Question DVD player issue...

Just got an old box set of a TV series.

Most of the discs will play the first episode or two but not the last two of three.

Time to clean the DVD lenses?

Re: DVD player issue...

Might want to try and clean the discs themselves with a little warm soapy water and a lint free soft cloth.

Washed with Dawn Ultra X 2, Microfiber cloth, and water.

It helped with one disc, but not the others.

In all there are about 45 DVD discs in the set.

The problem appears in all 3 of the DVD players we have, but to variable degrees.

These are commercially recorded discs produce by HBO.

Even so, could it be "disc rot"?

Will try a commercial DVD player cleaning disc next.

Re: DVD player issue...

An old trick when the audio on my older discs would skip... apply paste wax to the surface, worked well, though probably not your problem.

That's a lot of discs. I would hate to see them unusable.

Re: DVD player issue...

All the more reason to rip the CD's to MP4. I use DVDfab, but there are many ways to do this:

Re: DVD player issue...

Data corruption?

DVD cleaning, waxing, and DVD-player-cleaning disc all tried without success.

Interestingly, some episodes will play, while others will not on the same disc.

Did you try a ripping software? on a good dvd rom drive in a pc?

will the ones that do play do so completely and the others not at all is so the IFO files may be buggere up. A ripper should just see the data and pull the media from the vob files

We have not yet but will give it a try.

Some discs just get rejected while some others will play the first several episodes but not the latter ones.

You are light years ahead of us on this stuff.

Thanks for your input!

Yes .. trying ripping them to your PC. I use MakeMKV allows you to select the desired video, subtitles, audio tracks. www.makemkv.com

Re: DVD player issue...

Like I said, get DVDfab, it's free for 30 days so you can try it out. Personally, I have a lifetime subscription to it and around 2500 DVD's digitized. I only use .MKV for Bluray's, .MP4 is fine for DVD's:

https://www.dvdfab.cn/

Do you have production DVD's or copies someone made, should be able to tell by looking at the side opposite the label? If someone made them then trying differnt CPU's to rip them might work since each DVD writer drive is aligned slightly differently. What you need to do in that situation is find a drive that matches as close as possible.
