Battery Tender Plus w/Powerlet adapter -- doesn't work

This is very strange. I have a Battery Tender Plus (model name) which I use for all my bikes. I have several different Powerlet-to-SAE adapters which work fine for my 2004 R1100S but don't work at all for the 2005 K1200S. The Battery Tender just keeps blinking red, the same as when it is plugged into the 110V but disconnected from a bike. But when i hook up the $180 BMW charger to the K1200S, it works fine. I'm at a loss to explain it. The only 2 things I can think of is that (1) somehow the K1200S can detect and disable the Battery Tender (far-fetched) and (2) the battery is lithium and my Battery Tender Plus can't handle that -- also far-fetched. Any comments or suggestions?

Here's a pic of one of the Powerlet-SAE adapters that I use . . .

Re: Battery Tender Plus w/Powerlet adapter -- doesn't work

Your charger can not communicate with the CAN buss system of the K bike. The power outlet sockets on your bike are controlled by the bike computer. The socket circuit ( and the gps circuit) turn off 60 seconds after you turn off the key) Unless it sees a hand shake they will not turn on with the key off. (Don't charge the bike with the key on!). You need a direct wired line to the battery with a fuse in it. What is known as a pig tail. to plug that particular charger into. It is not the best selection of motorcycle charger for modern bikes. I suggest you set up wiring from your battery to an outlet or a SAE plug for your charger.
Here is one made by your charger manufacturer:
https://www.amazon.com/Battery-Tende...le+sae+pigtail
Any good motorcycle shop will have these also.
Also, certain situations can keep the socket (and low level computer monitoring) on if there is a minor draw on the circuit when the bike is turned off. Things like the DC/DC converter that changes 12 volts to 5 volts for a gps, usb socket or other low voltage transformer supplied items that you have wired in a converter for, even if the powered device is turned off will keep the circuit open and draw down your battery in a few days.

So, my first conclusion was correct.

Thank you. I have several of the Battery Tender pigtails for hooking up to m/c batteries. It's one of the first things I do when purchasing a bike, used or new, is install a pigtail on the battery for my Battery Tenders. I'm just used to being able to use the Powerlet Aux port on the BMWs.

No, to you. I was really confused. I spent an hour trying to modify the Powerlet plug thinking it wasn't making contact. I should have asked here first.

You da Man!
