My new paint job

I mostly just read and do not post on here much at all but wanted to share some pics of my bike painted white. It was silver but I laid it over leaving a stupid parking spot after having to work overtime and leave work way too late for this time of year in Seattle but I wont go there.... I used Rustolem rattle cans and it actually turned out great with a great shine.

I didn't get think about the bike now looking like the bike you see the cops on around here. Rode into work the other day and the traffic parted like the red sea. Also doesn't help I have a jack and pants that has same coloring as cops too lol. Anyway just wanted to share something for once.

07 K1200GT 35K miles.

After

Re: My new paint job

That bike with a HiViz jacket has got to put the fear of god into other drivers in WA

I rode from Seattle to Portland in the pouring rain attired like that on my 16 and as you say, traffic parted like the red sea.

Nice work on the DIY repair

Re: My new paint job

JC Squared, I know what you mean about others being spooked. Lots of times I'll catch a quick profile glimpse of a black car coming from the opposite direction with a roof rack on the top .To me it quickly registers as an "uh, oh" slow down quick, the cops. This is entirely reflexive and automatically my GT slows quickly (throttle hand rotates down) as lack of a flywheel explains the u intended result. Doesn't matter whether I'm over the limit or under, it just happens! Beautiful paint job!

Re: My new paint job

Very nice job, and enjoy looking like LEO.

Uh, this the older K1200RS/GT forum, not the newer K1200/1300GT forum. That might be a better place to post.

Hey There, I have a 07 KGT with 36K miles too! Yours looks infinitely better than mine.
I did my luggage bags with shaker spray paint and it came out awful. Stickers cover them now. Beautiful job. See you in the "other" K12gt forum.

It is all about the prep in between coats. I sprayed a semi heavy coat, hit it with some 600 then cleaned it, 800(wet), 1500(wet) cleaned it then with a green scotch pad.

After scotch pad, I cleaned with isopropyl alcohol and air dry then sprayed another coat. I did that for 3 coats. I recommend buying the spray handle for cans which was like 7 bucks.

I used 6 cans of Rustoleum White Gloss spray paint($7 a piece) but I was very liberal with the paint just to give myself some buffer for sanding.

The final coat I started wet sanding with 1500, then wet sand with 3000 grit very lightly. Then rubbing compound in small sections the entire bike.

When sanding in between coats, lightly sand it and look at the paint at an angle and there will be dull dots and shiny dots (this is known as orange peel) Sand until the dots go away.

Give this a try and you would be surprised at how good it can look with patience.
