Think this is the first time for anything like this. If you purchase a used (BMW?) motorcycle from a BMW dealer in Britain, it (can) comes with a 12 month warranty. Probably won't help (might hurt) private sales; but, maybe dealers will be in a better postion to offer higher trade-ins if their used inventory moves a little faster.

Wonder if this program will be extended by BMW to other international markets?

The BMW Preparation Charter The BMW Preparation Charter is your assurance that your BMW Approved Used Bike has been closely examined and prepared by BMW technicians before you take delivery.

Full vehicle preparation includes an extensive check of every aspect of the bike by skilled technicians. A full road test identifies any mechanical faults, which are rectified using genuine BMW parts. A full valet prior to delivery is also standard procedure.

Our servicing policy ensures that each BMW Approved Used Bike has a full service history in accordance with BMW recommendations. If any bike has a service due within 1,000 miles, it will receive the appropriate service prior to delivery. Also, an independent vehicle history check certifies that the bike has not been stolen or written off, and is not subject to any outstanding finance agreement.

Finally an independent vehicle mileage check certifies that a thorough mileage verification check has been performed on the bike.

Every BMW Approved Used Bike is prepared to the highest standards by skilled BMW technicians. Each bike undergoes a rigorous BMW Approved Used Bike Check procedure including a full road test, after which any mechanical faults are rectified using genuine parts. As a result, all factory fitted equipment is in full working order and every tyre has a minimum tread depth of 3mm. Paintwork is restored to a standard appropriate to the vehicle's age and mileage, and your bike receives a full valet prior to delivery.


The BMW Approved Used Bike Warranty We believe the minimum 12 months unlimited mileage warranty covering every BMW Approved Used Bike is the finest of its type available. This is hardly surprising when you consider that the warranty is backed not by a third party but by the same company that designed and built the bikes themselves – BMW.

These features have been developed to address specific issues raised by used bike buyers, and reflect our commitment to deliver total customer confidence. In fact, the BMW Approved Used Bike Warranty is so comprehensive, and so close to our New Bike Warranty that the only items not covered are routine service items, such as brake pads and discs. Full Service History To qualify as a BMW Approved Used Bike, your vehicle must have been maintained in strict adherence to BMW servicing recommendations. In addition, any BMW bike with a service due within 1,000 miles has the appropriate service carried out prior to delivery.


Independent Vehicle History Check* A vehicle history check is carried out on every BMW Approved Used Bike to ensure that the bike has not been stolen or written-off, and is not subject to any outstanding finance agreement. A certificate confirming that these checks have been made is supplied with each vehicle. (*It is not possible to verify the mileage and vehicle history for bikes first registered outside the UK prior to their date of import).


Independent Vechicle Mileage Check* Every BMW Approved Used Bike also undergoes an independent check to verify its recorded mileage. You will be supplied with a certificate confirming that a mileage investigation has been carried out on your vehicle.

Europe-wide BMW Emergency Service Cover BMW Emergency Service has been designed to provide 24 hour assistance for motoring emergencies in the UK and Continental Europe. It is highly unlikely that your BMW Approved Used Bike will break down, but you can be confident that BMW Emergency Service will look after you, your pillion and your vehicle should the unthinkable happen.

Just imagine you are returning from a touring holiday in Southern Italy with your wife. You are the only qualified driver in the party, and are suddenly taken ill with food poisoning. Your wife needs to be back at work in 48 hours.

One call to BMW Emergency Service will secure the necessary medical treatment for you. Should you need to be transferred to a hospital in the UK , BMW Emergency Service will arrange this and will also arrange for a qualified driver to return your wife, vehicle and your personal belongings safely back home.


BMW Commitment We are completely confident in the quality of the BMW Approved Used Bikes. In the unlikely event that a demonstrable fault arises within the first 30 days/1000 miles of your ownership (whichever is sooner) and we are unable to resolve it, you will be entitled to an exchange, or a refund if an appropriate exchange cannot be found**.

WOW! This is a first for motorcycles....Mercedes, BMW and Lexus have been doing "Certified" used cars for a long time.

I agree, this could help on trade-ins...since someone pays for this, it may even help private sales since the bikes at the dealers should go up in price.

It is a good scheme and it works well, but there are a couple of knock on disadvantages...

Because BMW dealers can't sell anything without the workshops having given the bike a good service / workout to ensure everything is tip top (good for customers) this work has to be paid for and adds quite a bit to the sale price (not so good for customers).

Second point is because technicians time has to be paid for the dealers are offering lower than normal trade-in values, knowing that they have to cover the technicians time (costs) by adding this to the sale price and the dealers would argue they need to keep the sale price realistic.

This is more or less paraphrased from my friend who heads up the local sales team. Having said all of that he gave me a great deal on my new K12S last year.. even when BMW dealers do not give deals!

However all said and done, it is great to be able to buy a pre-owned BMW motorcycle knowing that it comes with a full BMW warranty - good piece of mind.

I thought this was pretty amazing stuff, too. Maybe BMW is trying it out in Britain first.

You know, BMW has such appealing used motorcycles that buyers in that market might be more inclined to acquire a used Beemer. Those original K12RS's, for instance, the ones between '98 and 2001 were such neat bikes; bet they would sell well out of a BMW dealer, reconditioned, with a 12 month warranty.

Its interesting that you note this type of program was basically reserved for high end and very expensive cars. Many of us have suggested that the higher price of BMW motorcycles reflects it's high place amongst all bikes. This sort of thing can't help but reinforce this claim.

I would rather ride a yellow/check '98 K12RS than an FJR!

What's the old expression: "I'd rather apologize once for the price than a hundred times for the quality..." (or lack of durability)!

Think I'm going to print out the details of the program in the first post and give it to my local dealer.
