K1220 RS Oil Leak

I have an oil leak in the lower front of my K1200 RS. It is on the left side in front of the exhaust pipes. I have lost about 1/2 of the site glass for just under 200 miles. I can't figure out where or how to get a picture into this thread.

Thanks
Randell

Re: K1220 RS Oil Leak

Perhaps the valve cover gasket, could also be an oil cooler line, or fitting..might even be the cam chain cover. Won't actually know till the body works off, cleaned up a bit to get a better idea.

Re: K1220 RS Oil Leak

Previous posts on the subject indicate the early 2000's K1200RS is notorious for this leak. Happens between the junction of the timing cover at the intersection of head and block. I have my timing cover off now, trying to stop that same leak. The bike will make a hell of a mess inside the belly pan/on the floor.

Here are two threads that may help you, the first reference has a description of how one member solved his problem in detail, the second thread is a longer discussion but less of a hot to.

Re: K1220 RS Oil Leak

Slap a blob of RTV on that seam.Smoothen it flush with the head/crankcase.Let it set.

Use Loctite 518 to seal the cover.Been there...3 times.

First time:Fixed the leak as in replaced the crappy mushy BMW sealer with the much better Loctite product.
Second time:Chain rail liner inspection.
Third time:Replaced the liner altough I shouldn't have.Very little wear at 180,000 kms.

Never leaked and sure isn't now at 250,000kms.
