Bmw crankcases.

Hi. Anyone out there know if you can replace just one side of an 850r crankcase. Or do you have to replace both sides.
The motor has only done 6000. Miles. And has a cracked sump area just behind the oil filter. So is worth a rebuild.
There are a few for sale on EBay. Half cases. So that suggests that a half case is OK. Any advice welcome.
Thanks . Richard.

Re: Bmw crankcases.

Why not look at the Max BMW onlne parts fiche? If each half of the crankcase carries a different part number, then you should be able to replace only one half. If one part number covers both halves, then you're probably out of luck.

Re: Bmw crankcases.

Hi again . Just checked the bmw parts fiche and there is only one part no for a pair of crank cases.
So how come some people are selling half cases?
Decided to get mine welded up. It's only the sump area. And it only holds oil. A bit of fine fettling and all should be OK. Many thanks.

Sadly they are likely just selling the chunk they have that is undamaged. I would have been surprised to learn that they are not machined to match as pairs.

Possible answers may be:

1) They just want to make some money
2) They don't realize what they're offering needs to be a complete case as opposed to half a case.

Do you ever wonder how much information on the 'net is just plain wrong?

Probably they don't kbow they should be a pair.
I have just stripped mine. And found an alloy welder who does these all the time . Locally. So result. A bit of banging with a block of wood and a hammer . Welded up all should be OK
Many thanks for the replyies guys. .
