Installation of HID lights into the K1300S

This is the installation of my K1300S HID lights showing the relevant stages, without the swearing and gnashing of teeth. It took me a couple of hours and included general buggerising around (procrastination) and incorrectly positioning one HID into the LHS pod. More on that later.

The first thing was to identify the relevant units and deciding to remove the grommets as there was to be no drilling of the pod covers in this procedure.

Once the above was done, the grommet was removed from the complete harness.

The completed unit sans grommet is shown below:

Note that the ballast is quite small about 5 cm x 7.0 cm (2.0 in x 2.5 in approximately) and the metal tag was removed prior to installation.
The ballast for my single HID Genisys unit was also quite small and very thin, but was much wider, almost a square and this caused me some issues when I came to install it into the Lo Beam position. Hence the swearing!

Let’s get the installation underway: Start with the RHS light pod. Now how the hell do I get the HID assembly in there? First you remove the ballast and sundry wiring from the HID light, decide which side the ballast is going, in this case I dress to the right Sir! Push the unit in and down to engage the Velcro. Probably a waste of time once all the wires are pushed in as well, nothing is going to move! http://www.i-bmw.com/attachment.php?...1&d=1505452898 http://www.i-bmw.com/attachment.php?...1&d=1505452898
Now attach the HID globe assembly and push all the wires into the headlight pod. The ballast is visible in the upper right of the light assembly. Voila! Now put the dust cover back on!
The same procedure was done for the LHS Hi-Beam pod believing that the wider Genisys unit would be best put in the Lo-Beam pod. Wrong, oh so wrong. It is wider and because there is little wiggle room above or below the light housing, you must put it in either the right or the left Hi-Beam position. Remove the original HID assembly from the LHS headlight pod and wiggle the ballast around to get it to fit! Does Sir dress to the left? He does now as that’s the only place the bloody thing will go! Once all the gubbins are in, there’s not a lot of room. Mind you it is easier to change the HID bulb, you pull out the wiring, unplug the light portion and stuff it all back in, once the assembly is reconnected. All because I didn’t check the width to see if it would fit into the pod – hindsight is always 20/20!!http://www.i-bmw.com/attachment.php?...1&d=1505452898
You can see the CAN BUS unit wiring on the bottom left of the shot (a thick red wire and a black wire). The actual unit is located in the upper right-hand side of the pod.
Once I had one light installed, I checked my wiring by starting the bike, Lo-Beam only at this stage. http://www.i-bmw.com/attachment.php?...1&d=1505452898

The whole installation took about two hours mainly due to:
• a cockup on my part, trying to decide which side to put the wider ballast unit, complete with the CAN BUS unit
• Low blood sugar and probably blood pressure from multiple scratches to hands
• Checking the wiring and ensuring the lights worked at the end of each step
• and much procrastination on my part
It will be a simple procedure to replace the HID section of all units as you gently pull the wiring leading to the ballast, disconnecting the HID globe unit, and then push all the wiring back in once the HID unit is installed.
I have yet to do a night test, but the Lo Beam unit shines well enough to illuminate the road once the sun had gone down. They do not impact oncoming vehicles and the units do not get hot! The assembly looks neat once the dust covers are back on and there is not rattling inside each pod! Thumbs up!!
The other thing I have noted is there is a slight delay in the Lo Beam coming on once the bike is started - probably less than half a second, so not really a concern! There is absolutely no delay with the Hi Beam units coming on and there is no flickering, maybe because one of the units has a CAN BUS attached. I am not removing this unit unless it becomes essential. Simply too much frigging around!
