Upgrades/farkles made to my K1300s

Bought the bike i august -17, but before winter storage i managed to make some improvments and to it. and also get it more personal.

Smoked indicator lenses in front with led bulbs, much more visible.

Rear indicators replaced with new LED units, they are half the size but 100 times more visible.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pQBvsbIbxKg

Legere/wunderlich number plate mount. replaces the whole plastic in the back/underside of the bike, much better looking. And now i can access the lock for the seat with one hand AND turn the key.
https://www.wunderlich.de/shop/en/le...980-000-1.html

Grip puppies, not yet installed, delivery took to long and i had to put the bike in storage.

Tomtom rider 40, not yet installed for the same reason as previous.

Small bag for the luggage rack, good for daytrips where only some water and small things are needed, can be seen in the video of my indicators .https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Tail-Bag-...item41d4a03692

USB outlet, not yet installed but will be connected with the gps powerfeed from the gps outlet under the batterycover.

Sidestand enlarger, not yet installed, bought a chinese one and will see how it fits and if it works, otherwise i make my own.

AC Schnitzer adjustable brake and clutch levers.

When the bike comes home in spring i will make LED lights behind the roundels and connect to the parkinglamp so it becomes more visible from the side, good when standing in intersections at night.
Made my own for my old f800 and it made a big difference in visiblity at night from the side.
Making them myself again saves some money and it is not that hard to do.

Probably will get a hugger and a center stand as well.

Re: Upgrades/farkles made to my K1300s

It's a sickness we all have. The bike is just the beginning. I just bought a little 250 Honda for $5,500 US dollars and have spent $2,000 on Upgrades/farkles. It's fun. You sound like you're ready to farkle as soon as it gets warm. Love the Lava color.

We are going to need some pictures please.

Re: Upgrades/farkles made to my K1300s

I am like this with all my toys , fixing and fine tuning my bike, cars, rifles. Can't leave things as they are if i find there is room for improvement.

But it is fun ....

Pics will have to wait, do not have unrestricted access to the where it is stored during winter, rented a slot at the local bikeclub as a friend of mine is a member, but i can only get in if he is with me.

Re: Upgrades/farkles made to my K1300s

The USS Enterprise is finally home!!

No time for a big trip today, only logged 11km, a few times aroung town and then the gasstation before heading home.

First thing was mounting the Gps and connecting it. Tomorrow i hope to find time to reinstall the pannier rack but need to readjust the brackets for the turnsignals for the rack to fit.
An SW motech luggagerack is going on instead of the original so that i can put on the Givi v46 when needed.

Then the biggest headache: getting the grip puppies on.....that one will most likely include a lot of swearing i think.

Now for a question, best place to tap in a usb outlet so that is switched?
Dont want it draining the battery as it is a dc-dc converter.

it wont drain the battery, hook it up to the battery with a 10amp fuse. Then you can use it for a compressor when you get a flat.

This is a piece of cake. Trim the grip puppy to correct length. Remove the bar end. Get some hairspray. Spray the inside of the grip puppy and the grip with the hair spray. Immediately slide the grip puppy over the grip. Reinstall the bar end. Let dry overnight. The hairspray acts as a lubricant then as a mild adhesive upon drying. Tah-dah. Just have some paper towels handy because it can get a bit messy.

I had no issues with fitting grip puppies. Use a bit of soapy water and fold back the leading edge to push right on.

Have improved my grip a lot!

Still need my carpal tunnels done at some stage methinks.....

The converter i have says max 3A/15W. It's a CPT one.

I was thinking the same thing. Maybe a lighter socket with a USB adapter? More flexibility on the load. Check out Powerlet.

Oh, i have one of those on the bike already. I want a clean install of a usb outlet only to be able to quickly connect my phone.

I have one of these converters on hand, got it when i bought a used Gps.

Here is the best thing you can add to your collection, a heated jacket liner:

This one is worth the trouble to get a hold of.

Re: Upgrades/farkles made to my K1300s

The grip puppies went on just as easy as said. Don't think i have to put any money in the cup.

Also got the sw moteck luggagerack fitted, was surprised as it actually looks nicer than the OEM rack.
It's smaller and more in line with the bike, except for it's gloss paint that is.

Went for a short ride (50km) this evening just to test that the quickshift still works, it does.....but i thought better test and be safe than not to and be sorry

Few things are more fun than the quickshift, most i can think of requires female presence.....

A Saab, yes a freakin Saab, tried to race me....i just stayed cool behind him in 4th and when the road opened up to give clear line of sight i twisted my hand and when i was right beside him i put it in 5th (god i wish i had an acra at that moment) and left him in the dust...whats wrong with saab-owners? of course he was gonna loose...what did he think?

Re: Upgrades/farkles made to my K1300s

The Motorrad Nav IV, V, and VI plug directly into the cycles harness to a wire found under the battery cover. Not sure on other units. I have used the mount sold by Pirate's on two cycles. I have the Wunderlich steering bridge on one cycle and use the ram ball and arm on it because the mount location is blocked by the handle bars. both work well.

The Throttlemeister will work with the grip puppies, The puppies do not overlap the end of the grip if trimmed to correct length.

Thanks for your response. I know BMW Navy units plug right in but they seem expensive compared to Garmin or Tom Tom. Also I was concerned about the mount because I thought it might block gauges.

No pics, but it is this mount. It is mounted in front of the gascap.

Took power from the original outlet for Bmw nav, used this cable to connect, no 6 in the list.

Re: Upgrades/farkles made to my K1300s

Have got everything except for the usb outlet mounted.
Boght a second hand sw motech luggage rack and a Givi v46 a few weeks ago and that is fitted as well after giving the trim on the givi a respray. Today i also fitted an addon in the form of a led brake light kit for the topbox, got it slightly modified and fitted today.
Made quick connectors at the bikes side of the harness so that the adapter plate for the v46 also can be removed when the box is not in use.

Also refitted the side case rack and ran i to trouble, my led indicators needed to be moved ouwards to fit the rack, now they hit the cases. So got to buy some aluminum sheet and make new brackets and ship off to be anodized.

Re: Upgrades/farkles made to my K1300s

Now everything is sorted out and working of the previously listed job's.

Now on to the next, light upgrade. During summer Sweden is a pretty birght country, at least up until midsummer, from there it's downhill when it comes to daylight. The last 2-3 months it get's dark fast in the evenings.

So to upgrade both for usable light at night and increase my visibility during day the following will be done.

Dipped and full beams will get H7 LED bulb's.
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Phil...873862328.html

On each side of the fork i will put one of these.
https://www.diodhuset.se/dualeye-s-f...6000k-8-grader

Will be connected through a relay and a switch up at the handlebars conncted to run with the dipped beam.

Under the oilradiator i will fit one of these.
https://www.diodhuset.se/slim-led-ex...30v-3-led-ip67

Will also have a relay and switch on the handlebars and will run with the full beam only.

So activating both swithces on the handlebar and fullbeam will give 125w of led light.

Re: Upgrades/farkles made to my K1300s

Test fitted the lights. Hooked them up to a 12v 1,5A constant current driver. ( dont know the english word for it)
So they are not as bright as they will be with the correct current feeding them.

Holy crap these things are bright, like looking in a welding torch. Gave shadows on the tree's in the background despite it being daylight outside.

Need some help on hooking them up to the bike, my plan with relays and stuff is out due to there brightness.

Now i'm thinking the 15w 3led center one should still be only on full beam.

But the 2pcs 10w one's need's to be at 6v with the dipped beam and 12v on full beam, also should be switches so that i can choose to turn off one or the other no matter if dipped or full beam.

How do i achieve this?

The 2 small ones draw 1,3A @12v.
The 2 small one's draw 0,4A @6v.
The big draw's 1A @12v.
Together the lights draw 2,38A @12v.

Some pics of the first mock-up, what do you think of the look's and position ?

I would be wary of the pod under the nose hitting the frint fender when going over bumps. I had a lower profile bar in similar position on mine, and it hit the fender cracking it.

Have 8cm to spare as it fits in the recess on the fender. But will get more as i need to make my own bracket to make it center. Will make that bracket lower wich will move the light up.

Re: Upgrades/farkles made to my K1300s

SimonUK is right... if it's mounted too low the light will hit the fender...

FYI.. I've had a PIAA on mine for a few years now.. It has made contact with the fender a hand full of times when I hit unexpected speed bumps or small children.. I made my own bracket and modified it a few times for the best clearance. As long as I pay attention.. not a problem now..

My question to you is... why? With the current lights you have installed, your bike can probably be seen from Neptune..

Re: Upgrades/farkles made to my K1300s

Oh. No it is my plan to fit these 3 lights. The 2 on the forks are to run at 6v together with low beams as DRL's for extra visibility during daytime, when full beam is on they will get 12v and run full power and then the light mounted in front of the oilcooler will also run full power. This will give good illumination of the roads at night/dark.

Re: Upgrades/farkles made to my K1300s

Well, looked in to this with dual power, found the skene light controller. But price with shipping, handling and import taxes would be 135USD. Then the rest add's on top of that, so that route would be around 150USD total for a wiring system.

So i will be building my own system for just shy of 35USD. That includes everything like converter, wires, connectors and all the other bits and pieces.

The converter had to be 7,5v instead of 6v as the diode lower the forward voltage with 1,2v. So the Drl's will get 6,3v and draw 0.4A and give 2,52W during normal use, when high beam is on it will get full blast of 14v and draw 1.28A and give 17,92W.

A ugly wiring made in paint to show my idea.

Not a bad idea, could give a few bucks in....

No, just giving myself a better chance of spotting wildlife before they are in front of the bike and possibly making the cager's notice the bike coming into intersections.

The light in front of the oil rad is not mounted, but last night i wished i had it.

So that is is next, but do you think it will impair the cooling of the oil?

Here's my thread on adding a Philips 8-LED DRL, mounted in front of the lower edge of the Engine Oil Cooler. It draws only 7.7W and produces ~450 Lumens of light. It doesn't add much light but it is conspicuous! See entry #7 for pics.

http://www.i-bmw.com/showthread.php?t=58891

I mounted it ~17k miles ago. I've ridden in 111 F (44 C) heat and didn't note any indication of engine coolant overheating or difficult shifting of the transmission.

I think the main hazard is insuring it doesn't contact the front Fender when the front Suspension is fully compressed.

I guess my lamp is 3x as thick though. Have not mounted it yet, no opening in the calendar for some time.
It is there a a pure extra light, not for making myself visible but to add more light so i can see better.

Visibility is handled by the 2 led in the fork's and the low beam led. Need to order a set extra of H7 led for the full beam.

Re: Upgrades/farkles made to my K1300s

Spent the evening in the garage, working on my trailer as it failed the MOT. Got fed up with that after about 1 hour and instead took the bellypan off the bike to clean out some tar and rocks on the inside.

While taking it off i noticed that there was plenty of room to work on the rear suspension from the left side, so i fitted these plates. No testdrive as i did not have the torque numbers for the bolts on hand, will have to tighten them tomorrow.
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Heckhoher....c100005.m1851

Also a work for tomorrow is to fit the 3rd and last led lamp and test it out.

Re: Upgrades/farkles made to my K1300s

DAMN!!

These riser plates made a huuuuge difference, got on the bike and did not expect that much of them really.
First corner down the street made it clear that they did make a difference, it was like i had just shaved 50kg of its weight when it came to cornering, it felt just like the little nimble f800st i had previously.

Drove a few kilometers more only as the rain started pouring and i only had short's and a t shirt on.

this bike will be even more fun now!!

So to you that have not placed an order yet: Just do it!!!!

In May, I slid in a turn doing 20-30 mph. No big deal, right? Cycle slid under an guard rail and spit me off. $7,000 in plastic damage repairs and accessory replacement. Tore up a Motorrad Airflow jacket and scraped a Schuberth C3 helmet. I was wearing TCX boots which got gouged from the toe to the instep. It broke my Fibula near my ankle and severely sprained my ankle when it got hyper-extended, probably under the cycle. I am now shopping for better boots with more ankle protection, but fitment is a problem with a still swollen ankle and foot. Without boots, jacket and helmet, I would have left part of me on that road.

If one knew when one is going to wreck and how, it would be easy to decide when that short ride would require rider protection.

I apologize for the thread drift. Just a warning that bad things can happen at any time, and the outcome is a function of preparedness and quality of one's equipment. Good luck with your project.

In Asia people often wear little when riding, and I have seen some dreadful accidents.

I always kit up, even for a short run.

I was very thankful my son was fully kitted up when he was taken down last year 300m from home. He suffered a brain injury he is still recovering from, his two week old Panigale was written off, but no other injuries. His race jacket and helmet in particular tell the story of how much they saved him.

If he had been wearing a half face helmet, thatís all he would have now. Taken down by another biker popping out perpendicular to and from a line of stopped traffic.
