K1300S Front ESA?

Have a quick general question before I bring this to Bobs BMW for investigation. This is in regards to ESA setup on a 2011 K1300S.

Does ESA affect both front and rear shock settings on the 2011 K1300S? Or is it a rear shock feature only and the front is a standard non-electronic shock?

I own a GS-911 and decided to investigate the ESA adjustment settings. I received the following feedback from the computer:

Front Sensor Position: 0
Front Sensor Maximum: 0
Rear Sensor Position: 135
Rear Sensor Maximum: 3372

I selected to reset the rear and it did it's travel thing and calibrated itself. However when I went to reset the Front it said it could not communicate with the ESA module. Leading me to this post. Could my ESA module be broken on the front of the bike, or is ESA a rear only setup on the 2011 K1300S?

Thanks for your help, sorry of this is a silly question but I do not have my owners manual in front of me here to read up on the ESA setup in advance.

Re: K1300S Front ESA?

Yes, ESA controls both front and rear shocks. http://www.i-bmw.com/showthread.php?t=17111

Re: K1300S Front ESA?

Might be as simple as a connector but looks like a warranty problem.

Re: K1300S Front ESA?

The preload is only for the rear. That could be what those numbers mean. If there was a problem with the front shock, I'd imagine the GS-911 should have read the appropriate code; did you check for DTCs? I'd wait until somebody else with a GS-911 can tell you for sure there's a problem, before wasting your time with a dealer. I don't have a GS-911, or I'd be able to answer your question. Good luck.

Re: K1300S Front ESA?

Problem resolved on my 2011 K1300S, and I am passing on this answer in any others with my bike post the same issue:

David,
Thank you for contacting Bobís BMW. I passed your question off to a Certified Technician and his reply. ESA, Front= damping only, REAR= damping and pre-load. Calibration is for spring pre-load only available at rear. Position sensor only at rear. I hope this has cleared and answered your question.

Thanks,

Great. That matches what the Rider's Manual says for the ESA on my 2013.
