My R90S - now back to life

I bought my R90S in a slightly inebriated moment on Ebay. It disgraced itself by breaking down when I was riding it home but I got that fixed. Unfortunately when trailering it home from the fix, one of the tie down straps broke and it partially came off the trailer causing largely cosmetic damage. It then sat in the garage looking sorry for itself until I decided to get it rebuilt properly. Stripping it down was no problem and I was able to get the frame cleaned up, sandblasted and powder coated, the engine back in the frame, front and rear suspension fitted plus wheels. The problem was that despite having taken many photos of the strip down it was beyond me to put everything back together. I had had all the painted parts repainted by Theo Terwel : http://www.theoterwel.nl

Theo is the only person recommended by BMW to undertake a repaint of the smoked finish of the R90S.

So I phoned Theo up and asked him if he would like to put it back together. He said yes as he done this many times and here is the result:

Here's a link to a short video of it running which Theo sent me:

I'll pick it up in a couple of weeks and ride it back to Andorra, taking the scenic route. It should be fun, especially getting used to the fact that the brakes, by modern standards, are not good - you have to plan well in advance when you want to slow down!

Sweet!!! Often I think about picking up an old airhead to ride once in while, My teenage dream bike was the smoke cherry red R90S.

Correct me if I wrong Karl , but I think that the only two original colors of the R90S were the Smoke Grey in 1974-75-76 , and the Daytona Orange in 1975-76 .

Martin

That's right.

Karl, you may be thinking of the R100S.

Martin you would be right, it was the R100S that came in smoke red, the color the R90 Should have been.

Re: My R90S - now back to life

I got a little twinge looking at your post. A 1976 R90s in Daytona Orange was my first BMW, bought new from San Jose BMW. Still the prettiest bike I've ever seen. Would love to ride one again.

Mine met an unfortunate end in 1978 when a car pulled out in front of me. But not before I'd ridden it cross-country.

Re: My R90S - now back to life

Sorry to hear you had to repaint the bike, they're only original once.
I picked up this R100RS a couple of years ago, it's original paint. The PO had
the dealer restore it by replacing all the wear and tear items, painted the frame
and wheels. The seat is a Corbin.
I always liked these bikes and feel lucky I was able to get it.
