Thumbs up Do You Wave at Scooters?

We live in an area with thousands of motorcycles and almost just as many scooters. Asheville is a college town and lots of students ride them as they are cheap.. Also.. around here if you get a speeding ticket over 15mph over the limit.. they take your license.. Hence we have a lot of alcoholics and or repeat law breakers resorting to scooters as their only means of transportation.. FYI.. You need no license here in NC to ride/operate a scooter...

Here's the thing... I wave at virtually every motorcyclist I pass.. Doesn't matter what brand (no matter how inferior.. ) and I don't care if they wave back or not but... I can NOT bring myself to wave at a scooter.. IMHO.. it's no more a motorcycle than a Buick.. It's just NOT a motorcycle..

Is it just me?? I wonder... hence this poll.. What say ye? Am I discriminating?

Re: Do You Wave at Scooters?

Discrimiatorrrrrr !!!!!
Motor , two wheels , MOTOR CYCLE .
You don't want to wave... Fine , don't !
But they are motocyclist too .

I just went over to www.scootorgeek.com and they have a similar question posted over there . They are generally much nicer to folk like YOU that choose not to wave . They get your address and send boxes of cookies to your home .

Hope you have a good dentist .....

Re: Do You Wave at Scooters?

Generally haven't seen scooter riders initiate a wave either. But I'm too lazy to figure out if they're a scooter or a motorcycle, so I wave anyway. Even wave at cops before I realize they're cops. Most of them wave back...

Line got blurry one evening when I was motorin' on the freeway at 78.7 MPH (80 is pretty much guaranteed to cause red lights in the mirror) when the single headlight I saw behind me was gradually getting larger in the mirror. I get one lane over, and Mr. Bergman scoots on by at almost 90 (had to find out...). Calm, sedate, and steady...

Re: Do You Wave at Scooters?

With the traffic around here, if they have the stones to ride something with no power, no safety features, etc... their stones are superior to mine. Who am I to judge them as I sit on my 1200 that can out accelerate and maneuver the majority of cars out there, and stop on a dime all the while I am sitting with the comfort of a heated vest, heated grips, and XM radio playing through the autocom.

Hell yea, I give them credit... no power, no respect, no comfort, no speed (which means that they spend twice as much time getting there as I do).

Wife's scooter will do 80, out handle and brake most Harley's. Yeah I would wave and most wave at me when I'm on the scooter. Many more wave at my wife, hell some even wave at her in the car.

Yeah, I wave at the scooters. The little fellas just seem kind of pitiful, though I'm sure they're having fun. I give thumbs up and waves to all kinds of folks, classic cars, mopeds, ultralights, whatever's unique.

Re: Do You Wave at Scooters?

I usually don't wave at scooters... kind of like FN a fat chick - they are real fun, but you don't want your friends to know!

When I do wave at scooters, its by mistake since I have more important things to worry about on the road (like the crazy soccer mom that is trying to make into her new hood decal).

Mark,

My sentiments exactly! Some of the scooters, when their riders are wearing ATG, appear to be a motorcycle when you glance at them and I will start the wave...If they wave back I will complete it, if not, I pull back quickly and hope nobody noticed!

Re: Do You Wave at Scooters?

I rode a Honda Metro a couple months ago and once I realized the tires were flat and put air in them, it was a lot of fun. Its kinda like a day off from riding while still riding. Give it a try, but be sure you put your full Rally 2 Pro suit on including boots and gloves. There are statements to be made by careful riders like us you know.

Re: Do You Wave at Scooters?

Wave to those S.O.B.'s??? N-e-v-e-r!

As we're a tourist mecca, down in the South Miami area (especially in South Beach-) about half the scooter riders are comprised of inexperienced, moronic, poorly skilled, drunk, college fraternity teens and tourists. They're usually in 'packs' of 5-9 scooters and buzz around, scattered as they weave, wobble, pollute and dart across all lanes yelling and screaming to each other as they disrupt the flow of traffic and present a very serious crash hazzard to motorcyclists (and cars). They don't know to signal or check their mirrors when they all decide to abruptly cut across the whole road and make an ill-executed mass U-turn. They're very dangerous down here in metropolitan traffic.

I want to 'Mad Max' all of 'em, but then along comes the occasional beautiful seniorita' on her Vespa... tanned, wavy hair flowing in the breeze... and all is right in the world again...

I wanna ride there! After all, Virginia Beach is not called the "redneck revierra" for nothing. Yes I know I spelled it wrong, it's late.

As I live in town, we have a couple of regular riders... pure Balls! I have lived from S Korea, to Italy, to several months in Albania... lived in eight states and have NEVER seen drivers as bad as in Virginia (at least this area)! I am telling you, the scooter riders don't have stones, they have boulders (or are just plain stupid)!

We waved at a scooter last Tuesday evening. At least, we think it was a scooter. Kinda busy at the time, and it was dark, and they were slow, and these really GREAT curves were coming up, and a car was approaching, and .... it sorta looked like a scooter.

The curves were cool.

I can't seem to get myself to wave to the "scootees". They also don't seem to know how to deal with motorcyclists - seems like they get pretty intimidated.

Bigger question for me is who waves to Goldwing riders? These guys are at the bottom of the food chain - the nerds of the road!

Yes. Here, they seem not to understand the concept of waving to others. Actually, there are other things they don't seem to understand either. It is common to see a scooter riding right down the grease strip in the middle of the lane, in a pouring rainstorm.

I wave to scoots and most wave back kinda surprised.
Speaking of Goldwings, ever notice that the guy is usually skinny and the gal isn't where as with the Harleys it's the opposite.

Re: Do You Wave at Scooters?

damn that must have been great, never had anything like that happen although most of them do wave back to me.
one time I was cruising (I thought) Had just gone from an airhead to an oilhead R1100RS and was decieved by my speed. (really) I thought I was going about the speed limit (think it was a 50 zone) saw a bike coming the other way, it was a motor cop and since I knew I was going the speed limit I didnt even look down to check.
I waved to him like I do for all bikes and then was surprised to see him flip around on me.
He came and pulled me over and told me I was over the speed limit. He thought it was real funny that I had actually waved at him while speeding, he gave me a warning and let me go in my embarrassment.
who knows maybe if I hadnt waved at him I would have gotten a ticket.

Karl, you are in the wrong profession - you need to be a politician because you get out of so much shit with the cops!!! And... thank you for doing so!

Re: Do You Wave at Scooters?

I try to wave at anyone on two wheels;scooters, cops and even harleys and GWs[and some SUVs just to let them know that they missed].

Most of the time I don't even look over to see if the wave is returned, don't want to take my attention away from traffic, but the wave is automatic if i see them coming.

I especially wave at cops on bikes and most of them wave back. [have been waved back at twice in town by police bikes with hand held radar, after clocking me over the speed limit].

Re: Do You Wave at Scooters?

Wave sure do, .... the following get a friendly wave....
1) Cops especially when I am going too fast.
2) Unusual vehicles, Model T Ford for example.
3) Courtious cage drivers who allow me to easily merge.
4) Professional drivers (truckers) who kindly wait in the right lane following a truck they obviously want to pass, for me to catch up and pass both of them in one clip. Rather then taking the long 2 minute pass them selves while blocking the left lane and my view of the road ahead and spewing disel fumes upon me.... They are the best!!! Professional drivers routinely use the rearview and usually are courtious. .

5) Anyone who happens to be on a lonely road just like me.
Good Karma.

Not so sure bout the last sentence there... Most are effin' twits! (not to say azzh....)
One of'em even sent me off I-77 in 2001... Totalled the K and sent me home with everything associated with a 65mph tumble. Broken ribs, contusions, etc...
Thank God for gear...
Don't trust any of'em since...
As for the first sentence, if you've ever been on 81... None of them wait for you to catch up. They always move over just as you're fast approaching...

Hell, I pi#% on all semis!

Re: Do You Wave at Scooters?

Hey real sorry Louis about your experience sounds horrible.
Last summer I went Coast to Coast on the 1150RT, Solo and was most impressed with the professional truckers. They all seemed to wait for me to pass. Hey these guys talk on the radio all day.... as they drive, I give one a sincere wave and who knows perhaps its mentioned.
The message here is "a little (good will) goes a long way."

Re: Do You Wave at Scooters?

When I had my HD, a guy on a scooter gave me the wave, and I started laughing so hard I thought I was going to fall off.
Now, the vast majority of HD riders don't wave, and that feels just fine

Re: Do You Wave at Scooters?

Right or wrong, I fall into the camp of not waving to scooters but another observation is that area, when I have passed on and not waved, I can't think of one time where they initiated the wave. I can't say this for Harleys, Goldwings, or any other type of rider on the road, all of whom I will wave to if I can.

Re: Do You Wave at Scooters?

Here in Vancouver, at least, it seems that scooter riderrs are too stunned to figure out why you are waving at them. I used to wave at scooters, but since they almost never wave back, I just gave up. Might as well wave at a rock, for all the good it does.

Even when I pull up beside one at an intersection, they inevitably just stare straight ahead, and don't acknowledge my presence beside them. Maybe since many of them are riding little 50cc scooters that won't get out of their own way, they feel a little self conscious next to a big bike?

Re: Do You Wave at Scooters?

Not only will I wave a scooters (whose riders have NO idea why I'm waving ), but now.. I have joined the scooter madness with a tiny little 1985 Yamaha my dearest just finished rebuilding by taking parts of two scooters along with on-the-spot fabricated parts to make one hell of a grin-inducing machine. I laughed the whole 1.5 miles around the neighborhood loop on this BEAST!!

Let the late night, beer-addled scooter racing begin!!

If I didn't have 3 miles or so to go on the highway to get anywhere from home, I think I'd have a scooter. I think my feelings would be hurt if none of you waved.

Re: Do You Wave at Scooters?

I wave to everyone, bicycles, ATVs, you name it with one exception Harleys. In Maine most HD owners are pinheads and won't wave to anyone other than HD riders.
I’m sure that in many parts of the world this may not be the case but in Maine HD is the bike of choice for the great unwashed.
