km out of them. Front pr3 was always in top shape by the time the rear was done, and when the rear looks shabby it dropped off real quick.
If I do go with pr3's on the K1300r, I might try the pilot pure on the front and pr3 on the back for even wear and greater front end performance. Best price I have seen in Sydney for PR3's is about $450 fitted.
Anyway, got to get to know this bike better first, punish these metzlers on some days off, and keep an eye on this thread for some more opinions.
I think loubre is planning to run some pr3's soon on a k13r, so we can quiz him.

Cheers

Re: Tires, what do you like, New Poll, 2012

Went shopping today for tyres that would last longer than 4000klm and narrowed it down to PR'3s and Z8 Roadtek.
I chose the Roadtek cause the tyre guy said that Hyabusa's are getting 12-15,000 klm's from them. He said tyre pressures are critical and they have to be scrubbed in gently

Anyway, Good Friday is ride day so we'll see what happens.

Re: Tires, what do you like, New Poll, 2012

Tyre guy is just a sperm burp. I get there with the wheels yesterday, he takes one look at the rear BT016 that is trashed and sais i'll have an accident with the Z8's . He sais that i'm snapping the throttle open mid corner , which i'm not (I have found with the K that if you roll into a corner the bike wants to fall over, so you have to add a little throttle to keep it up) and he sais "bullshit, i've been in this business a long time and i can tell how people ride by looking at their tyres" so i wave him off and add that the Z8 is a Sport/Touring tyre, that the blurb sais it has exceptional grip on the edges and is harder in the centre for longer life, but he sais you have to get them hot for them to work properly and that i should run 38 and 36psi. So i tell him to put them on, and now he's all smiles. I warn him about the Tyre Pressure Sensors "you fuck em, you fix em" and he nods and sais he's done a heap of them.

So i call in on the way home to pick the wheels up. I check to make sure he has the correct sizes and ask what pressure he put in ? "42 and 38" he sais, and when i quiz him about his earlier statement he sais i'll have to play around with them and get them to where i feel comfortable with them.

If it wasn't for the fact that he is just around the corner from my office, and convenient, i would'nt bother going to him.

Re: Tires, what do you like, New Poll, 2012

That's too funny!!

I'd never bark at anyone like that. Had someone come in with a Chinese tire hard as a bowling ball he snagged off eBay. Almost broke my tire changer it was so damn hard. He came back 2 months later with the cord showing. Go figure?

Some people showing up with "Race Offs" or "Take Offs" they bought at the track saying "racing tires are the stickiest tires" when in fact they are very hard tires especially after they've been cooked on the track.

You should read this very informative article.
http://canyonchasers.net/shop/generic/tires.php

Quote:
Even the fastest street rider is probably not (and should not) be able to get a race-compound tire up to its optimum temperature to reap the benefits of the added traction.

And, always know the age of your tire even if you buy them "New". You'll be surprised how old some tires are.

Anyway, I think you have a great tire. I can't believe he didn't listen to your instructions! And he's been in the business for how long? I'll send you one of those Chinese tires to try on him.

42 and 38 ( rr and fr?) Sounds about right with what most would ride on here.
How much did he charge you?

Re: Tires, what do you like, New Poll, 2012

Tuesday i put the wheels back on and yesterday i gave the bike a wash, after last weekends rain ride. I thought i'd adjust the pressures back to 38 and 36 psi for the scrub in, seeing as though he set them at 42 and 38, and i find that the rear is 36 and the front is 35 . I usually check tyre pressures with the digital display pumps they have at service stations and i have my own old style pen shaped device that the bar comes out of the end with the calibrations on it. Both devices always read the same, so what are the odds of them both being exactly wrong. I'll ckeck them again today, maybe they are going down

Louis, we Down Under get charged the special rate of $450 for a set of these tyres . The PR3's are $440 and most other tyres are similar prices.

You should read this very informative article.

And, always know the age of your tire even if you buy them "New". You'll be surprised how old some tires are.

Anyway, I think you have a great tire. I can't believe he didn't listen to your instructions! And he's been in the business for how long? I'll send you one of those Chinese tires to try on him.

Thanks for that link, very informative. I'll set the pressures to BMW specs and make sure they stay that way

I've done 1100klm on the Z8's set at 36 and 42psi and to look at them you would think they were brand new.
I am very impressed with them and have been riding as hard as i dare and they give no hint at all of wanting to let go or move around. I can predict with certainty that they will last twice as long as any other tyre i've had.

I was told by one expert ??? that either the Angels or PR3's would be the best tyres for the K1300.

So whats happening on the land ?, getting enough rain ?

I didn't realise farming was a job i thought it was more a lifestyle

Interesting topic of discussion on the radio the other day asking what defines "the bush" from "the outback". The city slicker clowns were saying one tank of juice away from the coast is the outback

Re: Tires, what do you like, New Poll, 2012

I am on my second set of tires. I went with the Michellan Pilot Road 3. I bought the bike with Metzler Z6 and were a couple of years old with 1000 miles which were ok, but the PR3's are a way better feel. I have't ridden in the rain yet so I can't report on that. I read previous threads on this forum and other forums and the reviews were great for the PR 3's. My bike runs more smooth and in the corners it really grips the road. I probably don't ride as aggressive as a lot of other riders, but I can hold my own on the twisties. I will have to report later about the mileage, but the first 400 miles have been great.

Re: Tires, what do you like, New Poll, 2012

Cool.
The Pilot Powers have a softer sidewall and flex a lot and grip really good. Bridgestone has a stiffer sidewall.
Go to a tire store and hold one of these tires in each hand. Feel the weight. Feel the sidwalls.

A stiff sidewall transmits the road feel better, you feel every pebble, hence you can tell better when the tire, especially the rear, is about to break away.
However I think softer sidewall of the PP produces a larger contact patch.

Will the Bridgestone breakaway sooner? I da know? Ask Kneedragger.

So, if I ride with my knee on the ground, and I don't, I would probably prefer the Bridgestone. I'm like you so the PP are great.

I can do a buck and a nickle over a nicley cambered overpass without any sweat.

Re: Tires, what do you like, New Poll, 2012

My new favorite tire is the Pirelli Diablo Rosso Corsa. These are the stickiest, most confidence-inspiring sport tires I have ever used. I now have 3800 miles on them, and they are not down to the wear markers... I will easily get 4K miles out of them. The quality that is most impressive to me is that, in spite of being close to the end of their life, the grip and handling is still very much like when they were brand new... I will definitely be getting another set...

P.S. If you're a ham-fisted throttle and brake abuser, or wear out your front and rear tires at different rates, YMMV...

Re: Tires, what do you like, New Poll, 2012

I haven't tried the Pilot Power 3, Allen... it's my understanding that the Power 3 is the successor to the Power Pure, which I loved. The one negative characteristic I've experienced with Michelin tires in general (and I've probably used more Michelins than any other) is that their grip and handling qualities seem to deteriorate when there is still adequate tread depth... quicker than most other brands I've used. Maybe it's just something about my riding style... I don't know. But I think the Pilot Power 3's are definitely worth a try... let us know if you decide to try them...

Re: Tires, what do you like, New Poll, 2012

The main beef about the 2CT (possibly the 3 too) I heard from a "few" riders was making sure the tire had some heat in them BEFORE you grab some throttle on any turn.
Usually a few miles would get them warm.

The main scenario was stopping for a break at some cafe during a nice ride. Tires cool off.
Then with people looking at your bike, getting complements, girls (or guys..shish) winking at you, you BLAST OFF in a dramatic fashion and end up doing a Pee Wee Herman at the first curve.

I've got a ton of friends though who like them.
I think I'll try that Diabolic Diablo on my R1 as soon as I can smoke off the Tomahawk I have on it now.

Pirelli has several Diablos with similar sounding names, so be sure you get the Rosso Corsas...

Re: Tires, what do you like, New Poll, 2012

On my R6 I run 2ct's and love them. Last about 6k on the front and 3k on the rear and pretty much only canyon carving (aka tearing up backroads) with great feedback and sticky. On my sport touring bikes I've run Road 2's and more recently Road 3's and love them. I tried the Road 2's on my sport bike and didn't notice much mileage difference just a slight loss in grip so I went back to the 2ct's but on the more touring bikes I still prefer the Road 3 (Concours, Vstrom, ST2 and now K1200rs).

Re: Tires, what do you like, New Poll, 2012

It's been a while since this post, but just out of interest, how many miles were you getting out of the Q2's on your 1200s Bruce? We recently fitted a set to my Ducati 1098, which my Son took to Hallet Raceway for a trackday yesterday. His feedback of the Q2's, were that they stuck like glue! The tires certainly looked pretty scuffed up.

I currently Have Metzler Sportec's fitted to my 1300s, which need to be replaced with barely 3,000 miles of use. While I certainly haven't been unhappy with the Metzler, and while I don't mind sacricing miles for good grip, I'm not looking to get much less than 3,000 miles out of a set of tires for a bike that I run on the road.

Q2 fitted to my Ducati 1098 after one days "mild" track day use.

Rob:
The Q2's are a good deal as far as miles per dollars go. I think about 4K miles is about the best I remember getting. And that was when I was actively trying to get mileage out of them - taking it easy and all that.

The new Q3's might be better - don't know anything about them yet.

Re: Tires, what do you like, New Poll, 2012

I'm sticking with Dunlop - just ordered a set of Q3's. My problem is which bike to put them on. I have a set of Q2's that I was going to install on the RR. But the KS needs tires as well. So do I stick to the plan RR gets the 2's and the KS gets the 3's?

I guess it doesn't matter. The RR will rip up either set in about 2.5 K miles. The KS seems to chew up a set in about 4K - 4.5K miles.

Reviews have been good for the Q3's only concern for the KS is how they act in the rain the 2's were okay.

Re: Tires, what do you like, New Poll, 2012

I was so impressed with the Q2's on my 1098, that I fitted a set of Q3's on to my 1300s a few weeks back. That same weekend, I ended up taking the 1300s for a track day . Again, I was really impressed with the way the bike handled, sticking to the track well (and could have been better if I had lowered the pressures two or three PSI, instead of just keeping my normal road pressures). I can't say how the Q3's are in the rain, as I haven't been caught out in the wet stuff yet. As long as I can get more than than 3,500 miles out of the rear tire, I'll be happy (that's all I appear to get out of my previous Metzler, Michelin tires on my 1200/1300s's, which has been, and is mainly two up riding ).

I guess it doesn't matter. The RR will rip up either set in about 2.5 K miles. The KS seems to chew up a set in about 4K - 4.5K miles.

Reviews have been good for the Q3's only concern for the KS is how they act in the rain the 2's were okay.

Norazli

What about the Pirelli Angel GT - they seem to be getting good write-ups...

Rob:

I'm going to put the Q3's on the KS. Hoping they are better in the rain than the Q2's. Q2's are not bad in the rain - since I don't ride the RR in the rain -well only if I get caught - the Q2's will be fine. The KS I ride more and travel with it so will see how the 3's work. I never ride two up these days so that helps me get a few more miles out of my tires than you. My KS has 4K miles on the clock - rear tire could possibly go another 500 miles - front - plenty of tread left - but cupped pretty good.

I never go for every last mile out of tires - heck I keep them for an emergency - some riders would like to have my old tires - they would stretch anothe 1K miles out of them.

Re: Tires, what do you like, New Poll, 2012

Interesting results in this poll.

Michelin seems too be the runaway favorite. Is that due to deft marketing, extraordinary performance, or that BMW riders and riders in general simply live to throw money at their machines?

Re: Tires, what do you like, New Poll, 2012

Just ordered a set of Pilot road3s. I liked the PR2s so far and feel it may wear out by the time we are done with the KY redneck rally. So will change and hit DGR.
