Two up - Sydney to Adelaide - May 2017

Another fast approaching trip...

So I need to get to Adelaide for the start of the 2017 Shitbox Rally on the 27th of May. Most normal people would consider flying, I mean it's only a couple of hours on a plane and prob cost a couple of hundred bucks... what do I do??? I plan a six day ride or 2,194 Kms and ~28 Hours across 3 states which in case you are wondering is not exactly the most direct route.

So here are my stops and if you live in Australia you may guess the roads I am taking (weather permitting)

20/5 Day 1 Sydney to Jindabyne
21/5 Day 2 Jindi to Wangaratta
22/5 Day 3 Wangaratta to Lorne (need to check the route as I have no idea what is a good road to take)
23/5 Day 4 Lorne to Port Fairy
24/5 Day 5 Port Fairy to Robe
25/5 Day 6 Robe to Adelaide

Bike then gets stored at a mate's place and then ride back to Sydney a few weeks later via a different route... prob coast but keen to check the Murray Hwy as well so who knows.

Yes, there are some short days but I am taking a pillion and she gets cranky if we don't stop to do stuff like eating, drink coffee, take photos, etc.

If you are around and/or live in some of these towns look out for a Black K1300S and you are more than welcome to join us for part of the ride.

iBMW members are not normal nor are they 'most people'. That's why they ride BMWs. Sounds like you're fitting right in. Enjoy the ride

2194 divided by 6 = 365km a day = piece of cake ...

And get her a plane ticket to meet you there ...

Hey Zorro,

I'd like to catch up with you and the Pillion Passionista on the Sunday, on the way to Wangaratta.

I'll PM you as it gets closer

Sounds good mate. It'll be great to catch-up and if you don't mind get some tips from you for good roads heading south the next day.

Absolutely. If you're coming over from Jindabyne via Thredbo, I could meet you at Walwa.

I wonder what the road conditions over Thredbo will be like in a 4 weeks time. If no good, you would have to get down to Khancoban via Cabramurra, which is still an awesome ride.

Hi Fred
Gonna be a long boring freeway (Hume) ride from Wang to Lorne then a short day to Port Fairy.....even with a few photo op stops
Also it could be very cold through thredbo by then so youll need some good riding gear
To make the most from Wang you'll need to leave early, go to Whitfield, tolmie, Mansfield, Jamieson, Eildon
Alexandra then stay at Seymour.
Avoid Melb. Via Broadfrod, Kilmore, Gisborne, Bacchus March, Geelong, Torquay,
GOR and stay at Port Campbell
May need an extra day
My K looks like a cop bike so we can do a high speed escort for you

Thanks mate. I'll make a few changes to the itinerary but that's easy enough, we have heated vests and the right gear as long as is not pouring down with rain, snow or both :-).

That said, I was enquiring about transporting the bike to Cairns on another post (so I could ride down after the rally) and Kiwimat suggested an alternative which I like a hell of a lot. Ride to Cairns, Flight to Adelaide, Drive the shitbox to Cairns and the ride back to Sydney. I am exploring this as an option as well. The Passionista will only do the one trip so I get to do my own thing on the way back + I get to ride twice as much... The downside is that I won't have my own escort but there will be other times. Will keep you posted.

Thats the gotcha mate. I can do cold but snow, rain or so cold that there is a risk of black ice kinda makes it tricky...

Looking at your dates mate you might be ok but you never know up there, some years they get heaps of snow early and other years they get bugger all. Like you said its easy enough to change your route.

It's not the snow at Jindabyne or Wangaratta that could be the problem, but going over Thredbo. The time you're going is only 2 weeks before the official ski season opening. But never fear, there are other ways around.

Do you have Great White Snow Sharks? How about skiing Kangaroos? J/K. We Yanks have a limited perspective of you guys.

When I was in Viet Nam in Vung Tau, The Australia Military had a flight element located there that had a small club. My first introduction to Fosters. I thought I was holding my own until I got up and tried to walk out. Great bunch of guys.

Hi Mate, maybe you had some of those beers with my uncle Mick (R.I.P). He was there with the Royal Australian Infantry Corps and the 161 (Indep) Recce Flt.

For the record we don't drink Fosters anymore... Fosters it's awful!!!

After drinking warm Carling Black Label from rusty cans at Chu Lai, the cold Fosters at Vung Tau was like nectar from heaven. The guys in the Australian compound had dug a big hole and lined it with rubber from a large bladder. It was the only swimming pool I saw. They were a fun group.

That looks pretty cool ( ) - I am not sure 🤔 I would be too keen to do it on a loaded K13S with the missus on the back hanging on for dear life

Me neither.
They were camping and got out before the snow got worse!
Not much choice. Apparently the cops got a surprise to see them at Khancoban.

And Thank you. I'll probably have some input on the report but it's very likely that most of the writing will be done by my other half on her blog which I will share with you all. I already provided the link on one of my past posts but can't find it right now and I think that she took the site down for some updates prior to the trip.

Re: Two up - Sydney to Adelaide - May 2017

I've had my K1300S for a couple of years now and have not added anything since I bought it but preparing for this trip I've made some changes:

Installed a couple of RAM mount points which I particularly like as they are not intrusive.
Added a RAM mount Grip for my phone/gps
Added a new windscreen which apparently helps with better wind deflection
And hopefully tomorrow I'll get some CIL-LED-H7 4000 Lumen H7 LED Headlight Bulbs from Cyclops to brighten things up a bit

Sorry I didn't take step by step instructions but this stuff is pretty straight forward... and yes she needs a wash

Re: Two up - Sydney to Adelaide - May 2017

G'day Freddy and Robyn,

Sorry I couldn't meet up with you guys yesterday. I would have loved to, but something else came up that I had to attend.

Anyway, I had a look at that tracking page you sent me. Looks like you have found the good way out of Wangaratta. That ride via Whitfield to Mansfield and then to Jamieson and Eildon is awesome.

I've taken the liberty of adding the following link http://shitbox.westoznet.com/support5.php for anyone who wants to track your route. And for anyone wanting to know about the Shitbox rally, look here https://www.shitboxrally.com.au/

Enjoy the rest of your ride, and don't forget to try and come on next years rally. Kiwimat has a new thread going with all the information you need regarding accommodation etc. 5 days of riding the Snowy Mountains is great. See here http://www.i-bmw.com/showthread.php?t=60631

I'm also seeing if anyone is interested in a possible Tassie ride after the rally. Check out my thread here. http://www.i-bmw.com/showthread.php?t=60676

Thanks mate, there will be plenty of rides in the future. Keen to do the Aussie rally and def Tassie if I can get the time off work.

My better half has been taking notes and will likely update her blog with details of this trip but it has been pretty good so far. Today's ride was magic (thanks Randall - Aussie K13 for the suggestions), the only bit that was a bit tricky was the Jamison to Eildon run, the road was covered in moss and when it wasn't moss there was a fair amount of gravel to deal with. The bit between Withfield and Tolmie was absolutely stunning!!!

The tracking page was created by one of my mates doing the shitbox rally but I got access to it a bit earlier and will likely keep it going until I get back to Sydney. Happy for it to be shared.

Currently the plan is to fly back to Adelaide from Cairns on the 4th of June and ride back to Sydney, route to be decided but I will prob only have 5-6 days. Recommendations, suggestions are always welcome

Cheers,

Freddy
