Any Iphone users here thinking about the upgrade to 3.0??

I started to download the new 3.0 software for my Iphone. After about fourty minutes I got an error message on the computer about the server timing out. I found I could no longer access the download site, I would get a time-out error message but could not re-try as the Iphone icon would then be gone. I closed Itunes and tried repeatedly with no luck. I then found the phone was locked-up and usless, displaying only a screen with a usb plug and an arrow pointing to an Itunes logo. This indicactes it was in recovery mode, WTF. How did they come up with that? Tried calling local Apple retail outlets but they were all ahead of me, none answering the phone today.
I finally got into the hold line at Apple and shorly after actually getting someone on the line the phone came alive again. Apparently it had to re-activate, but there was no indication of such. I assumed wrongly, that the phone was back in service and I ended the call.
I then noticed that all of my downloaded applications were gone and when I went to the app store they would show as installed, but with the "installed" button greyed out, so I couldn't even re-download the free ones! Another call and another fourty minutes and Apple as a "courtesy" would allow me a "one time" download for all of the missing apps. Let's see they screw it up an as a courtesy to me will help undo their screwup!
I am still waiting for the email to instruct me as to how to complete the reinstallation of the apps their upgrade dropped!

So much for Apple being user friendly and trouble free.

Two and a half hours and counting.

Re: Any Iphone users here thinking about the upgrade to 3.0??

Wow! Tough luck!

FWIW, I'm very eager to try out the 3.0 features on my first gen iPhone.

But I'd never try it in the first couple of days - swamped servers and unexpected bugs seem to be the (unfortunate) norm.

I hope to get a new iPhone 3G S soon, probably around my birthday in August. Again, wait for the unavoidable bugs to get worked out first.

Good luck, and welcome to the bleeding edge!

Re: Any Iphone users here thinking about the upgrade to 3.0??

I have a 1st gen iPhone. I've had it since September 07 and haven't had any problems with it. I'm picking up a 3gs Friday morning at my local apple store.

Re: Any Iphone users here thinking about the upgrade to 3.0??

I got mine updated once iTunes finally allowed it at 10:25 AM PST.
The new features to 1st Gen are 'Meh'
Still no Internet Data Tethering in the USA - ATT sux!

I most likely won't replace it with the new 3G S since the ATT Network in SoCal is horrible.
Constant dropped calls & poor 3G coverage.
And, being an existing customer you have to pay full price for a new iPhone.

You may actually have them on your phone. I had the same reaction as you. I thought none of my apps were there. It turned out that there are now several pages of apps. Where I had 2, I now have 3 app pages and a search page. You might try scrolling left>right and seeing if anything appears.
I only had 1 app on page 3 but a full page on 4. They're all there, though.

If you have had the iphone since Aug, Sep, or Oct. of '07, at&t is allowing existing owners to take advantage of the new customer pricing.

Re: Any Iphone users here thinking about the upgrade to 3.0??

Apple somewhat consistently underestimates DEMAND for their products and ramp up servers and support personnel for launches but it isn't enough. By 24-36 hours after launch, the demand drops precipitously and things run smoothly. I had no prob with the 3.0 update but it was slow. The new features mostly rock that I have tried so far including cut and paste, landscape keyboard, voice notes and stereo bluetooth.

Not many phones I know out there where you get free expanded functionality updates and over 20,000 free or minimal cost applications.

If your phone ever has problems like an interrupted update, it is VERY easy to restore from the automatic backup the phone performs before the update even begins.

For all you bad news bears, I did mine last night in 45 minutes. No sweat.

Didn't mean to hijack the thread with good news. Continue your critiques and nay saying and conspiracy talk.

Soon as they go Verizon - I'm in! AT&T SUX in Boston.
BTW; and of the 20,000 apps the myriad of 16 year old kids with nothing to do create for free that Apple lures would be customers in with, what are the most useful?

AT&T has gotten much better service in the south shore in the last year or two, it is still hit or mis in Boston. I find the iphone gets better reception than other at&t phones my friends have.

WOW! This is the FIRST time I have heard anyone brag that the iPhone was a good phone....it has the reputation of being good at many things, but not at being a good phone. I have many friends that love the iPhone but admit that the reception and sound quality as compared to other decent phones (not the freebie throw aways) just sucks.

IMHO, combine that with AT&T and you are in big trouble! I had way fewer dropped calls on both Verizon and Sprint and I live in Atlanta, where AT&T Mobile claims as their home!

In major metro areas, Sprint was by far the best reception I have had, but, get into the boonies and both AT&T and Verizon are far better. When you look at the overall reception in and out of cities, I think Verizon stands alone (and, my AT&T contract JUST expired! I am looking!).

Re: Any Iphone users here thinking about the upgrade to 3.0??

My town signed an agreement with a company based out of new York for utility pole mounted cell towers and just about everywhere in my area I have great reception. AT&T wouldn't be my pick if I had a choice with the iPhone by it's worked great for me.

My understanding is that if you are one year into your contract there is a $200 premium $200+$199=$399?

If u are 1 year in it would be $200 and the price of the phone but if u bought it over a year and a half ago they are allowing the first time buyer price of $199 for the 16gb or $299 for the 32 gb. I spoke with at&t Monday and that was the info I received.

Coverage varies for sure, Verizon sucks here. Had both for awhile, both were OK around the highway and city but Verizon dropped sharply off the corridor.

Most useful to me are ones that allow me to view MRI/CT/Rad and overlay them OsiriX. Epocrates, full scalable and pinch and expandable browser that ties to server EMR, ACC guidlines, Medical Spanish, oh and the one that makes a light saber flash and sound For you

Haven't heard that one about "It's a lousy phone" since the very first iPhone and then it was the minority of reviews. I never noticed any difference compared to Motorola phones in reception, dropped calls or sound quality. Have used various RAZR's etc, still do on the family plan and a TREO Pearl. The Pearl REALLY sucked as a phone, went back before the 15 day return. Must be regional, regarding coverage. Friends have great prices and service with ALTEL and Sprint around ALB and they come up here to the tundra and crickets. I had Singular in 2003 and the reception in and around ATL downtown was good. It sucked compared to Verizon around Daytona. About 2 years ago ATT was fine around Daytona so the network must have expanded quite a bit.

Not surprising the Windows affectionados don't like the iPhone. Like the Hyabusa and the iPod , everyone is trying to play catch up. The "iPhone Killer" isn't out there yet.

Honestly, I don't know. I'm interested in the tri-state area, and Palm Beach to Miami. They've got me covered.
