Leathers?

Curious what the group does gear-wise for serious riding, say a weekend trip or a BMW rally:

1. One piece leather suit.
2. Two piece leather suit.
3. One piece textile suit.
4. Two piece textile suit
5. Leather or textile jacket, jeans, gloves, boots.
6. Shorts and flops - Obamacare will fix me for free.
7. It's W's fault.

BLPD.

Motoport UltraMesh Kevlar. Fugly but flows a tremendous amount of air. Here in FL I don't usually even don rain gear during the summer.

Re: Leathers?

The poll is missing an option that is very common in Europe - leather pants and textile jacket.

They're not fugly when they fit. Just sayin'. Seriously, a lot of newer members might not know that you bought yours in a size where you could fit a young lady in there with you. Hope springs eternal..good on ya, mate!

Thanks Bill. I'm afraid of getting them altered for fear of gaining the weight again. I was joking with Eddie and Becky that I lost as much as either of them currently weigh!

Re: Leathers?

I checked lots of things in the poll because...

In hottest summer the coolest thing I have is ventilated 1 piece leather suit I got for track use. For a day ride it is the most comfortable and transparent for ease of use gear I have. One peice things just seem to feel better on the bike. Even a two piece zipped seems better than unzipped. So if I have to be in 100+ degree weather it does a nice job.

But then I generally wear two piece leather ventilated or not depending upon the temperature. Not all my jackets, match to all my pants (I have some zippers to sew as mates but just haven't). If I am off the bike, it is easier to shed the jacket.
I will use thicker base layers as weather cools and move to gear that is less and less ventilated. For cool days days.. 35-50 it is usually leather pants, textile jacket with fuzzy base layer. Once under 35 it is textile over pants added to the mix.

My general preference for comfort on a longer ride, without too many worries and stops, is a one piece leather. My choice for riding and for the ride.

Re: Leathers?

I use both two piece leathers and a two piece textile suit. The leathers for most UK riding and any track days, and the textile suit when it's very hot - it's a BMW Rallye suit with any number of vents. When we leave for our BBOT Tour on Saturday I'll probably be wearing the textile suit.

Re: Leathers?

Love the Revit Ignition stuff. Part textile, part leather. Though I got a killer deal on a Dainese leather jacket last year... Besides it's functionality, it just plain looks bitchen', so it is what I wear most io the time with my Revit ignition leather/textile pants. I also have a pair of Kevlar jeans but don't always feel safe in them- use em for short rides at reduced speeds. BTW, I see Revzilla has some sales going on for Dainese stuff- up to 20% off.

Agreed - can't have just one.

I've done several of these, including variations on the euro themes (textile top, leather bottom, leather top, textile bottom) as well as variations on the above - Vanson Avenger jacket and Sport Rider pant for non-commute, and 1pc 'Stich for commute.

Currently it's ComfortShell for non-commute riding, and one of two different 2pc 'Stiches for the commute (trade off and distribute wear/tear)

I've tried all the 'Stich knockoffs and still, nothing beats one for utility use. If you told me I had to get rid of all my other gear and could only ride in *one* thing for all seasons and conditions, it'd be a 2pc 'Stich.

Re: Leathers?

S. Florida here, several absurdly hot summers in a row...
Well, the k1200s foot peg heat certainly discourages the shorts/flipflop rig that us such prevalent sport bike garb here... I must admit to the BMW men's club lightweight leather jacket, which does have passable CE and I have inserted optimal back pad.
I am really looking forward to cooler weather, though its hard to believe that our two short weeks of winter will actually feel too cold in my perforated Alpinestar one-piece.

Re: Leathers?

I have a two piece leather riding suit with full pads, knees, elbows, shoulders, back, that I wear pretty much anytime I'm going for a ride of any consequence. I deal with the heat by opening vents, and with the cold with Gerbing heated hear. Carry a rainsuit in the tankbag, but generally don't need it in So Cal.

I admit, that if I'm meeting friends for a Sunday a.m. breakfast I'll substitute the leather pants for kevlar lined jeans, yeah I should know better.

Alpinestars one piece for track and play, full backprotecter, pucks, etc
Two Piece Stitch (w/ back, knee, shoulder, hip T-foam stuff) for commute and touring type rides. Would do a one piece if I did it again, I never detach them except to wash and renew the waterproofing. But then, I haven't done a single rally since I got it 7 years ago, either.

Looking at some track schools, rallies, etc. surely some of the combo leather/textile gear like the rev-it ignition 2 jacket and pants would pass inspection?

It depends on the org. Many are focused on the circumference of the zipper between the garments and less on the material the garment's made out of.

Re: Leathers?

NESBA says no for their track days. From NESBA.com....

o Leather riding suit; for a two piece suit a full circumference zipper is required. Airmesh-style suits (where you can see your skin
through them) will NOT be permitted in any group. Textile suits like Areostich are only allowed in the Intro group. All other
groups are required to have leather riding gear.

Tell it brother George! Same attire for me except no Aerostich...for the occassional commute (all 17 minutes of it) I use textile armoured over-pants and leather perfed or full leather jacket depending on temps.

As an aside George can testify to the virtues of one-piece leathers for track get-offs. Sorry man. But they do work.

Heavy leather jacket by Golden Bear, jeans, boots (engineer style) and gloves. Almost always. I do remember the days of riding with a bare head, letting the wind comb my hair, short sleeve shirt. Always wore some kind of boot.

With brutal summers and cold winters, totally different gear choices. Answered the poll for cooler riding, with a 2-piece textile suit with Sidi Strada (tall) boots. In summer is a mesh jacket and draggin' jeans, and short vented Sidi boots. Have several other jackets, but don't use them anymore, so will put them up for sale one of these days .

I generally wear a two-piece textile combo (FirstGear jacket and Joe Rocket pants), but have been looking at an Aerostitch one-piece for some time now. I am a little surprised at how low they scored in the poll. I thought the one-piece "Stitch" was synonymous with BMW riders.

Seen alot of Aerostitch when we used to attend the MOA rallies. This is an entirely different crowd!

The folks here are the more performance oriented and sexy crowd. Go over to some of other sites and enter in the conversation about how bad it is to go 8 over the limit or even consider a dyl cross in a curve or pass, they wear the "stitch".

-shrugs- I have a couple of Stiches now, and have had three in total. They're great for commuting. I use one probably three days a week.

If I'm going to be on the bike to *be on the bike* I wear something different. Not because the 'Stich is a bad garment; in fact, there's many convenience features they have that I've yet to find implemented *as well* on any other garment. It's because I want more temperature flexibility than it provides (basically 50-75degF). By the time ambient temps start pushing 80degF, I don't want to be in a Stich; I'd rather be in my ComfortShell.

Re: Leathers?

Thanks for the input everyone, I like the features and usability of the stitch but am not ready for that stage of my life

Plus, I must admit that I'm far too sexy to wear a one-piece

Re: Leathers?

When I did the granite ditch thing at SGR this year, I was wearing my two piece Atlantis leathers. Not a scratch on the leathers at all...lots of grey dust, but no damage to the suit. Regarding the top end armor in this suit...would it surprise you to know that my ribs were broken in the areas unprotected by armor, right up to the border of where the armor started in the back?

Now, my BMW textile might well have fared the same, not really sure, because I did not really slide, just hit like a load of brick, but all my suits have the same armor...The orange colored CE armor...this stuff is pliable and soft, until it is impacted, when it instantly stiffens...probably saved me further injury.

Re: Leathers?

Greetings from Sydney DownUnder,
The weather here is pretty predictable as we have four distinct seasons in one year.
I also wear the Atlantis 4 two piece leather suit, works really well for three quarters of the year (3 seasons) over here in Sydney it is just a bit too hot in the heart of summer when daily temps are between 27 c - 40 c
Regardless of the temperature I wear it when ever I'm touring as its absolutely waterproof, (no need to stop and change kit when it rains) takes whatever nature throws at it, dust, mud, stones, birds and even a kangaroo but that's another story and can be cleaned ever so easily. If I get too hot I slip the zipper for some air, don the air flow Rev'iT gloves together with a well ventilated helmet. If I cool my head I'm fine whatever the outside temperature..
In summer I wear the BMW Airflow suit, Olympia Air Glide pants and a pair of BMW Air flow boots.
I agree the orange BMW armour is the best; makes you feel really secure although I'm trying my hardest to avoiding testing it!

Re: Leathers?

Need to put in a shameless plug - I bought a Mototport Air Mesh Kevlar jacket 2 years ago, but lost some weight and am trying to get rid of it now. Originally $667, asking $225, but will consider lower offers. See the ad at:

Leathers two piece.
Schwabenleder custom made in my colors and with my name on it. This is the preferred gear especially for long rides. In case I expect too much rain or in spring/fall with temperatures below 50 I go with BMW RalleyPro Goretext gear.

Re: Leathers?

With the crazy New England weather I like the versatility of my Olympia textile jacket and pants. It vents well in summer and seems to seal up well in winter. I was good with the normal liner and a good base layer last week at 28 degrees.

I do seem to get a little to warm in the summer on the GT because of the giant lack of air behind the screen. I am going to look for a mesh jacket this year that could hopefully handle the swings of temperature I can see in a day.

Re: Leathers?

I wear leather as much as possible. Mostly use my Vanson perforated . Early spring when the weather is colder and rain is likely I wear textile(with heat). Again in late fall/winter textile(with heat).

Tomorrow I'm going out for a ride and if lucky it will be in the 20's for a high - no screwing around - textile and heat.

Re: Leathers?

I've got a variety of moto clothing...

~ Alpinestars leather jacket & pants
~ Klim Traverse jacket & pants (textile - full GORE-TEX® and my main dual-sport kit)
~ AVG Sport Tempest jacket (textile - waterproof membrane/layer) & Telluride H2O pants (textile - removable waterproof internal membrane)
~ Alpinestars mesh jacket & pants (textile - for very hot weather riding)
~ FirstGear/Warm & Safe heating jacket/pants liners

And now, I'm contemplating the flagship Aerostich Transit jacket & pants (GORE-TEX® Pro Shell Leather )... yeah, I'm a gear nut. I want to travel this season with ONE set of riding gear, but want very good/superior rain protection and the Transit just may be my solution. I've read nothing but good reviews and, while NOT cheap, Aerostich's price for the combo comes in lower than a lot of comparable Gore-Tex textile gear (including the new Alpinestars Tech ST).

http://www.aerostich.com/jackets-pants/transit

If it's good enough for Neil Peart, it's probably good enough for me

Just my dos pesos...

Re: Leathers?

As my research continues, I'm now leaning towards the Rev'it Ignition 2 jacket and Gear 2 pants...

I just need to get back down to Erico Motorsports (the local Rev'it dealer) and try the pants back on... this time with my Sidi Discovery boots to make sure there's no issue at the cuff. Erico will match Revzilla's price out the door, so I'm sorely tempted. I like the fit and features of the Ignition 2/Gear 2 combo (not to mention price compared with the Aerostich Transit stuff). I just wish the pants/cuff zipper was as long as the Transit's pants/cuff zipper... that's a very cool feature; makes for easy on/off with my big boots.

Ended up getting this combo, but from Revzilla. Jacket is here, pants back-ordered, but drop-shipping from REV'IT! tomorrow. Just need some of this snow to melt so I can go test ride the new gear.

I had a chance to put a couple hundred miles on the REV'IT Ignition 2/Gear 2 combo this month. I didn't want to get them sized too large, but wanted room... lucked out and my heated liners fit underneath pretty well, so it's now a 4 season riding suit! Well... I should say "technically" since I haven't had the pleasure of riding in 90+ temps with it yet.

I think Debbie would love it and she would look stunning as well! Leather and mesh all in one and perfect for the RMR in July. I haven't had a chance to try it out just yet as there has been this white stuff on the ground and what looks like alot of ground pepper on the roads. I will be wearing it to BRPR!

Ain't you sweet! It is supposed to be warmer this weekend and may have to get out. While the cold doesn't bother us, they really pepper the roads here when that white stuff falls from the sky!

Re: Leathers?

Fellow Riders,

Leather or Textile .. I have both, But you should all check out Competition Accessories
The have something I find very interesting, Cortech Adrenaline jacket & pants ........
Cortech has really stepped up in the past few years .... internal & external body armour
zip-together full perforation, leather. I have had my hands on this stuff very nicely made
high quality ... there race suits are VERY nice, same quality,Sportbike trackgear also has
the same gear .... you can get some VERY nice gear for not alot of money .....
just some more info .....
