Post 2018 Aust Rally Tasmanian trip - Expression of Interest

Edit:Kiwimat - Copied from post #18.... i have added the change of plan and updated proposal, feel free to read through original idea too.

General idea would be to leave Tumut, which is the final stop on the rally, and either do a run straight to Melbourne for the ferry, or have an overnighter on the way to Melbourne and then spend about 5 days on island.

Please discuss

G'Day All,

The Australian I-BMW rally organized by the incomparable, Kiwimat is set for it's fourth year in 2018.

I had a crazy idea, that doing a prequel to the rally, by riding around Tasmania for a few days prior could be fun. So I'm just seeing who might be interested in the same thing. I'm not really looking to be an organizer like Kiwimat. If we did the ride, then it would be every person for themselves, but doing it at the same time, if that makes sense.

Obviously, we could achieve economy of scale by sharing cabins on the Spirit of Tasmania, and sharing rooms in Tassie. But that sort of talk is a long way off.

Possible dates that I'm putting out there are:

Leave Melbourne on the boat on the evening of the 22nd of February, arriving in Tassie on the morning of the 23rd.
Riding around the Apple Isle on the 23rd, 24th, 25th, 26th and getting back on the boat on the evening of the 27th.
Arrive in Melbourne on the morning of the 28th and then have an overnight stop somewhere on the way to Tumut.

I've done Tassie twice before. The last time we did it with seven bikes, and the only bits that were organized were the Spirit of Tasmania bookings. We all travelled around the island in a group and organized accommodation by mutual consultation each afternoon. It all worked really well.

Anyway, let's kick some tyres and see if things hot up and we get a bit of serious interest.

Cheers
JB

Have you got a rough idea of where your days will start/stop town wise? Youve got to have a bit of a plan A to start the Internet nonsense

Don't worry about the details Wardy, Tassie is small enough to improvise plus you are putting too much pressure on the Doc

Thats the right idea....get off the boat, check the weather then decide east coast or west
Anti clockwise is the correct way to go tho.

Great idea but it would mean missing WSBK
What about going early Dec. ? Then there is time to recover
Obviously doesnt join up to the rally, if that is the intention then my idea is out.

Like others have said mate. No plans other than the boat booking. The rest you just wing it. In saying that, Randall's been there about 13 times, Jenny something similar, I've been twice. Smoggy not sure.

There's plenty of knowledge to be able to wing it.

But if you want to start studying maps, the last trip I did we went clockwise and stayed in Deloraine on day 1, Swansea Day 2, Hobart day 3 and 4, Derwent Bridge day 5 and Strahan day 6

Yes, been there a few times...a place of no stress, except for the ferry, that must be organised well in advance

22nd, pretty sure I will be parking my bike on top of packo's houchie, at the Island.

Chances are, over the next few evenings, there will will be a serious toasted sandwich cook off.

Re: Prequel to the 2018 Australian I-BMW Rally - Expression of Interest

Plenty of the normal stopping points named have caravan parks with onsite vans.
Easily take 4 people per cabin, that makes accom costs a little easier.
I have found that all of the accom places (pubs & motels & caravan parks) are very bike friendly.

February is a good time down here. (as is December, although the rent-a-car tourists & nomads make things a touch more "interesting" then)
I, in-fact have some mates threatening to come down here about that time for the lap and some sight-seeing. Although, they have been saying this for a while & naming a month is the closest they have ever gotten.

I can help some if needed. Just let me know.

If the guys are here then, I would be riding with them and will hopefully see you all along the way. If they waffle-on as usual and don't commit and do not come down, I would love to lap the state with whomever wishes to visit.

That pretty much applies to any time. If any of you lot of miscreants decide to visit the isle, let me know and we can ride some/all or I can just support (info, shipping gear & bikes, oh-shit help, whatever) as desired (and as my shift-schedule allows)...

Dave.

Re: Post 2018 Aust Rally Tasmanian trip - Expression of Interest

Hi All,

Unfortunately my personal circumstances have changed in recent weeks. Whilst I will attend the Australian Rally 2018, I will not be able to do a post ride to Tasmania.

I have committed to attending the Isle of Man TT next year, so an extra week going to Tasmania is off the cards.

I'm still happy to help anyone with advice.

Sounds interesting. If I come down for this ride next year might schedule this as part of the trip and head home after the ralley.
See how I go next year.
