Re: Steering

Had to think about if for a bit, as steering the MC comes pretty naturally after 40 years or so, but when I do think about it I'm a pusher, mostly, but don't tell the DEA .

Re: Steering

I used to focus towards "push". I use my body more & less arms now: Drive a shoulder in/forward with a slight cheek sneak to the inside on really tight long or tight turns. The body shift does both push/pull but with a very light touch on the bars.
There are two ways to move your upper body:
  • With your arms (which disturbs the bike)
  • With your legs/torso. Pushing off the outside peg keeping the bars light.
I passed through my college town last week on the way to a track day orientation & reminisced about a funk band at what was Woody's Bar & Grill. They had a lyric that I'll modify for the topic. "Free you mind and ass will follow" (a call for the audience to dance...)
Applied here would be "Free your ass & shoulders & your bike will follow"

Re: Steering

100% pusher. Although using my iPad with my fat fingers means I voted puller by mistake!

Re: Steering

This is interesting to me. I had never ridden a MC before I took the basic rider course. Many miles and years on bicycles, though. They taught counter steering and it seemed very unnatural to me. I guess I just steered with my body. On the drill where you head at the instructor and he points left or right and you have to get around him, he was getting mad at me because he wanted to see the push to initiate the turn and I wasn't doing it. Now, 10+ years later, I find myself purposely pushing occasionally - odd.

Guessed being the operative word. Whether you like it or not turning is initiated by counter steering.

And btw I'm a pusher.

Re: Steering

For general riding I am a push pull rider. If caught in a decreasing radius turn by surprise, I push plenty to hold her down. Push harder, lean harder.
