Query for you good folk in Australia. I'm planning a trip to Sydney in mid October 2018 to visit a mate. We're going to be riding to Tasmania and doing a bit of a tour there and back for a couple of weeks. I've been to Oz before (rode from Perth to Darwin) - at the time I rented a bike as that seemed the easiest option.

I'm happy to look to do that again, but the choice is limited to GS and the occasional RT. Nothing against these - fine bikes both - but I ride a K13R here in the UK and wondered whether buying something over there (and then leaving it in Sydney after the trip for my pal to sell) might be a better option. I don't necessarily want another K13 to ride, but think there might be other options to consider.

I can't seem to find out much about insurance options for a Pom on a tourist visa. Too messy an option, and stick to a rental, or something to explore further?

Thanks in advance for any advice or guidance you can give.

Trev

Re: Australia

hey Trev, October 2018 is a long way off! but nothing like forward planning!

Firstly, are you planning to go to the Moto GP at Phillip Island? that is usually towards the end of October. so you are planning to arrive mid october, then your riding in a time frame with loads of other bikes on the road, not a problem, but more police and more demand for accomodation around that time.
There are a few bike hire places in Sydney, the range of bikes available is nothing spectacular, but Garners bike hire, who operate out of Melbourne and recently opened a branch in Sydney have a wider range of bikes, and may be able to offer some of their Melbourne rentals out of Sydney. For something different they have a BMW S1000XR, an FJR1300, they even have a 2006 R1 with gear rack and bag if you keen, prices are reasonable too. Link here... http://www.garnersmotorcycles.com.au...urne_bikes.htm
other hire places out of sydney.. Hiring a bike for 2 weeks is going to cost you around $3,000
https://www.uek.com.au/
http://www.bikescape.com.au/bikes/

As for buying a bike and selling it...... there are plently of K1300R and K1300S bikes for sale, you could grab a bike with 30,000km on it and screw them down to $12,000 easy.
A few floating around with 70,000km/ish for $8,000 ish at the moment.
BUT, you may have a long wait to sell it. With your trip 18 months away, and the K1300 range discontinued, there may be less on offer by then.. or more... hard to say. The K1200's are going cheap but have bigger miles on them, around $6,000-10.
If you buy a bike and its registered and insured in your mates name, then your covered to ride it. Personal health insurance will come under you travel insurance setup. Anyway, loads of bikes for sale in Sydney.
With all the interest in our Australian rally from overseas riders, its almost worth me buying another K1300 and charging it out at the same rate as a GS....... it would take a bit to pay itself off... not sure how that will run past the wife either...... maybe start a thread when the time is closer... "Any Aussies want to rent there K1300 for 2 weeks"

anyway...... have a look at those rental options

Re: Australia

That's great advice - thanks, Mat. I'll have a look at the rental places you suggest. If you're thinking about renting a bike out.... I'm definitely in!

Thanks again

Re: Australia

Great advice Mat
Trev, you have plenty of time so study www.bikesales.com.au.
Plenty of bikes down under to choose from, and yes, insuring under your mate's name will cover you at no extra cost in most cases, unlike the UK.

Re: Australia

Many thanks once again, fellas. My pal and I are looking at both rental and buying something (big enough to keep up with his Rocket 3 - the modern behemoth, not the BSA triple). We're not planning to do the MotoGP, but ride through the Snowy Mountains and have a tour round Tasmania, then back to Sydney - couple to three weeks or so.

Any recommended roads/sights that you's recommend that I build in to the itinerary? Some of the roads look stunning, but that's based on nothing more than a virtual bimble using Google Maps...

Thanks again

Trev

Re: Australia

Not to worry - still in the planning stage, but bike rental booked, accommodation sorted. All that's left is to sell my first born to afford the air fare...

Happy days.
