Vanity Plate- Are you kidding??!!

So, upon purchasing the ultimate hooligan bike and realizing after riding it that it truly is the ultimate hooligan bike, I decided it would only be appropriate to get a vanity plate for it. Living in PA, I had to print out some forms and fill out my top 3 choices- with a max of 5 letters.
My choices: HLIGN, HULGN, HOLGN
I received a phone call several weeks ago from the DMV- they wanted to know what the letters stood for. I told them- and I could tell that the person taking the information down had no idea that hooligan was even a word in the English dictionary. They informed me that it would have to go before the 'board for review', and that it would take a few more weeks.
Yesterday, I received some paperwork in the mail from the DMV Specialty Plates Division. A copy of my original paperwork was enclosed with the following written beside each choice: DENIED, DENIED, DENIED.
What??!! They enlosed a paper that I would have to fill out if I wanted my $20 application fee back (is that really necessary?? just send it the f*ck back!), or I could make the appropriate changes and reapply. I called the DMV to see what the appropriate changes would be- was it that my choices were already taken or that they did not like the word hooligan?
Apparently, HOOLIGAN is a forbidden word. HOOLIGAN! Wow, what is this country coming to? I then questioned that if I reapplied with the same choices, but said that they were the initials of my children's names if that would work... but no. Once it has been rejected, always rejected. So much for freedom of speech. Hope their vanity plates are approved- ASSHL.
Too freaking funny, and yet ridiculous all at the same time! May the HOOLIGANS live on!

Re: Vanity Plate- Are you kidding??!!

As I understand it, our friends from the land of Oz refer to the same species as ''HOONS." It may not be as obvious but, ''A rose by any name...would still be a Hooligan.''

Re: Vanity Plate- Are you kidding??!!

I would just re-apply as if it never happened. It is a huge bureaucracy, the next time the BMV clerk may simply approve the plate w/ out bring it up to any review or the board may all of the sudden approve it. They approved my car's "OT ВUHTA" that means something in my native language. Initially they thought that's a profanity (which definitely is not) and it got denied at a BMV location I tried to register it initially. So, I just tried the same at a different location... My explanation "that's how my wife calls me" worked that time and I got the plate

Btw, I'm seriously considering CGFRE or CAGFR for "cage-free" for my bike, but only having 5 letters make too obscure...

Re: Vanity Plate- Are you kidding??!!

Hooligan running into the Twentymile River near Portage Alaska. Commonly called "hooligan" in Alaska, eulachon are oily fish that were traditionally used as candles when dried and placed in stone holders. The small fish typically gather in large schools off the mouths streams to spawn during May in Southcentral Alaska. Until the 1900s, large groups of Native Alaskans gathered along rivers to catch and dry the fish and extract their oil using simple presses. Today, hooligan are important as a subsistence species. They are frozen, dried and smoked mostly for human consumption. You use a dip net while standing out in the river to land them.

Very interesting. Good luck convincing the DMV in PA that you want a vanity plate for fish candles.

I read an article a while ago where a vanity plate in Utah was removed from use after several years because it said 'MERLOT'. You can't have 'drug' names on vanity plates either.

Re: Vanity Plate- Are you kidding??!!

Simply get yourself elected Governor in Illinois and you can personally make whatever plate you may desire as part of the state benefits which go with the job.

You would have been ok if you had told them it was the proposed name of your kid's soccer team.

Reminds me of the newest aggravation in town here at all the C stores where they bust us seniors for our birthdates when we buy beer. I've become fond of giving them my zip code instead and pretending to not understand the question. They still sell me the beer but it really messes with them.

There's a guy here that rides a GS and has FYYFF. I forgot what he said he
wrote down it meant on the application.
There was an Elvis impersonator that had ELVIS. He couldn't keep them on the car
and finally gave it up.

FWIW, I don't want someone to remember my tag number so I never got one. Plus,
they want an extra $40 a year.

Well, then there is the gang that applies for and gets MMWNMW or plates like that. Try to read that at speed. We have quite a few like that in IL.

What a bunch of complete idiots. First, you have to tell them what the abreviation stands for, before they can deny it!

Re: Vanity Plate- Are you kidding??!!

I read a blog about a guy in NY who used to have "NO TAG". He got rid of it after over a year and 300+ parking tickets, every time a parking attendant would write "no tag" on a ticket, the ticket would send it to him. Was not bad at first, he could show he hadn't been in that area, but it ended up getting old.

Re: Vanity Plate- Are you kidding??!!

While I am not much of a vanity plate person myself, I am peturbed by the idea you can't have something as innocent as "hooligan" on your plate in PA. I am tempted to start applying for a bunch of off the wall tags just to annoy someone.

BTW, My Tuono R is the ultimate hooligan bike but the K is a damn fine machine

Re: Vanity Plate- Are you kidding??!!

Vanity plates are just another heat score. why draw attention to your self? A generic number is much harder to remember than a catchy vanity plate. All it takes is some righteous ass ,cell phoning the cops because you lane split and passed him in rush hour traffic. Or a cop with radar etc.

Just think... your taxes actually pay for a board that reviews vanity applications. I'm sure another board to review the first board's decisions is not too far in the future...

Re: Vanity Plate- Are you kidding??!!

While I was attending undergrad, in the faculty/staff parking I saw a vanity plate that read FYUOCUK with a frame that read, 'read between the lines.' Not sure how that made it past the review board!

Re: Vanity Plate- Are you kidding??!!

Hey man:

First off, why am I even here, posting on the R board. I ride a S. Oh well.

How 'bout [DENIED]? It's like the bike is so bad-ass of a Hooligan Sled, it's f**kin' DENIED by the f**kin' state!

I'm just an old guy (63 in August) so I have the license plate [OXCART] on my K-sled. That's because I ride totally-ass legal and have never crossed the double yellow ONCE! (I'm still here, right?) Oh yeah. Plug OXCART into Google and see what comes up (A-12).

Here are a couple other suggestions:

BOHICA (next time tell the f**kers that the initials stand for: Bravo Oscar Hotel India Charlie Alpha)

ME163 (a volatile, dangerous, rocket powered, point-defense weapon)

FTW (free the whales)

WAIT! WAIT! The perfect license plate for a K1200R (why didn't I think of this earlier?) is (drum roll) [STUKA]!!

Seeya
ATB

Oh yeah: The Reverend Wayne tells me that FYYFF stands for "Foreign Youth Yearning for Freedom." FOX ALPHA!

Don't knock the vanity plates...

Makes reading them so much easier before you stop them for anything.

"Power" or "1QXE-233", I know which one I'll get right

Re: Vanity Plate- Are you kidding??!!

You're better off without a vanity plate anyways. I can see your choice drawing attention to yourself in certain situations where you would rather not come off as a hooligan. In other words don't count on getting any warnings when pulled over with that plate.

Haha, I'll pass that along to my dad. Like I said, he really wanted FIGMO (as the original saying was that) but had to "settle" for FYGMO. I don't think the Ohio DMV asked him what it meant or they probably wouldn't have gave it to him.

There was a girl here in Creston that had one of those odd little boxy Scions, and her plate was WTFISIT I'm surprised the DOT missed that one.

Re: Vanity Plate- Are you kidding??!!

I was denied "GNS ZUP" and "GNZ ZUP" for our Texas Tech daughter's plate. They said the phrase "Guns Up", the battle cry of the Tech Red Raiders, was too violent for approval.

I should've sent in another request for "FK AUF" just to see what they would do.

Best regards to all,

JS
