Re: NEW POLL:How'd You Get Your GT

It was the first GT that wasn't tied up on a waiting list at my local dealer. All of the previous GT's didn't make it to the showroom floor being delivered directly to new owners. Saw it sitting there kind of looking for a home and I went for it.

I love my "S", so it stayed put.

Since this is in the NEW GENERATION GT forum, choose number 1....traded another BMW for it!

Damn BMW reusing a model name without any real "down time"!

I still have my LT with 97K on it. I plan on getting it to 100K, but the longer I ride the GT, the less likely that is to happen.

Beautiful Black 2003 K1200RS with 50K (and a Street Pilot 3, Sargent Seat, buncha other goodies) sold to a happy fella for $9800. New Graphite K1200GT from Milwaukee BMW (Loaded!) 3 weeks and 2100 miles ago.

When the K12RS left I actually got choked up. I'm WAAAAAAY over it now, though.....

Re: NEW POLL:How'd You Get Your GT

Traded my 03 K12GT on the first new generation GT I had ever seen in the flesh. There were 3 on the showroom floor on March 3rd - every other time I had been to the dealer, there were no new generation GTs as they were sold before they hit the showroom floor.

Actually, I took the 03 in for service and rode home on the 07!

I sold my 2002 LT and my FLSTF then purchased a new 2006 GT and kept a Road King in the stable. Know I ride both a Hi tech and a Lo-Lo-Lo tech bike. I ride out of Rochester Hills, MI. in the summer and Ocala, FL during the winter months.

Still got my 2003 K1200GT - it's different and special and still nice to ride - don't really want to sell it but I know I need to as I don't ride it enough and to have that amount of cash sitting in the garage doesn't make sense...

I test drove one at the spring 06 test ride days in Calgary Alberta and couldn't think about anything else all through the next ski season so I ordered on mid winter and took delivery spring 07. I sold an old Yamaha to generate a little cash and thought the Beemer would make a good stable mate for my Vespa PX 150. So far it's all good

Welcome Michael. BTW, where is Lake Panorama...I used to live in Omaha in the '70's when I worked for IBM (90th St/Dodge at the time). I never heard of Lake Panorama or is it a manufactured lake of some sort. I used to live at the outer edges of the city (Millard) which was 168th St. Probably in the heart of Omaha now. Good luck with the cycle and enjoy riding the 'best'.

Re: NEW POLL:How'd You Get Your GT

Thanks jpalamaro and this is a very informative site.

Lake Panorama is a private lake about 50 miles west of Des Moines. It is a dammed river (Middle Raccoon river) 1400 acres 7 miles long and is one of the largest private lakes in the USA. Website is lakepanorama.org. Houses here are about 2mil on down. Vacant lakefront lots (no house) are about 250-300k. It was developed around 1968.

I like going to Omaha. I will have my bike maintenance done there like I do my bimmers. My wife is from Iowa which is how I got here. I grew up and lived in SoCal. (Newport Beach) until 89 then Seattle until 96. I really like it here in Iowa away from the traffic etc. But I had to live on water. So, thats it in a nutshell.

Re: NEW POLL:How'd You Get Your GT

Traded my k1200rs for the GT in October. I could be on the roads here in Northern California every day but the bike sits covered up in the garage. It runs so poorly that I don't even want to ride it. And yes, I do have the new air box. The dealer is working with BMWNA trying to sort it out but it's a slow and frustrating process. That BMW put this thing on the market with the its many problems is unfortunate. However, their slow response to correcting same is incomprehensible in light of the fact that a number of those problems are safety related.....uncommanded acceleration in particular. This isn't my first BMW but it will be my last. I envy you guys with sweet running bikes. Thanks for letting me vent.

However, their slow response to correcting same is incomprehensible in light of the fact that a number of those problems are safety related.....uncommanded acceleration in particular. This isn't my first BMW but it will be my last. I envy you guys with sweet running bikes. Thanks for letting me vent.

What a bummer Don. It's also unbelievable that nothing has been done. It would seem the combo of software, airbox, and ECU would have eliminated the problem(s). Have you asked for a MECHANICAL REPLACE? Specifically, you want a new bike?

Re: NEW POLL:How'd You Get Your GT

I plan on buying one in the near future. I have never ridden a bike that put a big smile on my face like the K1200GT did. Already picked out color and options. Just need to move some finances around and she's all mine!

I bought my '04 K1200GT in March of '07. I've started to ride again after almost 40 years away from riding. What was I thinking?

Re: NEW POLL:How'd You Get Your GT

Frank,

You "really" traded an R1 for the GT?! If you're nut 'funnin' us, guess that really says something for the GT!

Seriously, would love to know your thinking that went into this move. Decided on longer travel, two-up considerations, weather related or, generall, how did you come up with this decision!

Never has this GT rider seen anyone with a flat-out sportbike decide on a sport-tourer of anykind as a swap!

There has been at least one GT on this forum that was taken to the track, though!

Re: NEW POLL:How'd You Get Your GT

I agonized over it for 2 years, then finally my wife browbeat me into buying it as a retirement gift for myself. I figured the wait was good because all the major bugs (except the antenna ring, I found out later) were taken care by the time I took the plunge. Now it just sits there waiting for me to recover from my prosatate removal .

Re: NEW POLL:How'd You Get Your GT

I will be 62 in October and I am planing to retire the end of December. I got the 07 GT bacause the oldK1100LT had over 100k and I wanted a fresher bike to start a 9 mo. around the country trip starting next March. Ikept the old LT because I could not stand to get rid of it for whwt I could get for a bike with 100k.

Re: NEW POLL:How'd You Get Your GT

D.K., congratulations on your new GT! 9 month around the country trip! Wow; make sure you take a camera and send in ride reports as this unfolds.

And FWIW, you've got at least 7 more years of riding your GT; based on my age of 69! (got to get this one to 100,000 miles - but you will be well on your way after your trip next spring!)

Re: NEW POLL:How'd You Get Your GT

I started riding 4 years ago on my Honda. Went on a 3 week trip to the alps and dolemites with my uncle who has been riding motorcycles for 40 yrs. and bmw's for 10 and absolutely fell in love with the comfort and ride of the r1150r's we rented out of munich. I got a promotion and paid off the honda and went to the local bmw shop who my uncle is friendly with I was going to trade in the Honda and get an R1200RT but theowner had 1 brand new 08 K1200GT left in stock and told me to take on a test ride. It had no miles on it when I took it out, I could'nt believe the power of the slant 4 and the ease of handling. I was used to the riding position as my uncle has an r1150rt. I was sold and purchased it the same day for 18,900, over 3,000 off the sticker. I could'nt be happier with the gt and love still have the honda for around town.

Re: NEW POLL:How'd You Get Your GT

Yesterday on the last leg of a Harley 1800 mile ride through Northern Idaho, and Canada BC, stopped by a dealer to check out the Suzuki B-King I had been reading about and had some interest.

Happened to notice the new K1300GT and before the day was over I had traded in my CVO Harley Ultra Classic and bought it. To me it's the best of the other sport tourers I had owned (Honda ST1100, Honda ST1300, BMW R1100RT) but with a 50% power boost.

By the time the day was over I also bought a Suzuki Gladius 650 for my daughter and loaner to my son in laws, and then at the last minute also got the B-King on a sweet deal (which was the reason for the visit in the first place) So three new bikes in one day, all without a plan. That's probably a once in a life time buying experience for me.

Looking forward to many miles of GT touring.

Re: NEW POLL:How'd You Get Your GT

I rode around on an '05 Goldwing for four years and all my friends, and spouse kept politely quiet. I felt deep down that the bike was making me older than my years, but I always had my '98 R1100RT to snap me out of it. An embarassing trip to the Georgia mountains finally brought me to the realization that riding should be enjoyable, not a job.
I ditched the Goldwing,got a KGT and I feel 100% better!

Traded the 07KS in on the 09GT in late spring. I can ride for hours and hours now without neck pain. About ready for my 6000 mi service. Absolutely zero problems, switches or otherwise.

Re: NEW POLL:How'd You Get Your GT

I had a Yamaha V Star 1100 and had problems ridding for more than a hour, finally went to Dr. and found I have busted my coccyx and it had not healed right. So I started looking for something with a bit of a forward lean sitting position and guess what, it was a 06 GT that not only spoke to me but just plain ole YELLED at me

Re: NEW POLL:How'd You Get Your GT

Was out on my 04' R1150RS for a early spring ride and stopped at the dealer, sales guy knew I was looking at K-Bikes and had an 05' K1200S he'd just taken in. He took me on a test ride as he'd been stuck inside all day. Needless to say I was sold on upgrading from an oil head! I put my bike on Craig's List and a bunch of other places and no bites. I was disappointed in the storage on the KS, so started looking online for a GT and found one in New Hampshire 7.5 hours away. Really fast Graphite, Nav III, Small Topcase, ESA, cruise, BC, Cee Bailey's screen and only 3,400 miles. Called him up and mad ena offer and told him i could pick it up that weekend. Wife expecting twins and was having false labor and it was a bad week for him. I told him I could send a deposit so he could hold it as I was headed out to Whistler, BC for a ski trip, he told me he would hold the bike. Posted my R1150RS on Craig's List in NH before i left an sold it while I was gone. Returned on the red eye from Vancouver on 3/28/10, left for NH on the RS at around 4 PM on 4/1/2010. Delivered the 04' R1150RS on 4/2/2010 (Yep, Good Friday). The buyer of my bike gave me a ride 45 minutes away to meet the seller of the GT. Everything was as described, went to the bank and obtained a lien release, he signed it over to me and took me to NH DMV for temporary tags. Got the tags on the bike and bike loaded up around 3-3:30 and headed off for the 7.5 hour ride home. Made it home at 11:15 PM Good Friday, the Easter Bunny was very good to me with both deals in the same day, a lot of riding and no problems, no issues at the bank or the DMV and no holiday traffic problems, just a worried family, friends and neighbors who all thought I was crazy ! I am crazy, crazy about my GT. Center stand is my only gripe.

Oh, the seller of the GT even shipped the original factory screen to me which I switched out already. I'll save the Cee Bailey's for another time. I've been riding the bike ever since I got back, did a short 300 mile ride Saturday. Just need to get my radar detector on there ASAP.

Re: NEW POLL:How'd You Get Your GT

I bought my '06 GT off of Loggiebone (thanks again, Doug!). She is my first bike. At 40 I decided to get into riding. Based on friends I have had for years who were avid riders, I knew BMW was the way to go for me. It was between a GT and an RT. I settled on getting the GT and my only disappointment has been that I waited so long to take up riding.

Cheers,

Very first motorcycle a GT? Wow, that's ballsy. Keep your right wrist below the knuckles!

Re: NEW POLL:How'd You Get Your GT

I figured why screw around with intermediate bikes when I would simply get what I actually wanted 6 months later. I did a bit of riding on a Royal Star Touring after the BRC. Going from a 900 lb cruiser to a 620 lb BMW was quite easy. Everyone speaks in terms of "power - cc's - engine size" as being the concern for new riders. I would offer that, for me anyway, the size/weight of the bike was a more significant issue. The GT is much easier to ride.

Cheers,
