What's your chronological age?

I'm very curious about the (chronological) age of fellow GT riders. So, here's a poll that's designed to get to the bottom of this age thing(hopefully it hasn't already been done before). Although I'm mainly interested in the average age of GT riders, I'm particularly interested in the tails of the distribution...young and old. Why? I'm wondering (not only if I've lost time by starting too late, but also) about how long I can keep riding...So, after responding to the poll, feel free to add your valuable comments.

You can keep riding as long as you can throw your leg over the saddle.

Re: What's your chronological age?

No way you can exclude KS riders from your survey! We can catch you on your GT!! NO escape!!

Besides.. you have not revealed YOUR age. Why ask a question you have yet to disclose about yourself?

So.. fess up.... 40's, 50's, 60's, 70's, .. beyond...???

oops.. dang.. I see you were smart enough to add "chronological"... there goes that answer of 16 years old!

Re: What's your chronological age?

Don't think you have anything to worry about, RW. And, it's funny you should ask; on Wednesday I'm 69!! And a GT rider - well K-S, too.

How much longer for me? Well, Ardys Kellerman is 86 and still piles on the miles riding her RT.

That K-S, by the way, has a few parts pretty well scraped-up!

Fun pole, though. There is at least one other GT rider on the forum who is older than me - maybe he will check in.

Re: What's your chronological age?

I will be having my 71st Birthday in about 2 weeks. I am celebrating it by taking my entire family to Vail for a week of skking. I still do the black trails and powder! Today in 32 degree weather, I took the bike out for a 25 mile spin to get the cobwebs out of the bike and my head.

I usually do several long wekends on some medium long distance rides of a few 200 to 300 mile days. Today rode my bike with ny new/old Bill Mayer seat that I swapped with one of the members on this forum. Wonderful !!!!!!!!!

I hope to be riding well into my eighties or later...................

Larry, that was quick!! You were the guy I was referring to that's a bit older than me!

Speaking of skiing, wife Betsy and me have chalked up 34 days this season at Whistler (nice getting those senior ski prices on our passes!!). We ususally average 50 days per season.

Tell you a little story: the downhill at Whistler Mtn. is adjacent to one of our favorite runs. On the run out I was just behind one of the kids coming off the race course. After pulling along side, we stopped at the lip of a black diamond run called Bear Paw. I pulled up my goggles and to the amazement of the kid (who apparently thought he was going fast) exclaims; "Hey you're old"!

Ah well, can't win 'em all - have fun skiing the pow at Vail - next best place to Whistler! <g>

Hijack - Miles, I passed up a party at Lonestar BMW yesterday to play on more urban roads. Robert (co -owner) was presenting Ardys with an award for 800,000 lifetime miles!! She rocks!!! I was there when we cut the cake for her last award - hardy gal on a bike... getting a bit difficult for her off the bike though.

Work on your fitness and you'll ride for a long time. Sit on the couch with a beer and soon that's all you'll be able to do.
I've got lots of riding buddies who, like me, are in their 60's (and one in his 70's who visits the gym 3 times a week). All are fit.

Re: What's your chronological age?

I'll ride as long as I can but that may not mean I'll still be qualified to do so.
Hopefully, unlike many still on the road, I'll know enough to stop riding/driving when I no longer have the coordination to do either.

Not to worry. Seeing that GT and KS riders are generally like-minded souls (in fact, in many cases, the same soul), KS riders are welcome to vote!

Bit of a snip, Pat. Thanks for the picture of Ardys. Read about her on different forums, but haven't seen a picture.

Hope she can keep riding for as long as she wishes!

Great pic of Ardys. Some of the LD guys had shirts printed that read "You wish you rode like a Texas grandmother"

If anyone's interested, there's a radio interview with Ardys at this link. Look under December 19, 2007.

YES!
Besides sharing her cake with her on that occassion, I was at Lonestar the morning when Ardys rolled in having just completed a 48+ the night before. She was trading one of her bikes for the other that Lonestar keeps ready for her and heading back on the road to go to her niece's birthday party in New Hampshire!

This old gal could put all of us to shame in terms of mileage on her bikes.

Re: What's your chronological age?

I must say that the title of this thread is a little puzzling. Is there any other kind of age besides "chronological" age? Maybe this was originally posted by the "Department of Redundancy Department"?

As opposed to "mental age", Bob?

For instance how you're going to age if that new GT isn't in your garage by the first week in April!! <big grin>

Well, Miles, if that new GT doesn't get here by the first of April, I'll age rapidly just pacing back and forth worring about it! It's already being delayed 2-3 weeks! I thought Germans were punctual!!

Re: What's your chronological age?

Bob,

Getting a little more serious, BC Don also ordered a GT equipped the same way as your bike with the pkg. that does not contain the cruise control. (His location says Calgary, but I remember the bike being delivered to Eastern Canada). Point being that it was about 4 weeks later than his dealer promised.

It does seem that there is a lag past the dates given to the dealers of about 4 weeks, but the good news is that they do deliver. Just a bit later than the original promised date.

Here's a post from back in July that goes into his experience with the delay. He had to make a choice of taking a color that was inventory or ordering the bike with the equipment and color he preferred. He decided to go with ordering the bike.

Re: Please BMW - NO Keyless Ignition!!

Miles, thanks for the question and now to further hijack this thread .

I've been posting mostly on that "other" site so folks here who don't go there won't have the update.

The bike finally arrived and better news yet, Finally got built and better news yet, the dumb-ass dealer FINALLY figured out what was owed on the trade in bike so I could pick up "new blue".

Picked up the bike on Wednesday afternoon. Between then and yesterday afternoon put on 220Km, (about 130 miles), so not much at all. Initial impressions are 1) I'm gonna love this bike and 2) I need to get my radar detector installed ASAP!

I'm still just playing around with setup (seat height and bar height). I just moved the seat down and the bars to "mid" position at the end of yesterday so I'll try that out for a few hundred K to see what it is like.

I just ordered the shark skin tank grips - I really noticed that on a trailing throttle I need something for my knees to grip into. The seat isn't forcing me foward into the tank like on my VFR BUT, the deceleration is causing a body weight shift and my knees are either sliding or I have to put more pressure on than I want.

I'll likely order a Cal-Sci shield over the weekend so I can get more quiet behind the stock shield. It actually isn't that bad but in a downpour I'll want more protection.

I'm still babying it, haven't had it over 7,000 RPM and not over 160KPH (ummmm just under 100). Once I get to about 500 Km (310Miles), I'll bump the RPM up another 1,000RPM to 8,000RPM so that by the time it goes in for it's initial service at 1,000Km give or take I've had it bump off the rev limiter.

Thanks for that Miles. Normally a 3 to 4 week delay would not bother me too much, but in this case there are some "logistics" to worry about. As I probably mentioned earlier, two friends and I go at the start of May each year on what has become known (to us, anyway) as the "Three Amigos Ride Again". As the delivery date of the GT approached the start of May, there will be less time to get in the first 1000km in time to have the first service done before we leave. May have to have it done enroute, I suppose.

Re: What's your chronological age?

Does riding our bikes move our chronological age forward or backwards? On bones and back, I think mine moves forward, but on ride thrills I think it makes me feel younger.

Re: What's your chronological age?

Good poll (even though I say so myself)! If you look at the data, almost 85% of the GT riders are aged 60 or less. What happens when you reach 61? Why the precipitous decline in riding GTs?

RW,

You reach 60 and you're finsihed! <G> Just get the Buick and "drive" very slow! <g>

My guess, to try and be serious, is that, for the purpose of a poll like this, you (and the rest of us) are in the wrong pew!

The demographic is younger on this website than some of the others - think, for instance, the RT board.

Take a look at that thead linked here - and wait, wait, wait - it loads very "slowly"! <g>

You will see where many of the senior riders are "located"!

Not sure if this means more older riders opt for the RT. Probably not - this just happens to be the RT board. Bet there are a number of older riders out there, not associated with i-bmw.com that happily ride the GT.

Miles

If they're out there, we should try to get more of them to be more active in this site. I'm sure their perspective on our collective passion will be valuable.

Re: What's your chronological age?

If you're looking for some interesting perspectives, try the K12GT forum over at BMWLT.com. There are a lot of us who were simply out-riding our LTs and have switched over to the much sportier GT.

And there's the K12GT forum over at K-Bikes.com. Those guys are generally coming from the sportier side, and are amazed at the plushness and comfort of the GT compared to what most of them were riding.

And for a more international feel, try the K12GT forum over at BMWK1200S.com. They often get news of new bikes, service bulletins, software upgrades, etc. well before we do over on this side of the pond.

Re: What's your chronological age?

I am 71 and the little head is still thinking very sharply. It never gets Alzheimer's like the big head. I am riding more often on my GT than I have done in many years. In fact, I have put more mileage on this bike, more than double of what I did on the KRS per year.!!
