mirror only replacement, any tips?

I need to replace the mirror due to a small crack.
Looking at the parts fiche it looks like it just presses on to a small round knob and is held on by a small clip.
Is this just pried off? Then snapped back on?
Thanks, Steve

Re: mirror only replacement, any tips?

IIRC when I looked into replacing my scratched mirror(s), the repair fiche mentions moving the mirror as far inward (toward the center of the bike) to gain access to the ball stalk and removing the metal clip first with a pick. Then remove the mirror. Replace the clip and snap in the new mirror. I ended up fixing my issue with some wide angle mirror overlays that are discussed in another thread. About $129 for the set from Pirates Lair.

Re: mirror only replacement, any tips?

I removed the turn signal lens and looked in the back. You can see the metal clip that needs removal to take the mirror and its plastic works out of the main mirror housing. Go slow. I have not done this yet but like many simple projects, this one seems full of traps and no reversal paths.
My mirrors are looking good but have a very faint pattern of super small dots that cause trouble sometimes. I think the next time I get some excess lunch money I'll order up a pair of replacements and start with new glass. I have looked at the yellow overlay repair parts that are sold by one of the large suppliers, don't care for them myself.

Well I've ordered a stock mirror. We'll see how it goes once it comes in.

The reflective surface is on the face of the glass closest to you. Be very careful handling it and no scraping of excess adhesive or tape residue. Good luck.

Re: mirror only replacement, any tips?

Will probably have a peel off protective plastic overlay for shipping. Leave that on until installation is complete. If not I'd cover the mirror surface with painters tape-the green is less sticky than the blue. As mentioned above the reflective surface is on the face of the mirror, and the glass is VERY soft and scratches easily. I learned the hard way using a razor blade scraper to attempt to clean off over spray and ruined one. You need to remove the clip first to get the old one out. Repair fiche says move the mirror as far to one side as possible and go between the mirror and housing with a pick. Beech indicates you can get to it by removing the turn signal lense-IDK. Good luck and take your time.

P.S.-I'd order an extra clip too. Saves crawling around on your hands and knees if you launch it across the garage/driveway. FWIW.

Re: mirror only replacement, any tips?

They only fly that far if you can go in search for it.

If it will result in catastrophic damage to let go with one hand, a dropped object will only go just out of reach of the other hand and in plain sight. It's one of the official garage rules.

Ball bearings are always dropped on a sloped surface with large cracks in it.

Re: mirror only replacement, any tips?

The mirror surface is EXTREMELY thin! Very easy to crack while applying pressure to pop the new mirror back onto the ball. Apply tape and press per instructions in shop manual. DAMHIK.

The CD is invaluable if you do almost anything to this motorcycle.

Re: mirror only replacement, any tips?

Your BMW dealer. Do not buy hijacked units on the web. It is well worth it if you own the bike. I print up needed pages and take them to the shop to work from. BMW manuals are made for people who know something (a mechanic). If your looking for a step by step with hand holding like a honda or harley manual, use the bmw one with a Clymers in tandom. Many procedures in the bmw manual seem long and weird, but they will keep you out of trouble. Later you can add your shortcuts.

Just got my MOA Magazine. Bob's BMW is having a 15% off sale for the month of May. If you're a member, a good way to get the Repair CD a little cheaper!

Re: mirror only replacement, any tips?

Actually, I believe that BMW motorcycle shop manuals for newer models (all CaniBUS bikes) come in the form of a DVD, rather than a CD.

Re: mirror only replacement, any tips?

You are correct-the P/N I gave was for the "DVD". It is updateable and is titled "Repair Manuals K Models K4x. My error.

Re: mirror only replacement, any tips?

Well the mirror came in and I didn't have any Tech dvd to go by.
I couldn't find a way to get that snap ring off with any tools that I had, so I figured if you could snap it on, you could snap it off, and that's what I did.
The replacement mirror came with a snap ring already installed so there was no need to order a replacement.
I taped the mirror, sprayed a little WD-40 on to the stock, and pushed....pushed...pushed...then snap!
Removed the tape, no cracks!
I feel like the whole thing was dumb luck. Oh well.

Re: mirror only replacement, any tips?

Congratulations! Next time use silicon grease to lubricate the plastic. WD-40 evaporates and is NOT a good longer term lubricant. FWIW.

Silicon on the plastic moving parts (commonly sold as Silicon Dielectric Grease) and waterproof "grease" on metals. I use Bel Ray Waterproof Grease that was suggested on another thread here.
