I STOLE this picture. Used it in a PowerPoint presentation, entitled, "Air Permitting for a New Bulk Oil Terminal, or How to Buy a New K1300S - the hard way." The presentation contained mostly boring stuff about preparing an air permit application for this bulk oil terminal. First picture was of me handing five hunnert dollar bills to HRF Wayne for the deposit. The last picture was the one you see here. I gave the paper at the 2013 Annual Conference of PNWIS (Pacific Northwest Intergallactic Section) of the Air & Waste Management Association, in Victoria, BC.

It was a good conference. Nobody died.

Whenever I lead rides here in VT, I have to make sure and tell everyone that it's ok to pass
on a DYL. It's really annoying when one rider refuses to pass and holds up the rest.

Wow, resurrecting a two year old post.

Anyway, this wasn't meant to be a personal hit on you Mike, moreso some playful fun with you GS guys. More recently I've just stepped away from talking about the GS as it seems to have become such a divisive topic vs a ribbing for those involved.

I will say that I have new-found respect for the GS after DGR last year with EricM which I've previously mentioned. I expect that the new watercooled version with 130 HP would even be to my liking though I still can not personally get over the looks, call me vain.

Anyways, you guys could use EricM's excuse when he got pulled over in another state for
passing on a DYL. "Well, I ride in Vermont and it's legal there. So I thought it was legal

ONLY in VERMONT, where it is LEGAL

And that means there is a "Safe to Pass" triangular yellow sign, present on the shoulder--despite double yellows as far as the eye can see. Or as common sense dictates. Use signals and alacrity. Caveat: If anything happens, you are held to blame. according to VT State Police.

It's an old workaround Federal Highway safety funding that those clever Vuhmauntuhs worked out in their legislature to avoid keeping their state in line for the future and receive federal highway funding. I have a picture somewhere......

Motorcycle rides were never meant to put you in a position where you have to constantly stare at a cars brake lights in assumption that they will do something stupid. My wordy answer to yes i do roll over a double yellow. In addition I never stay behind anyone I cant see around.

In Washington there are plenty of bad drivers with no cojones. They will not pass another car. So when this builds up two or three cars, I always give the cars the first chance to legally pass each other. If they do not do it I show no mercy and pass them all. My favorite multi pass was years ago a string of eleven cars, windy road on the Olympic peninsula took them all in a tricky spot in an older 911. Would have been a slam dunk on the K bike, as it was I pulled back in at the crest of a hill. I have noticed that there is way too much double yellow paint out there. Much of it has no rational. I think it is just to slow traffic.

Re: Do You Pass On Double Yellows

I did, and I ended up in a ditch when a guy in a truck decided not to wait as I did.

But, I pass on DYL if there are no cars coming at all and I can see for at least half a mile out.
Otherwise I wait until I can see no cars coming and see far out.

Re: Do You Pass On Double Yellows

My opinion of DYs has the George Carlin Seal of Approval™

I rage at impotent drivers who lack lane discipline all the time, and pass over the DY whenever I feel it's safe (and the driver ahead of me is an idiot™).

Seriously though I think there's a very fine line there between passing safely and being a danger to others on the road, and I get very animated when I see people who don't seem to understand the difference.

Recently up here I called the local PD to report a woman who was jaunting erratically into the oncoming lane in the twisties because she had no clue how to handle her vehicle in the corners and just threw caution to the wind (rather than using a turn-out) when she saw me coming up behind her, cutting corners while still going slower than what I consider "a comfortable speed." A week later I rode the same route and saw that all of the lines had been freshly repainted.

Me though? I get stuck behind slow-moving cars that refuse to use turn-outs enough in the twisties with no safe place to pass that when I do see the opportunity, I won't hesitate to take it, DY be damned. Thankfully not too many LEOs up in the hills.

I have been very tempted to kick in door panels after the fourth passed turn-out in first gear....

On one lane roads in the states, especially narrow mountain passes, we sometimes have a short section of road where there's a double-wide shoulder on one side, the size of a full extra lane. It's there so that slower vehicles can pull off to the side and let traffic pass.

9 times out of 10 the only people who know how to use them are the ones going fast enough you don't mind being behind them.

Ah, ok we have those, different name is all.
Usually there are 3 cars behind the slow poke, they then try to pass him going ooo say 3 mph faster than he is.
By the time they're all past the extra lane is gone, not a problem on a bike, not so good when you're driving your old pickup.

Around here those lanes are extra short, the yielding vehicle needs to slow down if something other than a bike wants to pass.

Some assholes will actually pull halfway into the turn-out lane to stop other drivers from passing them on the other side there. Makes me livid.

Re: Do You Pass On Double Yellows

I didn't so much when I've lived in other states, but since moving to Massachusetts, I've simply found that double yellows are completely irrelevant. It's not like they're painted according to some engineering study here in New England, they'll just lay down a double-yellow for an entire 10 mile stretch of road whether you've got good visibility or not. They're so lazy that sometimes they can't even bother putting down two solid yellows and only put down a single solid yellow.

Double yellow can be a useful guideline, just like the double nickel. Does it really make sense to strictly follow the guidelines, or simply to pass when it's prudent and not pass when it's imprudent?

Re: Do You Pass On Double Yellows

MaxdB is right about the line painters. There's no science there. And every time they re-paint a stretch of road, they see it as an opportunity to eliminate perfectly good passing zones. Is there a union rule that requires that they all have to be Democrats? They're sure that they can determine the best time for you to pass better than you can. Just like spending your money.

Re: Do You Pass On Double Yellows

I will pass someone if they're being unusually slow, regardless of what the paint onteh road says. I make sure, though, that the car driver knows I'm going to pass so I don't spook him with the Remus and thus piss him off. It's never a good idea to piss off a dirver...I might run into him later in the day.

I'll pass on the double yellow. However, the line painters are simply following the directions of their corporate masters. More paint, more product needed AND more dividend for the corporate masters.

Sometimes their plans backfire. We used to wait for the one (only one) passing zone on US276 heading up to the Parkway. Its all tourist traffic and we tried to be patient and play nice. Then they repaved and eliminated the passing zone. Fine. No more waiting.

I just get tired of the idiots that seem to purposely impede traffic. I've found that in most cases the sooner you make the pass, the better. Except when there's more than one to overtake. I really have a tough time with the reasoning that you can not pass on a DYL when I've been doing it most of my life. That'll be my defense too if I ever get stopped for it. And this to is one of the many reasons why I love the K bikes so much. Here in Flatistan, we get the conga line of cars (and certain motorcycles) just tooling along, bumper to bumper, just under the speed limit. I have passed 15+ cars at one shot because I can.

Not to say that it is safe and I do not recommend it to anyone with a faint heart. But there it is.

Come to Florida! I'll cook, buy your favorite libations (within reason of course), then we can go for a ride and I'll let you take the dirt (sugar sand)!

If I lived in another part of the country, the GS might work better.
