Hesitating start after short stops???

I've noticed on my previous 2006 K1200S, and previous 2006 K1200GT and current 2005 K1200S at times when I stop and shut the bike down at gas station or when crossing the border when stoppage is couple of minutes, I turn the key on, wait for all checks to go through and the bike does not want to start as if battery is about to die??? This evening I stopped to fill up some gas. After filling, turned the key and awaited for all checks to complete, depressed the start key and same thing happened. It took me several tries, and at one moment, it sounded as if battery is toast. After fourth attempt the bike started OK. Has anyone experienced this? Bike is well warmed. Battery is newish and I have no problems starting it cold even after a week or two not riding. I do not think it is the battery, but something else. Anyone??

Re: Hesitating start after short stops???

This is the well known "hot start issue", It still may be under good will fix by BMW as in the past. My K13S started doing this (yes it effects the 13 series), but I put a fresh battery in and all is good. Do some searching on hot start. And, "sounded like the battery was toast" is a serious clue, even for a new battery. Do you keep it on a smart charger when not riding?

Re: Hesitating start after short stops???

I keep the bike on a smart charger from end of October until early March during the period I do not ride the bike. Otherwise I do not. This seem to be a BMW problem as Ive experienced it on three consecutive bikes

Re: Hesitating start after short stops???

Well, I think you are dealing with a battery problem. BMW's need to be on a smart charger all the time (over 4 or 5 days max). You will hear all sorts of "i dont do that stuff" but it makes a difference. I suspect your battery is toast now, or not optimum.

Re: Hesitating start after short stops???

I would double check your battery cables. Might be something loose or possibly corroded. It seems after the bike gets hot it is causing a voltage drop through one of your cables due to the high resistance from the heat.

I also remember reading somewhere about a service bulletin and/or recall that a cable to the starter was too high of a gauge and can also cause this issue.
