Re: Best K Bike Ever?

I will have to say the 2013 K1600GTL. It is wickedly fast and has the greatest comfort for real long distance riding that I do. In the city the thing is a nimble as a bicycle. It can putter along in traffic jams without any problems and accelerate to warp speed in no time at all. I now have 12000 km and no problems of any kind.

I also liked the K1300GT because of its engine, but the seat finally got me.

There are days where I think a K1300S will be a nice addition to the fleet.

My 06 K1200S has been trouble free at 55,000 miles. And a blast to ride. I have to admit the stories make me nervous

Re: Best K Bike Ever?

Having owned 2 2004 K1200RS models and riding 138000miles on one of them(before crashing it) and riding the other approx. 30,000miles, I would have to say they are great sport touring machines. Performance and reliability were excellent. I "donated" the crashed bike to a BMW mechanic who promptly got it running again. It's still going strong with over 140,000 miles on it. I sold the second K1200 in order to purchase a new S1000RR. Really enjoying the S1000RR, it takes the art of riding to a whole other level. BMW has succeeded in building one of the ultimate machine/instruments in that bike.

Re: Best K Bike Ever?

The K13S is a beautiful thoroughbred, with the heart of a champion and the power of 175 stallions under the saddle.

I can't imagine what more you could possibly want ? (. . . from a motorcycle . . .)

Re: Best K Bike Ever?

In answer to JER K13S as to " what more could you want in a motorcycle" my answer is "the S1000RR". Not the most practical or cushy as the touring bikes but the ride and handling are intoxicating.

Re: Best K Bike Ever?

I have owned 2 K bikes, a 1996 K1100RS and a 2004 K1200RS which is my current bike.
The K1100 was totally reliable, suited me well and I did a lot of long distance mileage on it with no fatigue at all.... But the long mile ages were done over 7 years ago.
I have just completed a 6200 km trip with my wife over 21 days and although the bike was superb and flawless, I was getting sore shoulders and wrists. Is it because I am older and less flexible? Possibly, but the K1200 is quite a different riding position, and I feel the K1100 was more suitable to me & my body size, arm length etc. fitted bar backs today in an effort to get a more comfortable and "bent arm" position - will advise how it works out.

Re: Best K Bike Ever?

I actually have already sold 3 of these John. This is plywood painted with acrylic paint. It has a folk look to it as the imperfections are what is the attraction. I was asked to make one for a guy out of some hardwoods. He asked if I could give it an embossed look for which I said yes. The price I had to give him if he really wanted it was very high as I explained, he would be paying me to make the templates. He did not care, just wanted his BMW sign.

One of my first stages of making the template was to paint a sign to get the scale of each part correct. When the client saw the template? he liked the imperfect look so much he bought the painted template, canceled the embossed hardwood design and ordered 2 other signs. I kept this one for me so I can go on and begin making my templates. They are great little man cave type signs. I am also thinking of making some other BMW things as, it is much nicer to work on small projects these days rather then the big heavy furniture pieces as the body is aging.

Why don't you put an ad in the classifieds? I'd buy one!
I'd want one that says K1300S

Yep, they were sitting on my desk whrn I arrived back from holiday. Thanks Scot. Just did a quick ride last night to check it out. The cables to the electrics from the left hand bar seem a bit stretched on full left lock, but this should not cause any problems?? Did you otice any issues with that? The turning at slow speeds is a bit quicker, and my riding position is better. Will take a longer ride on the weekend, but thus far it is a lot better. I also fitted a GT tall screen which has reduced the wind noise especially for the pillion.

Re: Best K Bike Ever?

I remember I had to cut a few of the cable ties and set new ones on. Just to give the cables a little relief, but I seem to remember it was the cables from the Throttle side.

Maybe it is because you are looking at it from the bottom of the world?

Aha, I will have to stand on my head then...<G>
and yes, I did have to cut some of the cable ties and redo them at different points. Will probably take a fresh look at it when I have the fairings off for some preventative maintenance over the winter & get it all sorted then.

Thumbs up Re: Best K Bike Ever?

Several weeks ago, a motorcyclist on a Honda Shadow was meandering down the street looking lost.

I waved him down to offer help.

We talked for a while and I told him I had a K12RS in the garage.

His response was "that's the one with the sexy curves."

Why yes it is!

Re: Best K Bike Ever?

I did not vote, have only been riding 2 years, bought an F650, 97 Triumph Tiger, 98 Motto Guzzi and now 03 KRS 2 weeks ago, flew to NY and rode it back to Florida Was supposed to go to Nova Scotia) Owner said it was in great shape, it wasn't changed the 3 fluids in P-lot in NY and headed home, bike had 9500 miles, ran great, when I got home changed radiator fluid, fuel filter and then took it to the dealer for them to do the brake and clutch fluid and look for faults, now the ABS is not talking w the ECU, so that is on the way to module master. Hoping for the best!

Since selling the Tiger, have been at a loss for speed and I think the KRS will be enough for me, I have bar risers sitting at the dealer, hope that is going to help with the fit, besides that love the bike, the cruise is so much better than a throttle lock and the white and dark blue finish of the Zebra is so beautiful, just hope I have good service from here on. Sold the 02 F650 last week, hated to see it go but there are really no trails here for it, but what a great bike! So now down to 2, but have the bug and ready for my next trip!

Best K-bike ever? My vote is for OXCART3, the stealth black K1300S sled sitting in my garage right now . Day before yesterday I changed her oil, and today I changed out the final drive lube. Only a hunnert or so miles on her Metz M5s. Ready for SGR 2014.

Hoo-AAH!!

Re: Best K Bike Ever?

I'd say mine today, 450 miles of the best riding roads Colorado has to offer.

2,400 miles in the last few days....+1,500 more to come then I guess I'll go home for a couple days , change a tire and the oil and hit the road again.I may wash it also...but then maybe not.

Motel tonight....need a change from camping. Mind you it is the El Dr'ado in Montrose CO.

Re: Best K Bike Ever?

I thought my K44 better known as the K1300GT was the best until I bought a K46 better known as a S1000RR. I made some changes so I could tour solo and boy does it do everthing that the K1300GT does ( other than take a passenger) at a quicker and more responsive manner.

Re: Best K Bike Ever?

This is of course very subjective...

I like bikes like I like women: naked (chauvinist pig I am).

So, the K12R and K13R (pretty much the same bike: the K13R being the K12R sans all the reliability/design issues).

Though, the stock KRs are not perfect.
They needed:
- raised handlebars
- suspension riser plates
- raised seat front mod

After those two mods, these bikes are superb. The handling is sharp, the ergos are spot on.
It really comes into being a super mega street fighter, whatever the name is nowadays.

It's so addictive, I can't get enough of it.

Without those mods, it's just a fast fat pig like unmod K12S. So hard to steer, specially for the street, where the KR are supposed to be designed for.

Just my 2 cents.

Then of course, the K12GT and K13GT already have the better ergos (raised handlebars) and all the bags, the better seat, you only need to raise the suspension.
But I've never own a GT and my KR has all that luggage space, but can be converted to pure naked in like a minute.

My first BMW was a 97 K1100RS in Black and silver. It was a great looking bike. Yes it would smoke on start up if left on the side stand but it made decent power. At 5-10 and a 30" inseam and a Corbin seat it was tip toe stop so you better hope there isnt a dip in the road where you put your foot down. It did have that annoying K Brick Buzz at 60-70. Id probably still have it if I didnt have to have a hip replacement that made riding it excruciatingly painful. Now I have an 06 K1200GT. When this bike is running well ( like not stalling at highway speeds which seems to be cured) its is a fantastic blend of comfort and power and can flat foot this bike. I thought about a k16 Gt and test drove one. It just didnt have that real motorcycle feel for me. Plus its like 150# heavier with the same HP and too complicated. My vote would be for the K GT but I hold a very warm spot for the KRS

I ride a 30th Anniversary K1300S. I am on my 5th set of mirrors which just keep splitting where they pivot. BMW had some new ones made for me and these appear to be fine. Second battery in 6 months and this one has just gone completely dead. I use a optimate 4 can bus charger and still there must be a 'large' drain. I have no alarm so I am puzzled. However, the handling suits me great and I am wearing out my toe sliders most rides.

Awesome
bike with just minor issues which I am sure will be sorted

I did not vote - I have limited experience with K bikes. I had an 04 K1200GT - the bike was an all around great bike. Where many feel it is one of the most reliable - I had nothing but trouble with mine. Three rear main seals in 17,000 miles - transmission seal once - slave cyclinder - starter.

The bike was at the dealers more than it was with me. I know that my bike was an exception - when it was running it was fantastic.

I sold it for an 07 K1200S. That bike had a few issues - antenna ring failure - brake rotors replaced under warranty - cam chain tensioner update. I absolutely loved my 07. I sold it thinking I wanted to explore more - dirt roads and all that - bought an 10 F800GS - never really took it on anything more than a few dirt roads. Used my KLR for the real dirty stuff.

Just bought an 13 K1300S - because of how much I liked the 07 - have not ridden it but one time about 20 miles and parked it for the winter.

The KS bikes are almost perfect for my style of sport touring. Ride almost exclusively solo - don't like or need to carry a lot of clothes or extra stuff. Like the somewhat aggressive riding position - love the power.

If my new KS turns out to be relatively issue free - I will then vote it as the best K bike for me. Don't have any experience with the older K bikes and have ridden the awesome K1600GT one time.

I'm thinking the best K bike ever is going to be the one that has minimal issues and miles and miles of great memories.[/quote]

OK, 10 months on and a few things have changed.
I have gotten used to the barbacks which fixed the sore shoulders issue. Have since done 1100km days with only a sore butt - resulted in fitting a Corbin seat, which is just superb and has resolved the comfort issue. The bike is about as good as I have had.
Now also own a K75S and a 98 K1200RS which is my "sport" ride.

Re: Best K Bike Ever?

I am not qualified to vote on this as I have only owned and rode a K1300R although I do know the brick motors are highly recommended, what I would say is one of the best bike ever made is the VFR800 and the K1300 has all the same attributes but is far more potent.

Re: Best K Bike Ever?

My opinion has not changed from my post a year and a month or so ago. OXCART, my beautiful 2013 K1300S, has hauled my ass from Pugetropolis down to SGR2015 and back, and tomorrow we're going over Hwy 20. She's clean (even her wheels are clean), polished, and ready to go. I love this machine.

THE BEST K BIKE EVER WOULD BE ONE THAT BMW PUT A DECENT ORING IN THE OUTPUT SHAFT THAT DID NOT FAIL AT 18-20,000 MILES, ONE THAT BMW PUT STAINLESS STEEL BRAKE CABLES ON AND ONE THAT HAD OHLIN'S SHOCKS OR SOMETHING DECENT BESIDES THE CRAP THAT BMW PUT ON THE K BIKES!

You should add that the bike is an '03, you bought it used '14 with 7,000 miles and no service records.

Re: Best K Bike Ever?

I've had the pleasure of owning the K12GT, K12S and the K13S. I loved them all. The GTs where easier on my wrists, but heavy on twisties. The S have amazingly stupid power and a blast both in acceleration and the twisties. All 3 bikes are unicorns around here, and I always get questions and receive compliments. For me, I have to go with the S.

Re: Best K Bike Ever?

I loved to walk into my garage and see the K bike siting there. Especially my black K! The GS doesn't touch me in the same way. Just saying. The GS isn't visceral, but practical. Brucev asked about the sportbike I'll get to replace the K and right now the RSV4 is my choice. Now to get the wife onboard!

Any particular reason you are not considering the RR? The RSV4 is a great bike and has the V4 engine - the V4 is the draw for many.

I won't say that I will not consider a different liter bike next year - but I'm so dialed in with the RR it would have to be something almost from another planet for me to make the move.

Getting the wife on board - I can honestly say - I have never bought anything checking with Karen first. Heck the house I live in now was completely framed before I found out about - Karen did that deal without mentioning it to me.

Bruce, as you mentioned, it's a v4... who needs ANOTHER reason?

I want a v4 sportbike bad, I have been waiting on Honda to release one for 10 years... they FINALLY did, but the $180,000+ Honda RC213V-S was just SLIGHTLY out of reach for me. As for the RSV4, I find myself in a conudrum of wondering what I'd do with another bike. I have four bikes now (K1200RS sporttouring, VFR sporttouring, GSXR750 track and CFR450X dirt). While I long for an RSV4, with my kids being the ages they are (16,13, and 9) it's busy as heck around here and I barely have time to ride the bikes that I already own.

I really enjoy each of the bikes that I have now for differing reasons, but I simply seek something new and different to try. After buying the GSXR it was quickly apparent that I am not mature enough to ride a "crotch rocket" on the street. It is like having a scalpel where all you really need is a butterknife and begs for you to be stupid. Unfortunately, I found that I tend to give in to that inner voice, the devil'y guy on my right shoulder saying "DO IT!"

The thought of selling something to make room has crossed my mind, but what? The RS is staying b/c it is hands down my favorite of what I have around for long distance (multiple 600+ mile days). The GSXR has been properly "broken in", "broken" being a key word and would not fetch enough money to have me care to part with it. The VFR, contrary to popular belief, is in an awesome bike and sits squarely between the RS and the GSXR. In my heart I know that this would be the bike that made the most sense to let go in my situation given I'm really only doing track day and longer trips these days, but I really don't care to sell it (again the upside in money gained by doing so isn't enough to bother) PLUS, here again it's a V4... why the hell would I sell it?

The above in mind, I have a hard time plonking down $15k for what would amount to a second dedicated track bike, and a fifth bike in the garage. Oh the problems that we face in our lives.

The RR is a great bike and one I'd consider, but I'm tickled by the V4. I passed on a really good deal recently for the Aprilia and I can't stop thinking about it. I also really like the ZX10r as well and can find them fairly cheap. I'm in a holding pattern for sure.

I get HARD pretty often, but I don't know that I've ever been referred to as a HARD MAN

I don't know if you are talking about repackaging my tale here on i-bmw or elsewhere. My preference would be for you to link to the article here, but it is the internet afterall so do with it what you must and I'll probably get over it.

Funny that you read and responded to this today. I just reread this tale earlier today refreshing my mind of the experience as I'm leaning to doing another (now ten years later) which I expect to be much easier returning from AHR. It's about 1100 miles for me from Jasper to home and I'm thinking that I'll do it all on the return trip on Sunday. Now I just need my boss to actually approve my vacation request.

Re: Best K Bike Ever?

Hard Man is a high compliment, most men will never be able to reach that pain threshold! No nothing like the Little Marco comment about Trump's hands.

I was going to repost it here on this forum.

Will you redo the ride Iron Butte style?

I have insomnia and when camping of the Blue Ridge and Skyline I would wake up at 3 am so I would leave instead of hanging out for 1st light, the DEER were everywhere, that is a long but very dangerous ride! I was riding back from Asheville last Friday, was having a beer at one our cool moto/beer venues Moto Vicious and left late took the Parkway it was dark and getting foggy, did not see any Bambi's!

I have Piaa's but doesn't help that much, I can't see well at night, you must have very good vision?

Oh love your license plate too! You would hate to have that tag and have a slow bike!

Re: Best K Bike Ever?

Years before getting my K1300S, my wife and I test rode a K1200RS. It was the only bike we'd ever been on where I couldn't even tell I had a passenger. The geometry was perfect for effortless steering and our postures were perfect for her tracking my body movements. Sometime I'd like to connect with a K1200RS rider and swap bikes for a couple hundred miles so I could see whether my recollection is correct and whether I should sell the K13S.
