Motorcycling is a

So, sure somehow 'Curling' ( ) is a Winter Olympics 'medal'able' 'sport' though one could argue its a 'game' much like lawn darts, requiring negligible physical requirements.

Got to thinking as to whether motorcycling is a sport or hobby or something else.
What's your take? As always, a poll may be found above

That would depend on the mood I am in. Or "all of the above".

It is a hobby, and less expensive that my RC plane hobby when all is added up.

It is a sport on track days.

It is a passion when on twisty's or withheld for long periods of time.

It is an excuse to get away from the wife once in a great while.

Re: Motorcycling is a

Hi All,

I'm going with Trond on this one. Motorcycling has been a part of me most of my adult life. My "kind of wife" (not going to elaborate on this point now) has said I'm 60, too old to be riding. Our daughter (in college) says Nope, he's not ready to put away the boots and gloves just yet And as for me i didn't say anything, But the bike is not going away any time soon, If I could afford it my butt might be riding a new S1000rr this year. So to answer the poll, is it a sport ? Hell Yes ! is it a hobby ? Guess you could say that. Mostly it's a passion. To a lot of us in a sense it partially defines who we are. Sometimes I don't want to go riding, I NEED to go riding. Some of my happiest memories are directly or indirectly related to riding.

+1 Sometimes just riding for the enjoyment and sightseeing. Others riding bit my spirited and the focus it requires blocks out everything else, thus provding a rest from life's other problems. Plus it's fun & who doesn't look better with a helmet on.

Voted passion - interesting that this category has more than 50 percent of the votes at this point.

Guess it always has been and always will be a passion for me helped along by a fine board like this to "express" that feeling; and, really hope that its contagious for our younger members as well.

Several selected 'all of the above' (which would include sport). I haven't voted (yet) because the choices are too limited. (for me)

I voted "passion". Since buying my first BMW (my first bike), it has truely become a passion. It is a sport and a hobby - to me. Hence the passion.

Re: Motorcycling is a

Yeah, Vic, the choices on what it means to many riders are far too limiting. Not that we are wishy-washy or undecided, but that sometimes in life ANY choice is too limiting, especially with regard to bikes!

For ME, Motorcycling is MOSTLY a:

* Hobby
* Sport
* Passion & not a sport or hobby
* An excuse to get away from the wife
* None of the above; answer in a reply
* ALL of the above (I'm not clear what it is )

Riding is most certainly a passion but for me it is -almost- all of the above (since I don't have a wife. ) But, it is so much more. Other than marriage and childrearing, there is little that has changed my life (and changed it for the better) as much as riding.

When riding like we did near the Blue Ridge Mtns. years ago and Bear went off the road twice --I'd call that style of riding sport. Riding for over 40 years, like I have -- that's passion.

way to commute to work and use the HOV lane! Mostly, that's it...I love to ride, but curvy mountain roads are a ways away down here. Used to love living in Boulder, CO and a few buddies and I would take off and ride up in the mountains for lunch. Have no real desire to go 500-600 miles a day on a bike. Love to ride, though...

I would say hobby - passion seems a bit too full on for me.

Speedy cars used to be my "hobby" - since learning to ride 4 years ago, it just takes that to another level...

It's also a tool though - I need to "commute" 400 miles at weekends often, and the bikes is the least stressful way to do it (as long as it is not snowing ).

The other aspect of riding for me is that it is a challenge, new skills to learn and master etc.

There are no better (terrestrial) ways to do my A to Bs than on a bike.

Obsession. I wanted a motorcycle from the time i was 5 years old, i have had at least one since i was 9 several times breaking the 20 bike mark over the years. I have had a bike registered and rideable on the road since 1985. I like nothing more than to get a bike in boxes or one that says hasn't run in years. I like nothing more than riding, working on them, talking about them, and basically having them in my life. Didn't vote because i didn't see mental illness up there.

For me it definitely a passion. It's my way of ridding myself of the day or weeks frustration. Whether it's a day trip down to FL. or a weekend run to the mountains of N.C. nothing else I do seems to get me to relax and think at the same time as a day in the seat away from the phone, job or any of life's other stresses.

Obsession might be a better description for me, i love almost anything two wheels (harleys excluded and the Ugly vision from polaris) even manco minibikes, a beater moped, scooters are dangerous like i said almost anything with two wheels and a motor.

Re: Motorcycling is a

I didn't get into biking until relatively late - about 42 - but I'd always wanted one. Now some of my best memories are times on the bike, whether it's with friends or riding solo.

I find it noticeable how many of us own more than one bike, These are objects that we tend to accumulate.

There is, of course, a well known formula for determining how many bikes you should own:

N + 1

where N is....

....the number of bikes you already own

HEYYYY!!! Where's the "escape from the HUSBAND"??? Noooo I don't have one but hey I just wanted to see it up there!

I voted passion I guess - I just like it, sometimes I feel like I "need" to get out and just ride, go as far as I can and then when I'm completely lost, turn on the Zumo for "go home"

Funny, cause some wives call it a death wish. I do have a car (BMW 1983 320i) and a truck (F250) for when the car breaks or the bike needs to be transported, BTW, neither has happened, they are BMW's after all.

Re: Motorcycling is a better than Golf.

Yes it is true. Motorcycling has replaced golf when I ride rapidly for over 1 hour. When pressing the road I use all of my concentration so the stress fades and I feel a new calm.
Usually I about double the speed of road signs (if the are below 40 mph) for turns and to be sure there are no mud,no pot holes, no leaves or danger road hazards keys my concentration with such intensity that I become very calm.
Truly; Zen in the art of Speed.
Bliss at 130MPH

Fox Alpha.

Ridin' and wrenchin' is where it's at. I know. My little 12 has propelled my sorry ass up 150 mph. Nothn' Like it.

I also enjoy flight sim, namely DCA, which is DC (virtual) Airlines.

At this moment, I am flying a load of motorcycle parts (it sez here) from Casablanca to Gibralter.

Its..... FUN
I like having fun.
I enjoy working on the bike, commuting, planning the trip and taking the trip.
I LOVE passing harleys.
I'm sure my Wife thinks I'm nuts when I tell her I giggle inside my helmet when I ride.
OK, maybe she knows, but what the hell, I'm having Fun

I answered "hobby". I certainly wouldn't call it a sport (for me), and having only recently gotten back into it, it's hard to call it a passion. I ride because I enjoy it. I wouldnt want to, but I could get by without it (and I just did for five years). But it's great to be back in the saddle again!

I dont know about everyone else, but I was celebrating freedom this weekend on the road...

I agree completely. Thanks!

After working long hours at a stressful job, it's great to walk out of the office, throw a leg over the bike, and feel the stress leave even as I'm leaving the parking lot.

It was a hobby for me until recently. It has become an obsession and I just cannot get enough.I am guessing that my cross country trip flipped a switch which is what everyone told me would happen. Riding is the only thing that lightens the load of life for me.
