K1300R Ignition Coil replacement

Hello All,

Quick question: Can the Ignition Coils be replaced without removing the radiator?

32,000K's and one has gone...Seems normal from what I have found on the forum.

Thanks

Bernie.

Re: K1300R Ignition Coil replacement

No. Radiator is hard mounted and blocks access to the plugs/stick coils.

Re: K1300R Ignition Coil replacement

One of my coils failed, I replaced all 4 coils and spark plugs....I figured it not worth the risk of replacing only the one failed coil due to the work required in removing and reinstalling the radiator.

Iím not sure but I think itís possible to undo the top mounts and swing the radiator forward without removing it.

Re: K1300R Ignition Coil replacement

Radiator doesn't have to be removed completely, but it has to be disconnected from the waterpump.

So, it will need to be bled again via vaccum....

Re: K1300R Ignition Coil replacement

Thanks for all the responses.

Have just has all 4 spark plugs replaced, about a month ago..pity on timing..
So with one failed coil I am replacing all 4, instead of paying someone to do it I will give it a shot myself.

Thanks for specifically mentioning having to be vacuumed again... Will report back.

Ordered from the UK - works out to ~$100.00 AU (Australian) per Coil delivered....Not Bad.

Thanks Bernie.

Re: K1300R Ignition Coil replacement

Is your engine running rough at idle or only at higher rpms?

Because if you touch all 4 exhaust pipes when they are cold and start the motor you can tell which one is the bad coil....

Alternatively, the motor can also be diagnosed with the bmw software and that will tell you exactly which cylinder is misfiring

Re: K1300R Ignition Coil replacement

Bike runs a little rough on first start up, after about 30minutes of riding (like a light switch) it get really rough....running on 3.... Got home and felt headers to find one substantially cooler.
If I let the bike cool down it goes back to 4.

Diagnosed Coil as the issue is heat related, spark plugs have only recently been changed, and the bike has ~33,000Ks on it. Replacing all 4.

BT.

Re: K1300R Ignition Coil replacement

It is important to use a coil puller when removing the coils. Sounds like you did not do the previous maintenance but just saying....
Sorry for your hassle. Your approach of doing all 4 coils is a good one. Toss the one you know is bad. Save the other three to lend out as test coils or when they are no longer available.

Re: K1300R Ignition Coil replacement

Yes the timing was worrying...could just be bad timing or service shop caused premature failure. Will never know. . The shop is popular and they service allot of Jap bikes, so I would hope they have a puller...

Good idea on keeping the old ones, I will request they be careful as the remove them...

Re: K1300R Ignition Coil replacement

Update:

4 x new coils installed, bike is running very well. Smoother than I have felt for some time funny enough! - Presume issue is now resolved, have done a few hours riding with the new coils in.
Will report back after a few weeks.

Bernie.

Re: K1300R Ignition Coil replacement

Bit late to the party here for Bernie but if anyone else wants to change out coil packs I have 4 bran new OEM coil packs sitting gathering dust. I got them when I was having misfires but soon realized it was blocked fuel injector causing the problem. Anyone want to do a deal on them just PM me.

Thanks

Brian
