Thumbs down When do you change front wheel bearings???

I have 54 000 miles and have done most parts - rear drive, clutch, going for valves check and plugs, front and rear shocks BUT I now wonder if the front wheel bearings should be replaced as I have a big tour coming up-10 000 miles. Comments welcomed. Thanks

Re: When do you change front wheel bearings???

I'm thinking they are probably still ok, but you can always go ahead and replace them, then you would have peace of mind about it.

Re: When do you change front wheel bearings???

Every time you remove the front wheel you can rotate the wheel bearings by hand (or fingers). If they rotate smoothly, they're good to go until the next tire change. If the rotation feels rough, grabby, or gritty, then replace the bearings.

Re: When do you change front wheel bearings???

Front wheel bearings can last 100,000+ miles if they remain clean internally. With the wheel off the bike, use a finger on each side to pick up the wheel by the axle hole. Run it across the ground to rotate it and raise it off the ground spinning. If you feel anything but smooth rotation, the bearings need replacing.

Re: When do you change front wheel bearings???

BMW used to say at 75K miles. I have 105,000 on mine and it crosses my mind. I was even looking at used but good low miles final drives last night. If it feels tight and no crunchy or notchy business it probably is good until the next tire change. You have to trust your tire man to check for you or be sure to ask, before the tire change.
