Pirates Lair 2017 Purchasing Poll: Internet vs Magazines?

Need some opinions from our esteemed and quasi-esteemed peers... Like most motorcycle accessory shops in the US, Pirates Lair just came off of 8 years of the hardest times we've ever seen. During the last 4 years in particular, Amber and I had to resort to some creative financial gymnastics just to keep this ship afloat. That being said, we survived and are now a leaner, meaner, and more frugal fighting machine..

The good news is, with the new president at the helm, business was up a whopping 50% for Jan and 30% for February... We/ I believe that things are about to get exponentially better and quickly and the current US market reflects across the board optimism..

About a year ago, in our last ditch effort to survive Obamunism, we stopped 90% of our print-ad advertisements.. ie.. BMWON, Rider, and BMW Magazine. That saved us about $1500 a month. Oddly enough, we only saw a mild drop-off in sales which got me to thinking... Newspapers all over the country are closing their doors and serious austerity measures are taking place with major print publications including iconic motorcycle magazines like Motorcyclist (who just went bi-monthly after running for 104 years!) It's obvious that people simply aren't reading printed materials like they used to.

I'm now wondering what percentage of our customers are still making shopping and/or buying decisions based on printed reviews, articles, and printed ads.. or do they (like myself) do almost all their research and shopping via the internet? Looking forward, I'm thinking we probably need to re-evaluate where we spend our advertising dollars and I'd like some opinions...

Opinions welcome... and for Gods sake.. try to stay on point...

Re: Pirates Lair 2017 Purchasing Poll: Internet vs Magazines?

Jerry:

I voted 90% internet in reality maybe 100% because I do get several magazines and I'm sure I must have seen something in one of them occasionally.

Heck most of my information comes from social media. This site is awesome as is a few other motorcycle sites.

When I need info or ideas I start here and work through a few other sites - by the time I get to your site I already know what I want and I place my order.

Previous comment got me thinking. I voted 50/50 but only get one BMW publication per month that was included with my RT purchase . I should change my vote to 90 / 10 favoring the internet.

Re: Pirates Lair 2017 Purchasing Poll: Internet vs Magazines?

Jerry,
I voted 80/20 in favor of internet! Although I do most of my shopping through the internet many of the ideas I get is through an add I may have seen in one of the motorcycle magazines, but like Bruce once Ive researched it, and many a times on this site alone, I pretty much know what I want and know what you and others have. IMHO I still think maybe an occasional small add to get ones attention that otherwise wouldn't know your outhere.

Re: Pirates Lair 2017 Purchasing Poll: Internet vs Magazines?

Not sure what to tell you about print ads.
When I research a product I always go to the internet for reviews or forum for advice.
But, I wonder if a small ad in a magazine to let people know you're out there may be a good sales tool.
BMW riders tend to be older and more apt to look at paper publications. For BMW products you might need to place a few small ads in magazines.
For products aimed at younger riders I would not bother with paper ads.

BTW I don't know shit about this stuff

100% internet for me, if you are going to drop out of paper advertising you def need to come up on the front page (if you can affords it)def within a couple pages of search engines

Re: Pirates Lair 2017 Purchasing Poll: Internet vs Magazines?

Hey Jerry, i must admit I do most of my shopping online.
But I do quiz my mates and take advice from them, so even though I may end up on the Internet, the motivation has been from word of mouth first, which may also land you in a motorcycle shop.
Sometimes I get an idea in my head for something bike/gear related and will drop in on my local motorbike shop first and check out the range and quality in the flesh before making a decision, sometimes I get a really good price straight up from the shop and throw the cash down.
As for magazines, if there is a bike mag in front of me, im going to pick it up, unless it's cruiser/harley (just sayin, don't want a fight about it you harley Sympathizers.) And sometimes an article, review or red hot price in a magazine will spark off a fire in my wallet, which usually takes you back to their website anyway, or brings us back here asking our ibmw family for advice/experience and input on the product in question.
And to add to the Internet, most of my extra gear, (gps/panniers/bmw bags/airflow jacket/spare parts/carbon bellypan etc) has been on ebay or Gumtree (aussie classifieds) for crazy bargain prices.
So a mixed bag for me, but essentially word of mouth, Internet, motorbike shop and magazine are all contenders.
Having been in the advertising game before, a simple name and website listing in the back of the bike mag can't hurt. I used to tell my customers "if you don't put an ad in, I can guarantee you won't get 1 call/enquiry.

Re: Pirates Lair 2017 Purchasing Poll: Internet vs Magazines?

Typically I find out about "important" motorcycle accessories from I-BMW.com. Then I check on the Internet to see which brands are available, which will work with my bike, etc. I check the reviews on these items on I-BMW.com and elsewhere on the Internet. Two classic examples of the sort of accessory I'm talking about are the radiator and oil cooler guards (http://www.i-bmw.com/showthread.php?t=57629) and the Clearwater Erica lights I got for my S1000XR (http://www.i-bmw.com/showthread.php?t=58982).

I chose 100% internet but I buy a lot of things on a whim when I am at a well stocked motorcycle shop. Or maybe a show or even a bike week type event. Of course, I have a reputation for being cheap bastard. And I like face to face bargaining.

This site has great reviews on products. No dancing around, folks tell it like it is.

Also most of the "on line stores" usually have informative product video reviews.

Subscribe to three bike mags and generally don't pay much attention to the adds.

Guess it is cause I'm an old fart, but I still enjoy holding a real catalog in my hands now and then.

Re: Pirates Lair 2017 Purchasing Poll: Internet vs Magazines?

Personally I reckon that internet is your friend. Put your name in forums like this is a win win situation. That is how you came across. The main question is what sort of prices do you manage? What are your demographics? Because say if 80 % of your business is under 1000.00 bucks I will bet on google cpc (cost per click) and organics plus a decent shopping cart on your website. Forget about magazines, cost too much and your ROI will be poor.
I'am in business as well, however totally different game, and although a lot of our clients find us online, they want to come to the shop to feel, try on and if they can not find what they are looking for we will design in front of them and then handmade :-). My prices are mostly over 1000.00 bucks so here you go.......
Nice to hear that things are improving in the US, as that will reflect perhaps around the world. :-)

My 2 cents

100% internet for everything.

Haven't picked up a paper, magazine or book in years - Everything, including my grocery shopping and clothes are bought online. Even novels are bought and read online.

The only time I flick through a bike magazine is the odd few minutes while I'm waiting getting my tyres changed.

Only thing I can think of suggesting is perhaps ramp up your social media activity, and look into running a pop-up shop at or near selected events?

The only time I read the rags in the not so distant past was when I was nailed to my Lazyboy last winter... Even then, most of my reading was on the net.

I just don't find the time anymore. Haven't read a BMWON cover to cover in over three years... I always saw that chick in your ads though...

All the best in your post-Obamunism period of oppulence!!!

I voted 90% internet.

I'm not surprised that dropping the magazine ads resulted in little or no drop off in sales. They might be useful when you start out and want to build your profile but yours is an established business.

Re: Pirates Lair 2017 Purchasing Poll: Internet vs Magazines?

I voted 80/20, I see something in a magazine and research it on the web using reviews and
feedback from other users on both the product and the vendor. Service after the sale is very
important and the web is a great way to find that information.

Ad sales for BMWMOA and BMWRA magazines are a major revenue for the clubs. It's a way of
giving back to the riders that support you.

Also, magazines will stay around a very long time in the reading room and thumbing through
it your ad will be seen like a subliminal message.

Probably 90/10 with the 10 being the discovery of a new supplier. I tend to be loyal to people I've previously used...especially if they have a rewards program. But , I still shop price to keep em honest.

I sometimes will read an article or a review from a magazine on a product and add it to my wish list, you know, the one you scrawl down for Santa kind of deal. Most times however i will watch a video, a review. Sometimes i get ideas from reading a page at Cycle Gear but other than that, the majority of my information and purchases come from the internet.

I do want to but a handful of goodies from Pirates Lair though. A Carbon fibre belly pan, Throttlemeister, Sato rear sets, Synto levers ans a few other odds and ends. A Flux Capacitor as well

The ONLY cycle mags I can find in the stores any more are the "American Iron" type and "Cafe Racer", sometimes a dirt bike mag. I get the ON and OTL by mail and I do see a few ads that catch my attention, but then go directly to the internet, usually the referenced webpage to get more details, then price shop and maybe references on forums if still interested.

Hey, we're doing THIS on the web, right??

Re: Pirates Lair 2017 Purchasing Poll: Internet vs Magazines?

maybe i'm biased here since i build and optimize websites for a living, but really online is where the ad dollars should go for you. I've generally seen the accessory (or something like what i was looking for) on another bike, or just simply had an idea, then started looking online trying to figure it all out. Some of the things I've bought off you were based on searches for things that you ended up carrying.

You could get very specialized with adwords and remarketing. Social media is also getting better at persona targeting. it is hard to "tell your story" in a magazine ad vs. being able to custom tailor ads to certain group of shoppers.

P.s. i know the feeling of the last 8 years, it was like someone turned off the lights for 8 years and then they got turned back on!!!

Re: Pirates Lair 2017 Purchasing Poll: Internet vs Magazines?

Jerry, I buy from the internet when possible. Shoes, being the primary purchase in a store. Now that I have moved to NC, there are few stores around to buy what I need, though my needs are much less these days.
I have to say that when I can buy something I need, I check you out first. You support this site and you know your stuff. Never been disappointed with your merchandise or advice.
So, if you have it and I need it, I will buy from you. My accessories have not been as many lately, but your the one I turn to when I need stuff.
I also have used bemmersbonyard for other purchases. They are good too.
Jerry, you would be perfect if you voted for Hillary.😵 lol

Re: Pirates Lair 2017 Purchasing Poll: Internet vs Magazines?

I'm getting pretty old now. I don't rely on any printed matter. I head to the Internet forums to find out what is working and what is not working. I heed their advice and buy from whom they trust. If I am looking at motorcycles, again, it's the internet reviews and then to the forums to see how owners like / dislike their bike. Then I do a Google search, "Brand X problems". I never look at adds in magazines, newspapers, or flyers. Isn't that why we have Tivo, so we can fast forward through adds? You know what we need? We need a re-usable sticky that we can put over the gas pump when they throw adds at us!

Re: Pirates Lair 2017 Purchasing Poll: Internet vs Magazines?

I voted 100% Internet and like others have said it's the forums and reviews online that inform me most of the time.

OTOH, I subscribe to the digital version of Cycle World for access to old issues going back to the 60s. I also subscribe to the print version of Motorrad Magazin (http://www.motorradonline.de/).

Motorrad Magazin has the most comprehensive reporting on just about anything to do with Motorcycles and their thick Magazine is published 26 times a year. In comparison it makes the North American Motorcycle Magazines look like High School News Papers. If your German Language skills are sufficient I highly recommend Motorrad Magazin.

Re: Pirates Lair 2017 Purchasing Poll: Internet vs Magazines?

100% internet and I have to say, 100% from here on i-bmw which is also the best place to find parts that come with suggestions from members.
And you Pirate have been one of my main part supplier in the past for my k12rs.
I would rather trust someone on its reputation (here people praise you) than see an add in a magazine. Sorry for magazine owners.
