Re: Do You Wave at Scooters?

I'm with the guys and gals who wave at everything on two wheels. What I want to know is, what make a person on a motorcycle not want to wave to another motorcyclist on a sunny summer day? In particular when that motorcyclist has just waved at you. I take particular pleasure in waving at the hard core Harley dudes cause you know they just won't wave. I thought of adopting an extremly gay wave or throwing kisses at them. Anyway I'm waving at you no matter what you ride and when I'm on my Vespa I wave at all the bikes

Re: Do You Wave at Scooters?

I wave if they look like they are riding the scooter for a good reason. Like if they are on burgmans riding in the country or a college kid around campus. If they have an old milk crate with a bicycle helmet then no.

I’m sure that in many parts of the world this may not be the case but in Maine HD is the bike of choice for the great unwashed.

Most HD riders wave here in WI. Some don't. Don't notice much of a difference from other riders except in their apparel.

As it turns out, I did just that last week! The woman riding it reacted as if I just told her she looked like a super model.... There was this surprised look on her face, then a big smile, and "Thanks!!!".

Usually, when I talk to scooter riders, it is at an intersection in the rain, and I am forever telling them that they will live a lot longer if they stop riding down the center of their lane in the "grease strip". Scooter riders are especially dense about this, and it is humerous to watch the light turn on when I mention this.

There is the old biker joke that goes " Scooters are like fat girls, they are fun to ride as long as your friends don't see you. There is a lot of truth to that statment.

Re: Do You Wave at Scooters?

Ooh.. A wave thread thats like 2 years old. I like!

My $.02 - I wave to everybody - as long as they have a helmet on. If they're riding without a helmet, they're not my friend.

Re: Do You Wave at Scooters?

We're in for a snow/sleet storm tonight, so even a 2 year old thread on scooter waving is worthwhile.

Me, I wave. But after doing it on a trip around the Great Lakes a couple years ago, I got hit with the following poem on the bike-to-bike radio:
"He looks at the hooters of girls who ride scooters".
But I still do it anyway.

Honestly I'm sick of waving to anyone. Enough already! /That being said, it seems like the attitude of the scooter rider is " why are they waving at me?".

Re: Do You Wave at Scooters?

Here in N.C., a lot of the scooter riders do so for reasons of necessitiy as a result of loss of driving priveleges. They are frequently referred to as 'Licquor Cycles.' I imagine a lot of them don't wave because they may infer the wave as a sign of derision rather than one of kinship. I wave anyway...they're still my two wheeled Bros.

As for HD, I wave but don't look to see if they wave back--they usually don't. I can't help it if they feel superior/smug in the rapture of their 60 year old DinoCycles. I even stop for them when they break down and compliment them at the pump on those occasions when we meet at the feeding trough. I don't sincerely mean it but, it's nice to make someone's day when they hear what they already believe. (I'm usually laughing up my sleeve but, a full-face helment can make for a great poker face).

I don't understand Woody - all the scooters I've seen around here have license plates on them, hence one must have a license to ride them. Is that not the case in your area?

As for Harleys, I always wave to them and for the most part, they wave back. Nearly every time I've been stopped on the side of the road (thankfully, never for bike problems) it has been the HD riders who have stopped to check on me (BMW riders being more scarce). Some of those bikes are simply gorgeous to look at - even though not at all my style to ride.

Scooter riders around here are totally clueless about waving, hence they don't return a wave...., so screw 'em, let them eat cake.....

Re: Do You Wave at Scooters?

As Jerry said at the top of the thread, in N.C. not only is a license not needed to operate a scooter under a certain displacement, it is the only means of transportation open to offenders who lose their Operator's Permit and need to transport themselves legally without resorting to taxis, rides with friends or walking.

Re: Do You Wave at Scooters?

I wave at all two wheelers, why be a putz and think ill of what someone rides. They bought what they like and that is all that matters. My wife has a scooter and I have a scooter as well as my KGT and I like them both for different reasons. My dad has a Harley and he's not a jerk about what people ride, his friend has a Harley and a 1975 R75. So I wave and if they don't wave back because of what I ride then oh well(I'll turn around and hunt them down and ki... oh wait, positive things). We all ride and love it and that is what's important.

Re: Do You Wave at Scooters?

I do know that these bark busters or grip shields or whatever you call them are wrecking my subtle wave approach while riding the GS. All that effort and then to realize that nobody sees it behind the plastic. Time for a new plan.

It's bad enough to wave at a scooter. What's worse is to see them riding in Rolling Thunder.........

When I do wave at scooters, its by mistake since I have more important things to worry about on the road (like the crazy soccer mom that is trying to make into her new hood decal).

I used to wave at all two wheeled traffic. Now that I work on a resort island that rents scooters, I try to run them off the road every chance I get. Tourista's on scooters suck.

Edited to add: I posted this for Charlie.

ok, so, is this wave-worthy?

and what is it anyway - the replacement for the LT? or is it the new 0.5 series car?
Saw this in Paris this past weekend; the place was lousy with them.

I do, especially if they're on a BMW R1200RTP. I just don't expect to get a wave back from a motor cop, no matter what they're riding. I get a wave back from motor cops about half the time, though.

that would be the C-1 pretty pop over in europe (from what I have read) and there are even a few (very few) here in the states the only scooter (at least when it was first released) that was legal to be ridden helmetless due to roll cage (if memory serves)

Re: Do You Wave at Scooters?

Since I own a Yamaha Zuma scooter and use it often, I wave back.

Re: Do You Wave at Scooters?

I've waved many times no shame here. On a couple of occasions I've pulled up to scoot at a stop light lifted my visor and started a conversation where I get the occasional stare that says "ah do you know I'm on a scooter?"
One time I passed a scooter on the interstate (I'm talking about a K12rs here folks) and I found my self behind him at a stop light a few miles off the interstate . I said to myself what the f*uck when I saw him.

Never get too cocky

Re: Do You Wave at Scooters?

Weary of paying $125 to fill up my Ford F-150, I bought a Yamaha Zumo 50cc scooter for the 4 mile commute to work... I think I put $4.00 worth of gas in it about a week ago... anyway, I was riding it today and some bad-ass looking dude on a Harley wearing a Nazi helmet waved at me...

Re: Do You Wave at Scooters?

The other day as I was leaving the gym I saw a guy with the best of both worlds and apparently no friends.

He was on a scooter and had a Big Girl on the back and of course on helmets, jackets etc.

I wouldn't mind having one of those Vino 125s. Neat-looking little ride.

If I were doing it again, that's what I would buy. I actually bought the Zumo just to get around the jobsites that I manage, but decided to ride it to work and back a couple of days a week. I already put an expansion chamber on it... next is the 70cc kit...

I used to take #2 as a choice any day, but never crashed by my own, now with so much ahead of me ( no work, lots of free time, grand children, etc, etc, etc. ) will enjoy someone like you riding ahead of me!

Cheers bud

I mostly see scooters in the city, where dodging traffic often takes priority over waving. When I see 'em on the backroads or freeways they definitely get a wave.
