Re: Tires, what do you like, New Poll, 2012

I put the Q2's on my RR. I have a set of Q3's that I'm going to put on the KS. I'm going to try and go 4,500 miles on the original tires.

The Q3's are noticiably different than the Q2's.

Hiya

Just booked my 2012 K13S in for its first set of new tyres at 10,000km replacing the OEM Metzler M3s. After much research have decided to go with the Pirelli Angel GT (A) spec which will be fitted on Friday.

My local BMW dealer here in Perth advises that I am the first bike the be fitted with these new babies, so I am looking forward to a ride on Saturday to test them out...

Piccies to follow.

I can't see that anyone would be dissapointed with the GT's. I'll be interested in you're comments.

Re: Tires, what do you like, New Poll, 2012

Switched from the first Metzelers that came on the bike to Bridgestone Battlax T30 .
Done about 7000 km with the Metzelers.

Always loved the grip of the bridgestones on my VFR, and the new T30 is perfect!

Did 2000 km with them already, and the grip is perfect on both dry and wet roads .
Keep in mind we have more "rain" and bad roads then you guys ;-)

The dual compound tire is a pretty magical thing. An overstatement? They way I ride, I got 3100 miles out of the OE 'stones on my K1600GT and I get about 6000 miles out of Pilot Road 3 tires in my normal use. I put on a new set of PR3s and rode over 3,000 miles of highway from the right coast to the Big Horn Mtns, Beartooth, and Going to the Sun Rd where I rode the living snot out of the tires in dry and pouring rain, and then rode 4,000 miles the long way home, through the Rockies but again mostly on highways. The front will go another several thousand miles and the rear is shot but it made it home from a 7100 mile loop.

Why would I ever try another tire after that kind of experience?

That's where I'm at with the PR3 as well Wes.

I feel like they are good enough for me to feel good using them on the street pounding them and their longevity is awesome. I have a stockpile of partially used tires that I'm finishing up, but for the foreseeable future I don't plan to buy anything but PR3 rears other than track use.

That's incredible, especially on such a heavy bike. I've used my first pair over 2K miles on the K1300S, with very aggressive riding (fast and hard in the twisties), and they still look like brand new, fully round. The stock M3s were halfway done by then. Waiting for the K1600GT Sport to become available to do the swap. Will also use PR3s in the K16 .

Re: Tires, what do you like, New Poll, 2012

Whilst riding New Year Eve.... front tyre suddenly lost pressure.... quick glance at the pressure montitoring numbers to see them tumble fairly swiftly!.... bring the K13 to a halt safely and jump off to look at the front tyre... Looks to be delaminating??.... Long story short, local Yamaha dealer was till open and trailered me into his workshop... could not give me the replacement ContiSportAttack that just failed... but had a Bridgestone BT-021... round ... black.... correct size.... and would contain some air.... good enough!...

Not sure if it can be clearly seen from the pictures but sections of tread are just peeling away!.... and what look like a bubble section can be seen from the inside?....

Anyway.... no harm done and I got home safely!.... Question is what now?... change the back Conti for a BT-021?... or get a new Conti for the front?... just lost confidence in them after this episode?!?.... or scrap the pair regardless of wear and stick on 2 new Angel GT's??..... seem to be the tyre of the moment!?!....

Interesting, I would love to know from a tire authority what causes what you refer to as a bubble section. I lost a truck tire to this same issue during the fall. In my case the tire was on the last 20% of its service life, but I had never seen anything like it until your third picture which looks exactly like my truck tire did.

I'd be making some serious complaints, getting my money back, buying the Angel GT's and never going near another set of Continental Tyres, ever

The quality that is most impressive to me is that, in spite of being close to the end of their life, the grip and handling is still very much like when they were brand new... P.S. If you're a ham-fisted throttle and brake abuser, or wear out your front and rear tires at different rates, YMMV...

Pirelli DRCs are also my favourite all purpose tyre. They will happily take a proper trackday in the wet (I was knee down in a torrential day at Silverstone on DRCs), and they don't overheat on hot dry days. Certainly lack the ultimate dry grip of SuperCorsas, but DRCs are a far better road tyre.

How many miles did you get out of your DRCs on the K13S? I'm wondering if I should go for DRCs for the KS, or something more touring oriented...

Ade, I've seen very little information on this tire in the rain. Tell me more! I have a set in the garage waiting to go on the next change.

I got 5K miles from them... a combination of aggressive sport riding and touring. I have never gotten close to that with any other sport tire...

I ran the DRCs at a wet trackday at Silverstone on my old GSX-R1000 K6 when water was not clearing due to the torrential rain. Quite simply, they were astounding! They don't offer the same levels of wet grip as a PR3 or racing wet, but they offered sufficient levels of grip and gradual breakaway that gave plenty of confidence to find the limits.

5000 miles of aggressive riding/touring on rosso corsa's means that is my next tire.

Re: Tires, what do you like, New Poll, 2012

There is a P4 out there now. Might be the way to go. I am going to set up a new poll in a few days, can't get any bites in the shout. Please PM me with tire preferences to list in the poll. I will limit it to new editions and popular tires with an "other" option which I hope folks will submit comments on. I have had good luck with Z8's, huge miles and good performance. I also like M5's. You can tell I'm a tourist eh? There is a Diablo out there with my name on it I suspect.

Surprising longevity on the DRC. I shredded a set of DR in approximately 2100 miles on my boxer, and those are supposedly harder and longer wearing than the Corsa's.

Beech, Pirelli Angel GT appear to be the new 'hot' tire with our friends in Australia, while the Diablo Rosso Corsa has gotten some recent good words in this thread!

I think it's fair to say that the DRC and Angel GTs are completely different types of tyre and really should not be compared. At the end of the day, it depends on your use and style of riding: the DRC is really a track/road tyre designed for superbikes/sportsbikes where responsiveness/dry/wet grip is important, and they need heat in them to perform best. Longevity should not be its forte.

The Angel GT is more akin to the Z8 and other ubertouring tyres where longevity and wet grip are optimised at lower operating temps, especially for heavier bikes.

For the road, my next door neighbour runs the Rosso IIs which he praises big time for all round road hooliganism and touring.

Re: Tires, what do you like, New Poll, 2012

Here is what I picked up from Michelin's PR4 marketing blurb. Quoting (cut and paste) ...

Michelin Pilot Road 4 Rear Tires
The Michelin Pilot Road 4 tires represent the latest iteration and next generation of Pilot Road evolution. Designed to deliver maximum safety in most conditions especially on wet roads and in particular when braking, Michelin's goal is to cover all riders in all conditions. Touting both enhanced safety and extended tire life, the Pilot Road 4 tires are a tangible illustration of Michelinís Total Performance strategy of constantly and simultaneously improving tire performance characteristics across the range.
The Pilot Road 4 tires will be available in three versions, the standard PR4, PR4 Trail for enduro and ADV bikes that are primarily ridden on-road and the PR4 GT for heavier, touring bikes. The Pilot Road 4 GT tires are already the OEM choice for the new BMW R1200RT.
Superior wet-weather performance
  • Michelin Pilot Road 4 tires stop shorter in the wet vs. the leading competitive sport touring tires and Michelin Pilot Road 3
Longest tread life in its class
  • Up to 20% longer tread life than Michelin Pilot Road 3 tires
Dependable grip even in challenging conditions
  • 2 Compound Technology with all new silica-charged rubber compounds for excellent grip from 23įF to 113įF
  • New XST+ siping and enhanced tread patterns for optimum grip at all lean angles
Three separate versions available
  • Pilot Road 4 for all-around sport touring use
  • Pilot Road 4 GT has a stiffer casing with a patented new technology for motorcycle tires that delivers the stability you need for heavier GT-class bikes while riding solo, two-up or with luggage, and the comfort you desire
  • Pilot Road 4 Trail for adventure touring bikes ridden exclusively on the road

Re: Tires, what do you like, New Poll, 2012

First 3 days on the PR 4's, very good. Scrubbed in smoothly with no excessive releasing agent slippage. Got warm very quick and within a short while i was riding down to 15mm of the edge. Nice feel all round and on the armest day my confidence was much higher and pushed the limit to the edges.

After an hours tender riding.... Im liking the design of th etyre and good to know that (typically) I hit bad weather, my ride isnt going to have to slow down to much and im not going to get rigamortis from the tension of a borderline slick!

Will update when i get home again and get some more wear into them.

Thumbs up Pilot Road 3 Baby!!! (or 4?)

My K1300S came to me with a Sportec M3 and an M5. I forget which is on the front vs the rear (I'm too lazy to check and my drink is too good )

I had a set of Pilot Road 3's on my Triumph Tiger 955, and found them to be most excellent in both wet and dry. If those tires could make that tall mothersucker handle well , I expect them to be magic when I mount them on Das Rakete

Re: Tires, what do you like, New Poll, 2012

The PR 4's were the same price as the 3's and are reputably better. Im happy with them. Just waiting for the black stuff to get a bit warmer and i get truly to grips with the bikes handling before i push to the edges, but so far they have been great. Even hopping of some carelessly chosen cats eyes on a long bend i didnt feel any slip. After 10 mins from my house on straight, urban 30mph roads and then into a short series of bends at 50-70mph i pulled over after 5 mins to feel the warmth in them. Very impressed considering the tarmac was pretty cold. Cant wait to be in Spain in summer getting my knee down place my faith and vis-a-vi my arse in that few millimeters of rubber!

If the PR4's have indeed been made better then the PR3's, well

I like the PR3's enough that I bought another set of them even after hearing the PR4's were right around the corner.

Re: Tires, what do you like, New Poll, 2012

I changed tyres yesterday. The Pilot Road 3 rear and Pilot Power front (which wasn't one of my smartest choices) did just under 20,000 kms. The rear PR probably would have lasted a thousand more but the front PP should have gotten the flick a long time ago as the right hand side's been badly worn for a long time, and felt awful.

I'd gotten 17000 out of a previous set of PR3s, so was pretty happy with 20 out of this set.

I've now put on PR4s front and rear. .

Yesterday's rain was torrential and the PR4s felt so good and planted on the wet slippery roads. 20+ is achievable I reckon

I recently spooned on a Dunlop Sportmax Q3 up front to compliment an older Q2 in back. I really like all aspects to their feel and level of confidence they afford. I have about 3k miles on the rear and am about 1/2 way through its service life. Being that they're nearly half the price as Michelin's and some other lofty priced 'designer' brands at my local tire retailer I think I'll stick with em'

FR;

I like the Q2's and Q3's. I had a set of Q3's on my K1300S and the rear was worn pretty good at 2.5K miles - I was at the BRPR and stretched it to 3K miles but it was smoked. Great tire for grip but I can't get them to last on the KS.

Beech, the major players, plus the ones that got votes in this poll?

I currently use Bridgestone BT30 GT. I love them so far. Very sticky and great for 2 up. A definite improvement from the BT023. Time will tell. 2800 miles so far and they still look new.

Re: Tires, what do you like, New Poll, 2012

Pre 2007 before the advent of dual compound tyres most of the guys I know me included ran a sport tyre on the front and a touring tyre on the back and until 013 bought tyres in pairs now have reverted to type run a Road Smart on the back and a Sport Smart on the front which is like the Q3 without the hard centre.

Re: Tires, what do you like, New Poll, 2012

My Bridgestone T30 GT had the best ride of all the tires tried so far. But at only 5800 miles I will try PRs again. If they only go a little farther I will probably go back to the Bridgestone T30 GTs.

Anyone use any cheap tires?
I just snagged a Continental 190 rear tire for less than $100.

I change my Metz for the last update of the Bridgestone T-30R , very good grip but durability? , I am not sure ,see picture only 6000km or 3800 miles. Middle seems ok but the on each sides rubber is almost done. Like I said I tried the T30r may be I should try the Gt version for durability.

Some of the boys down here in Australia (Loubre & Paulmogs) are having very good results with wear and mileage from the T30GT's. K13S@man is about to put some on his K13S....

I have been having good luck with the Mich PR 4's. They really are great in wet weather. They are wearing better than the PR and PR 2's.
