Valencia Testing - 1st for 2017 Bikes

Vinales topped the charts on both days and on day 2 was the only rider to go under 1:30, Rossi was 2nd on day 1, and wound up 7th on day two. Rossi was one of several crashers, without injury. Lots of back to back testing on the '16 bikes, and the '17 bikes. Lorenzo on a blacked out Ducati was 10th on day one, and 9th on day two, but Yamaha said no more testing this year for you Jorge, as he's still under Yamaha contract to the end of the year, but they did allow this test. Crutchlow apparently has a full factory 2017 Honda at his disposal, but may lack the technical development that MM and Pedrosa will receive on the factory bikes. If I had to guess I'd say this will be Pedrosa's last season.

Honda is trying a "big bang" engine for 2017 and I suppose all the teams will be chasing Ducati in the horsepower wars. Too bad racing is over until the end of March.

2nd day times.

Re: Valencia Testing - 1st for 2017 Bikes

Vinales made quite a jump on that second day. Rossi has to be wondering WTF right about now.

Ducati's new GP17 didn't make as much of an improvement over the GP16. Reckon they'll be doing a lot more adjusting with Lorenzo in the seat to get that sorted out.

Honda's new Big Bang firing order has that bike sounding very angry now! It'll be interesting to see if that pays off for them although with Marquez riding it they could pretty much give him anything and he'll still be running at the top...

The Honda satellite riders made a big jump up the time sheets too with that new frame.

Aprilla has a rider in the top ten.

Iannone seems really like the new seat at Suzuki as well.

KTM showed up in a big way. It'll be interesting to see how they progress through the season.

It could be a very interesting 2017 season.

Re: Valencia Testing - 1st for 2017 Bikes

I thought there was to be some restrictions/uniformity to the aero winglets? If I'm seeing this correctly, there are even more on the Ducati than with the 16...

The regs say no winglets on the '17 bikes, the teams have been riding the '16 bikes, and the '17 bikes.

Lorenzo had to ride a blacked out bike due to contract and sponsorship issues.

Here's Pedrosa on the '16 bike with no wings, with the exception of Lorenzo, and Vinales for that matter (still under Suzuki contract) who have to ride blacked out '16 bikes, the '17 bikes are still in black

Rossi on the '17 Yamaha

Looks like the bike Lorenzo's riding has 3 per side. I thought the 16 had 2???

Here's another view - Ducati were the first with wings, and maybe had the most dramatic, top wing might give the appearance of 3, but its still the '16 bike, they'll be naked without their wings in '17

That is some convaluted top wing on the Ducati. Since it wouldn't turn until they started messing with wings...wonder if it'll be back to the old problems without them?

I bought the late season MotoGP Video Pass, and I am so pleased with it that I am going to buy the whole season for 2017!

Looks like he's feathering the clutch.

Re: Valencia Testing - 1st for 2017 Bikes

One of the "go-faster" riding techniques I've seen is actually to have you let go of the outside hand.

Beginners (and not so beginners like myself) tend to fight themselves when steering the bike with both hands, and end up running wide by not countersteering enough to initiate the lean.

Steering with primarily with the inside hand/arm makes a big difference for some riders.

Too bad it's getting cold out there, I'd like to go out and practice some more...

I am glad to hear Ducati no wings in 2017. Quite frankly I think the bikes look dumb with them. But for Ducati I thought it natural. Like Enzo Ferrari said, "Aerodynamics are for people who can't build engines." Mr Ducati designer must've thought the same thing, lol, when they came out with it. They couldn't turn worth a damn. Needed help cause they couldn't design a bike.

None the less, I am excited to see Lorenzo on Ducati. Viñales with Valentino. Not so much Marquez. He's a great rider, be sure of that. KTM I am interested in and Dovi on Suzuki.

Doug check this out.

http://www.crash.net/motogp/news/235...er-reason.html

ALL of the manufacturers are going to have problems now without the wings it looks like. Some very interesting stuff in that link.

Seems they all were seeing measurable benefits with wings vs no wing configurations.

There may be some very interesting looking fairing next year!

Re: Valencia Testing - 1st for 2017 Bikes

Thanks Don. No doubt the wings help...even if they are ugly. Just seems that Ducati had the greatest challenge without them. But like in F1, now that MotoGp understands the importance of aero, they'll all figure it out .
