New guy, old bike

Hey. Checked an important item off my bucket list this summer and bought a K bike. I've been jonesing for a K since 1986, and on the BMW wagon for 20 years.

I bought Dennis' 2009 K1300S. Don't know his screen name here or on SportTouring, but I got the impression he's participated in K forums for a while, owning his & hers K1200RS, K1300Ss (that's plural), and who knows what else. He and his wife are great people, made the purchase process fun.

Dennis set up the bike with Wilbers, MRA screen, older K1200 seat, and better lighting - each choice excellent. Dennis is a tall dude, but I found the bike to be a comfortable fit despite replacing his length for my girth. So far I've done a couple thousand miles and 8-12 hour riding days and won't be changing ergonomics anytime soon because of a predisposition towards self abuse and hatred of turbulence.

Installed a throttle lock and steering pivot phone mount. Where do people put an extra Powerlet socket on these bikes?

The mighty K stalls on occasion. Doesn't put my panties in a wad, but the bike's fairly smooth at idle and I've been surprised by flatlined tach at stoplights when not paying attention.

Love the motor. My wandering eye put me in the driver seat of K1200R during a dealer demo day back around 2006, and that 1200 motor was impressive... the 1300 a bit more so. Bike has shift assist, good application for this drivetrain.

Only changes in the works are road trip gear (case + fuel) and an AF-XIED. The bike's mission is interstate and backroad runs in western US states, but it also does a suprisingly decent job as mountain road thrasher - with strict throttle control.

So far, I can't claim that richer fueling is mission critical for the K1300, but I'm curious to try, and currently run the AF-XIED on my boxer and F bike (both notoriously lean from factory). Maybe you longtime K owners can comment. And yes - I'm a fan of forum search tools, and will sniff around here a lot.

No pics - abandoned my photobucket account. Bike is just another metallic gray K1300S.

Re: New guy, old bike

Hi Mark and congrats on your new K1300S!

I've had my 2011 K1300S for 13 months and 11K miles and so far no stalling issues. You may want to examine the Air Filters as they seem to get filthy fairly quickly. My engine/drivetrain is bone stock except for a set of Riser Plates (helps for curvy "road thrashing").

I might get a Barracuda "Urban Brawler" Slip-On Muffler for it sometime in the future. A set of Wilbers will be considered in the future as well.

I wish you a good rest of the riding season!

Thanks for warm wlecome.

Yep, I figured the stall could be cured by a bit more fuel. Same stall problem plagued early F800 bikes, so much so that the factory remapped the BMSK to solve problem.

Will be interested in the AF-XIED effect on the K. The bike doesn't need more power, but seems a little edgy at low RPM in traffic before blissfully launching into ICBM mode on open roads.

FWIW - BMW seems to have figured out the Euro emissions tuning battle: lean tuning impact on the earlier bikes has been rectified, and my 2016 S1000 has the best factory tune I've ever experienced.

Welcome.
The AX-Fied helped with stalling and erratic idle on my 1200s. I didn't need it on the 1300. Good Luck, enjoy and don't get too many speeding tickets.
