2012 K1300S Bar Risers/GPS Mount

Mark Edwards here, Palm Harbor, FL. Today I traded my brother's 2005 K1200S for a 2012 K1300S at Eurocycles of Tampa Bay. Two issues with the bike and it might be smart to address them ASAP. This bike has a $750 Wunderlich bar risers kit on it, and for about a week, the dealer will take it off for me for free if I want it taken off. Costs a couple hours mechanic's time to install it or take it off, and maybe some fluids work, I dunno. First off, is this a desirable piece of kit or not very popular? If I wanted to sell the risers off, what would you think this kit is worth used? Or is it smarter to leave them on?
Second problem, I have a Garmin 665 GPS I have and would like to mount it, what is the best going GPS mount setup for a bike like this? Previously I mounted this GPS on a 2003 K1200RS in a Touratech locking mount that centered over the steering stem and was perfect. This K1300S bike has an existing radar detector mount set on the left handlebar from the previous owner. I may resurrect that detector, not sure. It also has a radar jammer!

Would the Wunderlich bar risers interfere with the best GPS mount? I am 6'4" so the Wunderlich bar risers extension is debatable whether I like or not. Comments? Thanks in advance. Mark

Re: 2012 K1300S Bar Risers/GPS Mount

Hey Mark, it's a pity you didn't get a chance to try getting used to the stock K1300S bars, with most of the ergo's on these bikes a lot of us reccomended you give it a try for a while and see how you go. When the dealer says they can take them off, do you have the stock bars?.
Is there another K1300S with stock bars at the dealer that you can do a comparison with?
GPS..... Not sure , when I do a "Garmin 665 mount" search on eBay the basic motorbike mount says it's the same as the 660.

Cheers

Mark, I'm 6'3" and would highly recommend you try the factory set up. It is ideal and doesn't need any modification.
Regarding the GPS I would recommend this set up for you:

Re: 2012 K1300S Bar Risers/GPS Mount

Thanks! Yes I rode a factory setup for a few days when I rode my brother's 2005 K1200S which I presume the K1300S stock bars would be about the same feel, and my intuition is that I like the stock bars better, and the bike is sportier that way, better looking, better handling, and simpler is good anyhow. Safer as well. I could see how some riders like the risers though, and I was wanting your feedback! If you ride straight roads all day the risers may be more practical, but I bought the bike because it is a rather large upgrade in features and quality of ride from the 2005 model and I had an emotional need to get rid of the 2005 model because it was my brother's bike and he died last year of heart attack (51 years old) I have a chance to get the stock bars back and I am gonna pursue that! The risers are great for shorter riders and for people that don't want to lean into the tank, for back problems or whatever. I guess I will eventually try to sell off the Wunderlich kit as the dealer told me they are sought after.

Re: 2012 K1300S Bar Risers/GPS Mount

Mark, IMO, I would take the bike home with the risers on, and a set of the stock bars as your trade. Try the risers out, have the dealer set the bike up as stock, and sell the risers to offset your costs of acquisition. They are worth a pretty penny and someone will buy them from you for sure. Don't tell the dealer what your motive is, just preserve your position with their offer.

Here is a link to Pirate's page...check out the BikePenR mount. I've seen it mounted and in use, and it's real trick.

Re: 2012 K1300S Bar Risers/GPS Mount

OP, this is whaat I did to mount my GPS unit, and or anything I want to mount that uses this type of system

first get one of these

http://www.rammount.com/part/RAM-B-342U

toss everything but the part with the ball

then look at my pictures to see what I did with that part

http://s93.photobucket.com/user/Gate...ry/RAM%20Mount

you will need one of these as well

http://www.rammount.com/part/RAM-B-201U

and then what ever you are going to mount on top of that

Re: 2012 K1300S Bar Risers/GPS Mount

Yay! Today the previously used bars were recovered from the previous owner, and I got an appointment with the dealer set up to put them on the bike. I will get the Wunderlich pieces back from them when it is over and will be able to sell those, which should be pretty good for me I guess. yeah the dealer showed me the rammount pieces today and after I get this handlebars situation straightened out (no pun intended), I am gonna pursue putting together one of these GPS mounts. It's all good, this bike is fantastic!

Re: 2012 K1300S Bar Risers/GPS Mount

Just following up, I got the previous bars put on which have a 1" rise (Helibars) and I got a locking GPS mount on the center bolt hole which is one of those Touratech setups. I put 8 GB SD card in my old Zumo 665 and I am in business! Mark

Re: 2012 K1300S Bar Risers/GPS Mount

I ordered the heli bars because the stock set up was not comfortable for me at 6-1, 220-lbs. Just putting on the Grip Puppies gave me relief from the lean and reach of 3/8-inch. The heli bars install with no wiring or change in handlebar set up as is. The 1-inch is so much better in comfort and handling. It was amazing for me.
I also ended up getting the Pirates Lair Garmin 590 stem mount ($185) but clean and one piece.
