Top 10 Westerns.. Saddle Up, Pilgrim

Was having a discussion earlier with one of my Facebook friends as to the best westerns ever made. As I took the time and brain drain to think them up and write them down, I thought I'd start a thread here in case there's one or two I may have missed. I'm pretty sure there are some film buffs here and probably a few who are old enough to have lived through those days..

Post your top 10 Westerns..

1. Shane

2. For a Few Dollars More

3. The Magnificent Seven (the original)

4. Appaloosa ( Ed Harris & Viggo Mortensen)

5. Lonesome Dove (4 part series)

6. The Searchers (John Wayne)

7. Open Range (Kevin Costner)

8. Once Upon a Time in the West (Henry Fonda)

9. Tombstone (Kurt Russell)

10. The Good, the Bad, & the Ugly

Honorable mention: The Outlaw Josey Wales (Wasn't sure if this would be considered a western...)

I’m a John Wayne fan for sure. Would have to put “ True Grit” and “ The War Wagon “ high on the list. 3’10 to Yuma “ Glenn Ford “ is a good one. El dorado, Gun fight at the OK coral, ( Burt Lancaster) Rooster Cogburn, Lonesome Dove, Broken Trail, Unforgiven, Rio Lobo. And for good measure I’ll add “ the life and times of judge Roy Bean “

I really liked "Silverado" with Kevin Kline, Kevin Costner, Scott Glenn, Danny Glover, John Cleese, Linda Hunt, ... and any of the Clint Eastwood "Spaghetti Westerns"

Oh, come on, the "wild bunch" is the top of the list. "let's go" "why not". what else is there. I do like some of them listed. Next is Unforgiven.

I still can not get the custom license plate "lets go" after 20 years trying.

Love all those movies. When the "Wild Bunch" came out I hated it. Saw a "directors" cut or something like it on the big screen. Man o man what a movie, that scene where the kids a playing with the scorpions is priceless

I don't remember the name of the movie but there was one with Sharon Stone as a contestant in a fast draw contest. There's something sexy about a good looking woman in all that leather that isn't afraid to draw down on the bad guy.

"The Quick and The Dead"

Is "Quincy Down Under" a Western?

Sort of, I guess... they all wore hats & rode horses. And maybe by extension since Kirk Douglas was in it & he was in a few westerns.

Re: Top 10 Westerns.. Saddle Up, Pilgrim

Not quite sure how we define a "Western" - does it have to be set in the 1800s? Or just set in the West using old style "values" because I'd like to throw "Bad Day at Black Rock" into the mix. Set immediately after WW2 with a stellar cast - Spencer Tracy, Robert Ryan, Ernest Borgnine, Lee Marvin - and a great screenplay. If anyone hasn't seen this film then grab the opportunity the next time it comes up.

As for the other suggestions I have no argument with any of them. Stagecoach, They tie a Yellow Ribbon, Unforgiven, The Outlaw Josey Wales are all high on my list.

Re: Top 10 Westerns.. Saddle Up, Pilgrim

Anyone remember The Gambler with Kenny Rogers?

And of course, how could any self respecting person not have Blazing Saddles on their top 10 Westerns list.

Quincy Down Under with Tom Selleck is also a favorite of mine. Similarly Joe Kidd. Something about long range sniper fire that is cool to see.

Re: Top 10 Westerns.. Saddle Up, Pilgrim

I'm with Beech on this one: The Wild Bunch is not only the best Western ever made, but IMHO it is the best movie of any type ever made!

A couple that I didn't see on the list are:

Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid, and

Waterhole Number Three. "Do you love me the way I am?" This question was asked of the sheriff's daughter by our hero (James Coburn) after a nice scromp at said waterhole. "Oh, yes!" she replied. He gets on his horse, and before riding away, he says, "Well, this is the way I am." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pPMVyGLcnWI

Guys, the correct name of the movie is Quigley Down Under, not Quincy. Excellent movie and Tom Selleck makes a great cowboy with one of the best mustaches in the business. Carry on.

My bad. I guess "Quincy Down Under definitely is not a Western. How about "Roy Down Under"?
