Leaking Shock ?

Went to unload the bike from the truck and found this. The rear was pogoing (wrong word) as went around corners. I think the oil is coming from the Wilber Shock. They have over 70,000 miles on them. I'm not sure I should put any more money into this bike. It's a year 2000. The ABS has not worked for over 60,000 miles. The odometer reads 146,000 miles. Might be time for a new or used motorcycle. decisions, decisions.

Re: Leaking Shock ?

Have the Wilbur rebuilt - get in touch with Ted at the Beemershop http://beemershop.com/ , have the shock rebuilt, it'll be a $200 - $400 hundred bucks, or buy a shock off ebay, either way is cheaper than a new bike.

Contact JJ for the guy he used in Florida for his Wilburís install. Much faster for you than Ted Porter. Young man, youíve got some riding to do this spring!

Re: Leaking Shock ?

Thatís a shame.

But with the Wilbers being rebuildable, that seems like a better choice than giving up on the bike.

Then again, our bikes are coming up on being 20 years old. Wiring and insulation degrade and get brittle, as do rubber and plastic parts. The bikes are worth so little on the used market, it does become an issue pouring money into them for major repairs.

So far so good with both K RAPIDO and my sidecar rig, but Iím holding my breath waiting for that mechanical Sword of Damocles to descend and put the ball in my court. And if and when that time comes, thereís really nothing out there thatís calling out to me as a replacement.

Joe, you da man! I have an appointment with Herman to take off - rebuild both shocks - re install, all in one day. I'll truck it down and back. $150 each shock and 3 or 4 hundred for the install. I'm a happy camper

Thanks to all you guys for the response.

If you want to save a few hundred dollars, pulling those shocks is not a huge deal.

I’d be happy to help.

My 00 KRS is also the best motorcycle I've ever had but it's 18 years old and a little heavy. I want lighter and some electronics.
She might have to do for a little while longer.

Re: Leaking Shock ?

As far as the non functioning ABS on the US 2000 models, the whole ABS unit can be replaced for way less than a new bike or doctor bill...... Mine failed at around 35,000 miles and I had it replaced with a used unit I picked up from a dismantler (info at the time from Pirate - Finley). Had the dealer replace it while there to do a warranty seal replacement. I think I got the unit for about $400 way back then. So, I am guessing, maybe $1000 for a used unit and Paying someone to do the work, since it sounds like you may not have the facilities or background. But, mine have worked perfectly for another 15+ years and another 105,000 miles. Had my Wilbers' rebuilt by Ted about 3 years ago and all is perfect still! I had the newer ('09 K13S) faster, more electronically endowed for a bit....LOVED it, but other things in life made me make a choice and I could get waaay more resale on the K13S than on the RS at that time.
It does take a bit of upkeep to keep the older bikes going, but still less expensive than a new one...so far.

Thanks to all you guys for the response.

Is the shockectomy on schedule? You should ask him to set them up for you after theyíre installed, but I would assume he would do this as part of the service.

Re: Leaking Shock ?

"shockectomy" Has been completed. I trucked the bike down to Edgewater, Florida and Herman took them off, rebuilt them and reinstalled them. I was in at 9:00 AM and out at 4:00 PM. $150 for the front and $230 for the rear. Apparently I buggered up the shaft on the rear shock and had to replace it. $300 to remove and replace. Add taxes and I now have new shocks for a total of $729.53.

Herman is a nice guy and offers many products and services.
http://www.wheelsandwings.net/home.html

Bike is still on truck. I don't have time right now to take it off and go for a ride.
Shocks are set at 13 clicks. I'll adjust them as needed.

I'm going to learn to live with this motorcycle for at least a year. I'm saving my money to buy me a S 1000 R next year for my birthday. Hopefully when the 2019's come out I can get a deal on a 2017 or 2018.

Re: Leaking Shock ?

Finally got out for a short ride this evening. Before I left the driveway I could feel a difference. The bike feels tight. I was not being very aggressive so that test will have to wait. This was much cheaper than buying a new bike but not the same. Hopefully the old girl will get me down the road for another year.

I highly recommend Herman at Wheels and Wings.

Wow... removed, rebuilt & reinstalled in a day. Wish Hermie was closer!!!

Glad to hear the old girl is feeling frisky again Pete!

That's someone who deserves an endorsement!

Re: Leaking Shock ?

Glad you got the shocks done and are riding it again. For sure the better bike to ride to San Miguel de Allende (assuming we actually make that move this year....construction did restart this week!!!). While I know you will absolutely love the S1000RR, it probably is not a 1,000 mile a day type ride...
Enjoy the KRS for the next year or so.
