Is this normal

Last year I noticed my gear indicator on my dash would flicker between 1st and 2nd as I was at a red light. I would be in 1st gear clutch pulled in waiting for green light.
I just got back from the dealer picking up an oil filter and rear end fluid to change out before I bring it in for its 6000 mile service, which will basically entail them clearing all the service codes and hopefully giving it a good once over. I talked to the service manager and he seemed stumped, said he'd check it out when I bring it in. I just dont want to open up a can of worms if this is normal. Other than that the bike is flawless. Thanks for any info

Re: Is this normal

Could be a few things - from the instrument panel starting to go - to the shifter potentiometer going. Could just be a loose connection as well.

And never rule out your battery is on the way out - these bikes do funny things when the voltage drops.

Re: Is this normal

Thanks Bruce,
Hopefully something as simple as a loose connection, cant imagine it being anything more serious the bike just turned one year old February 7th. But I can see it being the potentiometer.
So then I take it this is not normal???

My bike is same mileage and have not encountered the issue as you describe it. Please let us know what they say and good luck.

Not normal - flickering most likely loose connection or possibly battery issue - if you have a voltage meter check the battery.

I had a bad potentiometer on one of my bikes that did that - right from brand new.

Re: Is this normal

Thanks, I think I'm going to take the cover off of her tonight and wake her up from hibernation since October and do the oil change, rear end fluid and its first year brake flush, then make an appointment with dealer to have it checked out, that way if they have to order a part hopefully the bike wont be laid up much, because I feel the weather is about to break any week now hear in Illinois. I will update if and what they find.

Not common, but seems like Muddy had to replace it several times on her K1200S or K1300S.

Re: Is this normal

Sounds like the potentiometer is reading slightly erroneously. As I recall, the GS-911 can quickly reset it. The dealer can also do it with his BMW service computer. Strange that he is mystified.

Re: Is this normal

Hopefully thats all it is, and when they hook it up to there computer they will be able to see whats going on and to clear it up, he said the normal issue seems to always be that the neutral light dont come on. When I took it for a short ride today to warm up the oil I verified its still doing it.
Lee, what did muddy have to replace several times on hers?
Man It felt great to bring her out of hibernation.

The neutral light also works with the potentiometer. In fact, the poteniometer is driven by the shift drum in the tranny, and the Pot's output voltage (in any gear that is selected) is fed to the one of the onboard computers which determines what gear you are in based on the pot's voltage, and the computer drives the gear readout and neutral LED. All pretty straightforward.

Re: Is this normal

Pull off the gear pot, look inside and if there is oil the gear pot seal is shot. If very little or no oil you can easily clean the gear pot. Fill with alcohol, swish around and dump out the alcohol until clean.

Re: Is this normal

Dropped bike off yesterday, dealer called today saying its the potentiometer, but of course they dont have one in stock, so next week, will update if that took care of it. Dealer says there's no adjustment for these, basically from what I'm understanding they are either good or bad.

Re: Is this normal

But the pot can be cleaned. Dealer will probably not do it, but you can. It's better than not riding unless the part will be overnight.

Re: Is this normal

I went through this when the bike was under warranty (2010). Got a new pot. Fixed the problem of course, I suspect only because they had to reset the computer to read the new voltages for each gear. Years later (the last two years) it has been flickering in 5th and 6th gear. I used a GS911 to reset adaptation values, which requires running through the gears for ten seconds or so for each gear in sequence to calibrate after you clear current values. No more flickering. The pot unit is sealed fairly well.
There has been some discussion on the forum about doing the reset calibration on the center stand or the need to do it on the road. I did it on the center stand as the DVD says you can and all is well.
This was a side benefit from the need to reset the adaptive values because I installed reconditioned fuel injectors. The only thing the 911 unit said to do was mess with the gear selector. The rest would work itself out over some riding time.

Re: Is this normal

Picked up bike today all fixed, they did replace the potentiometer All you experts hit the nail on the head, thanks for making me seem like I knew what I was talking about when I brought it in.
Outstanding service, they didn't charge me a dime for resetting service indicator and checking it over for its 6,000 mile service either. All covered under warranty, you have to love it when things go your way once in awhile. Big shoutout to CYCLE WERKS IN BARRINGTON ILLINOIS!!
