Mobil 1 has changed their formulation (rumored)

For those of us who routinely use Mobil1 in our boxers, here is some news regarding Exxon-Mobil and the rumored change from PAO and ester base stocks to Group III base stocks. If you use Mobil1 EP oils in your boxer, you'll be facscinated with the discussions here..........These guys are even using gas chromatographs to prove their points.......

Ever since Mobile lost theor lawsuit against Castrol (they objected to the fact that Castrol "synth" was made from Group III base stock instead of being truly synthesized), and the court decided that the word "synthetic" was related to oil performace, not exactly how it was made, most manufacturers of "synthetic" oils switched to using Group III base. Mobil 1 was one of the last holdouts.

Checked into the Mobil 1 site and they are using " high performance fluids including PAOs". I guess that if we still want real synthetic (not the court definition but the stuff with PAO) we will have to switch to the Mobil 1 Extended performance, wich is quite expensive. Sad!

Re: Mobil 1 has changed their formulation (rumored)

It is the Mobil1 EP 15W-50 us boxer owners use that is rumored to have changed.

PAOs have skyrocketed in price recently likely spurring Exxon-Mobil's decision to move to Group III base stock (less costly). But, the jury still seems to be out as to the real answer. If you visit this site, you'll see a very informative debate that seems to indicate that our M1 we have relied on for so long is no longer PAO based.
