Post Deadly Uphill Left Hand Turns

Almost got whacked on the bike by a pickup truck.

Going up a moderate grade on a back county highway with little traffic, the truck came over a crest in the road just when I was making a left hand turn onto a side road.

The hill crest hid the truck as the approach to the turn was almost completed.

The truck apparently traveling above the limit, slammed on its brakes and was able to slow enough to avoid a collision.

A good reason not to make a left hand turn in any less than ideal situations.

Hard to figure out what's safe and what's not sometimes. File a near miss report and move on.

Re: Deadly Uphill Left Hand Turns

Making a left onto my street is right at the crest of a hill, I always tell people to come to a complete stop before turning. It's the only way to be sure no one is coming.
The on coming vehicles speed doesn't matter, it's completely blind.

Good advice.

Unfortunately, this left was well below the hill crest and hidden from oncoming traffic.

My favourite turn but of course we’re on the correct side of the road here in Oz 😁

Re: Deadly Uphill Left Hand Turns

One of the most dangerous if not deadly maneuver for a motorcyclist...a left turning vehicle making a U turn from the shoulder! I had deputy sheriff do this in front of me yesterday going after a speeder...but I anticipated it thanks from my many previous experiences..
