Again, not wanting to hijack your thread, but you asked. This was how I got it,

and after I crashed it,

(poor exposure)

I'm hoping after my daughter's graduation in the spring I'll have a bit more time and a bit more $ to lavish on it, so that I can ride it again, and of course book an appointment with an orthopedic surgeon for when I get home after the ride.

Not to worry Eric, I've just updated my Last Will and Testament:

Paragraph Fifth: To my good friend, Eric, who I promised to remember in my Will,

"Hi There Eric!"

Didn't you sell that old GS because you were short on space in there?

Dropped the oil pan tonight to clean out the filter screen....pretty clean...good sign I guess....I'm sure it's never been done.

First thing I do with a used bike that hasn't run in a while is drop the pan and assess.

That is pristine compared to the sh$$ I've seen...

Fantastic work!

I'm shooting for Monday. That would make it 18 days from picking it up in the USA to stripping it to engine and frame to riding it.

Re: My Wes Cooley via I-BMW

Well John.....
I have had a busier than normal week at work.....but I'm having some issues with carbs leaking...think that is solved...it's coming but getting the fine tuning done is taking some time...
In the mean time....33mm Smoothbores!!! Now that's Old School!!! Not sure if I will put them in...kinda just messing around.... These things have gotten pricey!! Yikes..

Also these classic Street Stroker shocks have found their way back to me...they should look great on the Cooley!!

I am a little frustrated that I'm not riding the bike yet...I mean after all I have had the bike 3 weeks already and it only sat for around ten years.....

Re: My Wes Cooley via I-BMW

Things have stalled a bit...when putting the carbs back on after rebuilding them...they were still leaking...but why....when tested off the bike, they did not leak. Then someone suggested I check out the cam timing. Well I did that and sure enough it's out one pin in the chain.

I'll have buddy that knows way more about this help me this week to get the timing set right.

Re: My Wes Cooley via I-BMW

What a fantastic thread, thanks so much for sharing the journey. I have a bit of a "problem" with bikes myself and it's getting to be "that time of year" around here so perhaps I'll share some workshop pics myself.

The cam timing should be pretty easy to address but me being me, I'd borrow a borescope to examine the valves before I buttoned that back up.

Good luck with getting that beauty back on that road

That odd. I wonder why the cam timing is off? Another mystery.

My guess would be that someone was doing some shadetree "tuning."

I see it all the time with older sporting machines. I adopted a CB900F a while back that had been the subject of many, misguided attempts to make it into a racing machine. The head had been subjected to porting and the cams noodled with. I say subjected because I suspect they used dull tiger teeth as the means of grinding.

You could be right...but everything else on this bike is so nice and well cared for...and the period mods say there was not likely "shade tree" stuff going on. The cams are stock cams.
Will be taking a closer look at the valves too. Fun stuff...

Re: My Wes Cooley via I-BMW

It really does look like a total gem.

Rarely have I purchased a bike that looked better than the pictures...that's a real score.

One thought is that when the cams were set, they took the slack out of the wrong side of the chain. I have seen that more than once.

In any event, I am sure you will have it running great in no time...thanks again for such a great thread.

Be careful using that front wheel chock - it is not good enough to hold the bike - especially when you take the front straps off. It would be a shame after all the work you have put into this bike to have it tip over.

Re: My Wes Cooley via I-BMW

Trevor, back in the day, I tried to refinish/paint my 4:1 header and used paint meant for furnaces that was heat tolerant. The paint always burned off at the manifold. What paint did you use?

Also, left side engine case...are you missing a black, round sticker there? Hard to find or just didn't get to it yet?

How difficult would it be to find the original exhausts to put it back to stock?

A most excellent job on a most excellent collectible bike. I truly am envious. Really. Great job!

Thanks John. I use VHT header/exhaust paint...http://www.jegs.com/i/PJ1/322/SP998/10002/-1 it goes on flat but once heated up it starts to brighten up a bit. Then I just take a wet rag and rub it like crazy to get a better shine.

The stator cover is missing the emblem and also has a nic in the bottom from the bike going down...I have another cover that I just got back from my plating guy...it also has the proper emblem on it...I will swap them out soon.

Exhaust...well they are hard to find and very expensive as they were unique to the Cooley...buuuuut....the 1979 GS1000L model has exhaust that can be put on mine that are just like the Cooley exhaust except you have to move a heat shield and it has an "L" stamped on it somewhere....but they look just like the stock ones.....and as luck would have it a buddy of mine just happens to have a nice set....I am buying them but not sure if I will pit them on or not.....I really like the period correct Kerker.

Re: My Wes Cooley via I-BMW

Well, the stock exhaust would be a nice insurance policy to have if you ever wanted to sell or show it. What little I know about these things, restored to stock brings the value as close to max as possible, dependent upon the type of restoration. If you merely cleaned mostly everything, then you are probably very close to max valuation.

Of course, tooling around, the Kerker raises the roof on fun factor!

Re: My Wes Cooley via I-BMW

Well after 5 months of waiting on paper work..shipping...a trip to the border...30 day resto...and registering it here....I took the Cooley out for it's first ride in Canada!!!

The bike runs great...little fine tuning for the carbs but it ran great, nice and smooth and pulls hard!! No leaks!! And it handled so nice...glad I put the Sonic springs up front...

Re: My Wes Cooley via I-BMW

I've been following this thread with interest - fascinating to see an old bike restored. I hope my 95 K100RS looks like that now. (Sold it 1 year ago to my mechanic).

I had forgotten about fork braces and the like. Had at least one of those on an early R bike, but can't remember which one now. Probably an R100RS.

How does this old bike compare to new ones in terms of handling, power, braking, etc?

There really is no comparison on any level...especially to my k1300r....

I will "improve" the brakes by adding ss lines....braking has come a LONG way in 30 years.
And lets just say anti lock braking is very good to have....

Handling....well the fork brace does help on those skinny forks....the Suzuki GS bikes were known as the best handling Japanese bikes of the late 70s and early 80s...I added the Sonic for springs up front which makes a big difference....the rear shocks are not the best and I may upgrade them....but I don't plan on riding this bike hard.

As for power....well it's around 95hp but the bike weighs in at over 500lbs....but it pulls hard! Top speed should be around 120mph or a little more....

I have a few of these old bikes and people ask me all the time...."you must like riding your new BMW the most"?.....not true...for me...I love the feeling of these old bikes when you push them...they twist and flex when riding hard in the sweepers and I know I'm on a motorcycle proper. Also when riding the BMW...120mph feels like a stroll in the park...going 100mph on a 35 year old motorcycle is a full time job! And I like that it demands all my attention.

Lastly, I liken having an interest in these old bikes the same as someone interested in muscle cars....
Me loving my fast, technical BMW and liking my old muscle bikes...is no different than someone say loving their new Porsche but also loving their 69 Camaro.....
So in short..lol....I love them all for the different senses they stimulate.

Trevor

Did you get a collector plate for the bike? Look forward to seeing it in person.

I'm applying for it as we speak! I'm also going to apply for the multi collector plate...with four bikes I would Dave lots!

Re: My Wes Cooley via I-BMW

Trevor,
I am really impressed with the quick and thorough restoration. I'm glad everything wound up working out. Only you know how close it came to not happening. Oh and I got your gift in the mail today. Thanks for that. I am guessing you don't have a friend visiting Colorado Springs really?
