Cold start idle issues

The bike starts but idle is weak and sometimes stalls on first start/cold start of the day - then steadiness as bike warms up - does not occur at all when warmed up or out on road on stop and gos. Only use premium gas (several tanks now this season) and run techron on occasion - have not changed any fueling patterns - in two seasons, this is a first. Any ideas?

Re: Cold start idle issues

The idle control air valves (and their stepper motor) in the airbox probably need recalibration. The GS-911 has a program that does this automatically. You cannot do it manually.

Re: Cold start idle issues

What year is your bike, and how many miles? And more importantly, exactly what 'cold' temperature are you talking about? And did the bike start fine at those temperatures before, or is it the first time? BMWs are known not to like cold starts. My ex-K1200RS stalled at anything under 40F. Even after getting the ECU reprogrammed, it still almost stalled near freezing. I never ride below freezing on purpose, but sometimes on mountain trips, it's near freezing early in the morning even in spring and fall.

No issues with my '09 K1300S yet, but the coldest I've started it is at 37F. Idle was lower than it should initially, but at least it didn't get close to stalling. My bike had the ECU reprogramming to avoid the known stalling issue after chopping the throttle, which was fixed with a very annoying rev-hang. Maybe it also had the cold-start parameters widened. Anyway, if it didn't do it before and it's doing it now, then an idle recalibration should take care of the problem. You could always try disconnecting the battery for half an hour, and see what happens. Otherwise it's GS-911 time. Good luck, and keep us posted.

Re: Cold start idle issues

Thanks for the information - I'm wondering why this is occuring now and/or what causes this to occur? The bike is a 2011 bought new in 2012 and only has 13 000 kilometres and has had its scheduled 10k maintenance at 11 500 and otherwise runs perfectly.

Cold start meaning first start of the day not actually cold weather start.

Thanks again - I guess I'm heading to the dealer...

Pierre

Re: Cold start idle issues

Dealer recalibatred the idle control and stepper motors - but to no avail, still stalling on first starts. Considering doing and ECU update..

Re: Cold start idle issues

I am assuming that you have run a few good doses of fuel injector cleaner through it?

Re: Cold start idle issues

Yup, I run techron every other tank fill up and use only premium gas..again, it is only on the first start - every other start and runtime is A1.

Typical BMW issue. Happened on my KRS. And I haven't started the K13S cold enough to stall, but you can tell the cold enrichment map is not quite right on this bike at lower temperatures either. Coldest start has been 35, while sitting outside a motel, and it stumbled a little bit, but caught up quickly after that. The good news is I don't plan to ever ride at a lower temperature. The bad news is 10 lower, and it'd probably stall. BMW needs to adjust the cold parameters lower, since many folks ride at freezing temperatures. Wonder if the K16s have this behavior as well .

Re: Cold start idle issues

What's interesting is that in the two seasons I've ridden, it only presented itself now. Last season, even in 0-5 degrees, first start of the day, no issues.

Sluggish starts as of late - had the dealer test and then replace the battery - so far so good.

Re: Cold start idle issues

Just came back from a run to POrt Dover and satyed over night in White River. It was
-5C at the motel, frost all over the bike and it fired right up. Let it warm up till I saw 2 bars on the guage and took off.......slowly! A little CHILLEA.
Seems to handle that range no problem.
