Re: Do You Pass On Double Yellows

Since acquiring my current ride in November I've had two run-ins with the law (actually three if a parking violation is thrown in) both of which have cost me money and points. One such incident was for crossing a single yellow line (our version of no passing). I'm down to my last card which if I lose means an extended period of time sitting stationary in the garage, polishing and pretending. I'm trying my best to do right by the law but that's as easy as keeping one's eyes off of a beautiful woman.

Frank,

Just curious, was that in Japan or here Stateside? Also, how old are you and were you on the "S" pictured with your name?

Hi Tyson
That would be japan. Age wise I'm closing in on a quinquagenerian. I did post a picture of my ride so it very could have been me. Do I look much younger?

Cheers

Re: Do You Pass On Double Yellows

Frank,

Well, the red bike is a cop magnet for certain. It looks fast just sitting on the sidestand! But, you'd think Japanese cops would show more respect to their elders. Of course, "closing on a quinquagenerian" is not the same as being old. You need to be able to pull off the full face and have a mane of white hair pop out. I think that has saved me more than a couple of times.

Anyway, ride a Vespa (or a Bianchi or a Trek) until the points on your license go away!

Be safe.

No doubt! This has happened to me more than once...one time, the cop just began laughing, asked me why I got pulled over, told him I had no idea, said I was speeding, I said really? And why are you laughing? Well, seeing you (white beard and hair) , I know there is hope for me to ride some day.

Enjoy your ride, but slow down a little bit. Thank you officer.

Re: Do You Pass On Double Yellows

I'm white around the edges but not full mane white yet. The cops that pulled me over the first time were, all things considered, quite generous. When asked if I knew what I was being stopped for I said no, and they rattled off four infractions: speeding, driving in the passing lane too long, not using my blinker when changing lanes, and one other I can't remember. They were kind enough to write me up for the second only. I was going about 130kmh in an 80kmh zone and thought for certain I was on my way to a dreaded "red ticket", ie suspension of my license. White hair probably didn't help me, but feigning the ignorant foreigner sometimes comes in handy here.

Re: Do You Pass On Double Yellows

It is hard NOT too when the general 'caged' public is ignorant to the multitude of 'turn-outs' afforded them on mountain roads. Most So California "flat-landers" seem to think "turn-outs" are for shutterbugs or a need to use the bushes. The fact they have 3 or more vehicles closely following them while they tip-toe 15 or more MPH below the posted speed limit seldom gives them clue.

You can easily recognize a "flat-lander" on approach. You first smell their brakes, and their brake lights are perpetually ON!

I've got a question, I have short white hair, take my helmet off? This has been educational. I've not been stopped on the bike, but a few times in the cage. But, I have taken full advantage of other past circumstances. They've warned me.

You got the warning. Kudos. One of the things that come with gray/white hair is eyesight issues. Nough said. But, someone mentioned women, all right.

Re: Do You Pass On Double Yellows

So if I'm understanding what I can read in your picture, you WERE NOT actually pulled over by an "officer of the law" but instead mailed this warning after somebody called in your plate number? If this becomes the normal way of doing things I'll need to get a bit "creative" in the adornment of "my" plate.

Re: Do You Pass On Double Yellows

I was always of the impression that double yellows are 'suggestions' rather than actual laws!

Going with that....sure, I'll pass on them if I'm behind some doof who's deep into his important text message or some similar foolishness!

One place I will NEVER pass (unless I'm on an interstate where it's reasonable to assume all the vehicles in my lanes are travelling in the same direction) is when the road bends to the right and the vehicle I want to pass is blocking or even partially blocking my view of a section of the uncoming lane.....cars, trucks, deers & boulders can hide in that unseen spot! I have to be able to see the entire stretch of blacktop I'll be occupying before turning the wick up!

Re: Do You Pass On Double Yellows

I did it last week at a RR crossing. A really slow driver, consistently 10-20 miles under the limit. 5 mph across the tracks, I had first in place, no one mirrors, NO one coming down the hill. Boom, left'em back there. Besides, there were two 90 degree turns and a school zone a mile ahead, and that driver might have done the low crawl. That driver was so slow, that I was braking for the first turn and the slow driver had not yet crested the hill behind me. I am not a fast driver, and use the limit signs as info of coming attractions. I respected the double yellow for 5-6 miles.

Farm vehicles are a given. So is the guy tap-dancing on the brakes.
If I can see the space to do it, I'm gone.
Passed a crawling school bus, straight road, no drop off points, and a new AK can.
As I passed I see a little fist pop out the window. Future rider I'm sure !!
PS: The can made me do it !

This post brought back a memory...

Typically I don't follow anything longer then I care to, yes there are exceptions, but they are just that. There was a day however that I was really "enjoying" VA 250 with my cousin. In what was a first for me (on single lane road) we caught up to an ambulance in transit. Lights blazing we find ourselves on it's rear during one of the better parts on that fine road.

On the intercom I relay, "I guess it would be wrong for us to pass even though we obviously wouldn't be holding them up."

Instead we chose to turn around and re-run the fun for several miles before u-turning again. We caught the ambulance SEVERAL more times, each time turning around for several miles. I discussed with my cousin how I thought a one wheeled gurney on the back of my bike (ala uni-go) would have a better chance at saving a life. It was then that he reminded me that such action might induce cardiac arrest if that was not already the issue at hand.

So what do you think, should rural mountainous areas employ motorcycle riding gurney hauling hospital transit?

Maybe you should start your own damn poll! J/k.

Your story reminded me of a time in New Mexico when I came up behind some old fire trucks heading to a fire. There was a headwind and it was record breaking winds, the hardest I've ever ridden in. The trucks had lights and sirens going but were only going 45-50 mph. I sat behind them for a while but finally just went around them. Not even sure if it was a double yellow but it was still kinda wierd passing an emergncy vehicle like that.

The only reason I pass on a double yellow is the photon cannon has not been invented yet (or at least small enough for the bike), but then you might have to ride through the debris

Re: Do You Pass On Double Yellows

I always look well ahead for anything that could make for a left turn before I pass on double yellow. No one in California picks up the now apparently optional "turn indicators" package on thier vehicles. Must be a pricey package. Cagers don't expect passing on double yellow and probably wont even look for you before hanging that left turn. Not to mention a lot of double yellows are for that very reason, lots of turns off the primary road in that area.

Re: Do You Pass On Double Yellows

just yesterday I was in north ga doing the twistys and rounded a corner and there were 4 cars following a farm tractor doing 10-15 mph in a45 mph zone. of course this is an area of nothing but curves and all double yellow lines. 2 of the cars were out of town license plates. after a 1/2 mile of this and there being opportunities for the cars to pass on a double yellow, hell no, they just kept following. after more of this, a look down 1/4 mile, double yellow lines, 4 cars and a tractor.....whoosh.. ..I'm in front and on my way. I do not do it often and only when I know there is no way I can meet an on coming vehicle, but gezzzz, let's use some common sense here.

Re: Do You Pass On Double Yellows

Yes,
you have to remember, that these lanes are marked that way because you could be driving a fully loaded cement mixer weighing in at 10 tons+ and the laws are taking into account the slowest and worst handling vehicles and NOT a modern motorcycle.

PS. cops don't like to hear that, I know, I tried! Cop says we can't have different laws for different vehicles and wrote me up.
Here in Ca.
trailers of any kind are limited to 55mph on 70 mph highways, but that's ok!
Also when I am passing someone, the last thing I am looking at is my speedometer, I get it done as quickly and safely as possible or I wouldn't be here after 50 years of doing it.

You know what I'm seeing lately?!? Damn cellphone losers texting and driving, swerving all over the place. Going into oncoming traffic, nearly hitting curbs or driving into ditches. I'm getting the hell out of that situation every time. All other times none of my motorcycles has ever bent the law

In my home province Ontario Canada it is legal as the traffic act says "In Ontario, lane markings generally serve an advisory or warning function and by themselves do not possess any legal force,"

If signs say do not pass then it is not legal....I agree with others here where a Motorcycle can accelerate and pass safely and a car not so much....always amazes me that some car drivers resent being passed on a DYL!

I'm also from Ontario, and it's believed that the unbroken white, or double white, you don't/can't pass. In an emergency situation I can understand the need to, but under normal driving conditions it's not allowed (so I think).Save</span>

White seperates cars going in the same direction...yellow seperates oppsite direction traffic....passing on a Double yellow IMHO is legal in ontario...BTW it is the only province in Canada where it is legal!

Re: Do You Pass On Double Yellows

I've done it again. Came up on a box truck following a 25 mph car. Judged they were together moving to new digs after a mile or so follow. Came to a clearing straight. Passed them.
I treat this thread as a confession booth. Really, "I won't do it again".

Re: Do You Pass On Double Yellows

When I am driving a my RV or van, no, I really don't do it.
Just as all rules have to consider a fully loaded , top heavy ,cement mixer, who's maxed out weight prohibits even safely travelling alot of curvy roads at any speed!
But a motorcycle???????????? needs only a fraction of the room to safely execute most straitaways.

If we have to confess for each DYL pass, I might not have time to do any riding.... or working.... or living for that matter Do they offer an Executive Comfort Suite Confessional?

Ok so just confess when you have done it to avoid the cops you think are turning around, that ought to cut it down a little

Sorry guys, anything that I say [confess] can and will be used against me in a court of law.... I'm not sure what you are talking about

If someone wants to point to my previous post, well uh, that was just locker room talk and I still don't know what you are referring to

In the U.K. the DWL are put down in places that dictate it's unsafe to pass, as soon as it's safe to pass the the dashed lines resume and you can crack on to your hearts content or at least to the next static speed camera device(at least three different types plus mobile camera vans).
Having enjoyed four holidays in Western US it appears that the road planners put down DYL just because they can.

I was on a two-lane road in Indiana. 55 mph speed limit. I got behind an old guy driving around 30 mph and hugging the right shoulder, leaving lots of space between him and the DYL. So I passed him without crossing the line.

A couple of minutes later I got pulled by a trooper. He said he pulled me for crossing the DYL; when I told him that I hadn't done that, he turned me loose. Apparently in Indiana it does matter.

Brother Rob, more likely he just wasn't sure how to write it, or possibly trying to be nice I suppose. I would hazard a guess that if you are not in a state where "lane sharing" (splitting) is legal that most would write you for that even if you didn't cross DYL.

That's why all you unlawful folks should rethink things. Slow down... buy a Harley.
