Urgent Help: Ball Joints

So, I'm removing the front fork to have it painted.

This is how the ball joints look like:

https://youtu.be/RrlaAAFNxR8

They are soft. No stop points. No damages to the boots.

My mechanic said that in a car, ball joints that are so flexible would be deemed gone.

What say you?

Just don't want to have them painted and then scratch the paint removing the ball joints...

It depends on the play, they can move easily but it is the play or the lack of, your looking for, but your there I would change them, just because.

Re: Urgent Help: Ball Joints

I couldn't feel any play whatsoever.
Meaning, the pivot screw is solidly tight to whatever base, and there's no play. It just moves about easily as you can see on the video.

I have no trouble replacing it... just that living in Nicaragua has some ... particularities.

I'd have to import the parts from Germany (about 6 weeks), also buy the sockets in Amazon and ship them here (about 3-4 weeks)... yadadada... That's what makes all my projects take so long.

Hola Eyvind

If you not feel any play then is no probem. But you must consider the movement you make is not the real running movement, perhaps is better to check like this:

"K1300 S/R - CHECK BALL JOINTS - HOW TO" http://www.i-bmw.com/showthread.php?t=54124.

Another point are the rubber seals, surely have little cracks announcing short life and less lubrication or oxidation.
You have all removed, and you know how to change the ball joints, do it

Re: Urgent Help: Ball Joints

Bernardo,

Thank you!

I guess you're right. Might as well do it.
If I've spent this much, what's a few dollars more?.

Just the time that this thing will be there... waiting for parts. I will do my best to order them tomorrow. I will also need to get a 3/4" 50/55mm deep socket, extension and adapter to use the impact wrench...

So, is there an option this side of the pond? Or only that German site?

For that price?, no... but watch with care, because are not BMW, claim to be supliers but

Ball joint of FRAP

FRAP is a highly specialized Italian manufacturer of chassis parts and OEM for many well-known vehicle manufacturers.
Parts of this brand offer accordingly a high quality and fit

US or Europe same cost, $170/$180.- each. Also look for delivery costs to your home. Perhaps is convenient for you to buy in Panamá

Re: Urgent Help: Ball Joints

Panamá?

I never checked. Wonder how to get the stuff here though.

Our governments are only interested in the following things:
1- How to make everything convoluted, complex, and bureaucratic (to justify corruption).
2- Tax from 15% up to 99% (cigars are 99%, anything rubber 55%, luxury 56%)
3- Make sure the the ruling class can laugh at the idiotic masses (we the people) struggle as they enjoy their privileges over us.

So, why make it easy in neighboring countries? Heck no.

It's cheaper to send stuff, and more convenient from the US.

So, if I get the stuff from Germany directly to Nicaragua: $300 via DHL.
But, DHL to US: EU20, then about $30 to ship here to Nicaragua...
Amazing. Must be the economy of scale or something...

Bernardo, at that cost, I'm better off buying a used fork assembly!!!
They're going for like $200...

Anyways, it'd be like $360 on the ball joints, plus shipping and taxes, and the tools .. another $100.

Hmmm... decisions, decisions...

Re: Urgent Help: Ball Joints

I asked the German website.
It'll be EU 25 to send them to the US.
So, EU 104 for the ball joints, and EU 25 to ship.
Total: EU 129, or US$147

Called my trusty BMW dealer in Chicago... They'll be $302 after shipping and taxes.

Decisions... Decisions...

Bernardo Thanks!

I will wait until my parts are painted.
I did check before disassembly and there was no play.
So, after re-assembly, I'll check again, if there's play, I'll order the parts and tools.

Re: Urgent Help: Ball Joints

Thanks for the Wunderlich heads up. Seems even cheaper that what I found on a German site.
Also a heads up on the 50 and 55mm sockets. 1/2" drive are easier to find and cheaper. I bought regular sockets, cut them in half with a die grinder and welded in a short piece of pipe. Saved plenty.

Re: Urgent Help: Ball Joints

Yeap,

I'll see what my ball joints are like when I put the bike together.
If bad, I'll replace them.

$200 is better than $300. That'll give me room to purchase tools!

Hi, I would like to ask if any of you use Frap's ball joints in your motorcycle and is satisfied? I have to swap the upper joint and wonder if it is worth buying a not OEM part and replace it.

Re: Urgent Help: Ball Joints

That's what I mean look it's from wunderlich website:

"Upper Ball Joint
For BMW motorcycles with Duolever front suspension

Like steering head bearings the ball joints eventually wear and need to be replaced. This ball joint is an alternative to the much more expensive Original BMW part but not lacking in quality. The part is made in Italy by FRAP, an OEM supplier to many European manufacturers."

I want to ask, are they as strong as the original and U have good experience with them wunderlich (frap parts)

Re: Urgent Help: Ball Joints

Well, I intend to use them on my next replacement. And, not so sure the originals are all that great. K bikes go through them fairly regularly. If you dig deeper there are also ones on some German web sites. I ran across them a few years ago but did not bookmark them. Site was in German.
They take about 5 hours to change out, two large deep sockets, 55mm and 50 mm. Also there is a bit of a problem going to the factory torque on the 7mm allen socket, I personally stop before I get to 90Nm and the possibility of stripping it.

Disassembly is not a problem for me. I wonder only if it is worth to explore in spare parts or better to add to the original ones.

This specific set that I purchased from Wunderlich are still on the shelf in my garage. Not needed yet. I have changed them in the past. There are other ones also from German web sites. They seem to be a standard item out there.

I change your tires, you buy them on the web, I do the work $40, trying to keep riders on the road.
