13 GT so many screws

Last summer in Norway I had a minor mishap at Hardanger in Norway. As the situation developed I ended up not reaching the ground with my feet and ofcource droped the top heavy bike standing still. Scratched the side bag, left fairing and also the upper fairing. Esthitic scrathes only and no other damage, but I still want it to be repaired.

This weekend I pulled it all and couldn't believe all screws and parts which had to be removed. To remove the upper fairing, left and right fairing, windscreen and covers behind it and also the dash board covers had to be removed.

My good friend, the car painter will now take care of it, so the bike will be in mint condition again, if I ever am able to re-assemble all the parts and screws of differnet lengh. I sorted out all the screws and put them in small marked boxes so hopefully I will get it right.

Well, during Christmas vacation I will have the answere.

I wish you all a merry Christmas.

Re: 13 GT so many screws

All those fasteners are to hold the plastic on while you are going down the road at 200KPH. Of course in Norway I don't think that is a good idea from what I have heard about the fines. Merry Christmas, beech (buena suerte)

That info would be brilliant, as need to clean all the winter crud off and give everything a wipe over with ACF 50 for the rest of the winter use . . . .and keep me busy over the Xmas break !

Re: 13 GT so many screws

NOTE - all screws are T-25, that is all you need.

NOTE 2 - I omitted removing the seats........

TOP SIDE - Battery Cover

Identified here:

And removed here - pullout the battery cover - note tongue and groove fitting near steering head

CLUTCH SIDE PLASTIC

Throttle Side Plastic

SIDE TANK PLASTIC - Clutch side

Even though this shows the throttle side you need to remove the same screw on the clutch side - lost the picture

Pull panel down

Throttle Side

Re: 13 GT so many screws

Part 2

Pull Panel Down

Removing the very top Tank Peice
Clutch side

Throttle side

Note tongue and groove configuration - pull up slow and evenly

If everthing worked you will end up with this:
Note - I will show you how to remove the very lower plastic next

Lower Plastic
Clutch side

12mm Length

Two on the very bottom 12mm also - note there is no tube in the hole on a 1300

Hanger CORRECTLY Installed (screw removed)

BELOW IS INCORRECTLY ASSEMBLED

ENGINE FOAM - you wont belive the PITA it was to figure replacement
Removed

Installed

Removed

Installed

That should about cover it - MOST IMPORTANT NOTE - if you are FORCING ANYTHING you are DOING IT WRONG - the bike easily assembles and dissembles.

Cheers

Re: 13 GT so many screws

Louis, Luis great tech info. even if Karlb is a tick ahead on posting - hope this is in correct order - but great winter-time advice for anyone contemplating a project that includes fairing removals.

Even managed to get the battery flap up and removed as a starter!! <g>

It's also nice (and eye-candy) seeing the sequence performed on the Red Metallic GT! <g> - have the same color!

Re: 13 GT so many screws

Miles - you got the order right.

Hope folks can find of use.

The MOA posting is much better presented - tried to bring it over and couldn't; I would defer to Karl's version for accuaracy and presentatrion, if you want to delete mine that is ok - like I said it was a hack job.

Off to the package store for some much needed libations!

Luis

Re: 13 GT so many screws

Thanks for posting. I've taken the sides off a few times and I'm sure have mixed up the screw lengths when refitting. Great reference post, now I know how to take off the rest of it too!

Really would like to have a look at that link Semper Fi posted but it doesn't work for me

Trond - this was a very important post - thanks for providing it.

Please note that we went back and checked the forum access for the DIY section on the MOA board and noticed that not all could view, this has been corrected so feel free to check it out, however we prefer not to cut and paste - thanks

Luis

Re: 13 GT so many screws

Semper FI - brilliant, thanks a bundle !!

Think having the 'red' bike makes it even easier to distinguish in the photos from my bronze colour scheme.. . . now to switch the heaters on in the garage and get to work !

Agree with Trond, this is a terrific site and community. Looking forward to sharing more and updating my intro.

The thought / dream of having all screws the same length.

Re: 13 GT so many screws

Not wanting to say the obvious because a lot of work has been done:

My KRS came with at least 3 lengths of screw. I replaced the lot with stainless steel hex button heads and now use a short rubber handled hex ball driver which copes with angles. I can get all the panels off in 5 minutes.

I now have mostly one length and a few longer where the screw holds 2 panels.

Have a look at what the screws are holding and I bet you can standardise to a longer screw, as long as the back is in clear space and not likely to touch anything like hoses.

Re: 13 GT so many screws

What i showed was the stock disassembly with the length of screws as noted.

What you do after to streamline is up to you

Don't worry, instead please send them to me . I lack one for the dash board cover right side mount . I noticed this allready during the disassemble. Got to be the manufacturer who missed it at the switch waranty visit . The second screw I will save as a spare .

Re: 13 GT so many screws

Anyone else want to use some blue Loctite on those stainless screws? My K1300 is 8 yrs old and some have never been out. Only a few fasteners have been what I consider 'loose'. Or not tight enough.
