The Devil Made Me Do It!

I'm guessing by the time you've all read through this post, many of you will think even less of me than you already do... if that's possible.

As a K40 platform devotee, I love everything about it... the performance, the stability & handling, the instant power, its sport touring ability, the look, braking & the instant power. Did I mention instant power?? It has to be one of the best sport touring bikes in the history of bikes & sport touring. If I ever got another bike to replace the KS, I'd be hard pressed not to get a K13S... I like it that much.

Having said all that, there are some who go through life & at some point, feel they've reached a crossroad or significant milestone, perhaps even a life changing event or maybe even nirvana. One minute you're Bruce Jenner & the next thing you know, you realize you've been living a lie for the last 66 years & no longer have a need for your meat & two veg! Or maybe even like some members here... one day they woke up & were suddenly "curious" about what's up with the other team. I probably shouldn't name names, but Kenny once "experimented" but eventually came back. Joe & Martin crossed over & never looked back, while Mani & John are now switch hitters.

I'd be lying if I didn't say, I too have found myself curious at times & finally succumbed to the temptation of the dark side & last Saturday, drove down to Austin to look at an R1150GS I'd been looking at on CL. A really clean 2001 model with only 25K miles that came with side cases & top case & was reasonably priced. I got it from the 2nd owner who used it mainly for commuting to & from work. Not sure what it is or why, but I find this particular model more pleasing to the eye than the newer models.

Before I laid my money down, I took it for a spin around the guy's neighborhood to get a feel for the riding position, power delivery, handing... you know, the norm. Very different from what I'm used to on the K12S or the LeMans. So I'm riding on a one-way, 2 lane road & a guy ahead of me about 2 car lengths, got in the median turn lane to turn left as I switched to the right lane. While I was looking over my shoulder, that asshole decides he really wanted to turn right. When I looked back, he had crossed 2 lanes of traffic & was right in my lane directly in front of me. I was going about 35 & hit the brakes hard. I really thought I was going to hit the guy & at the last second I turned the wheel to the left just enough to miss him by about a foot as he went by. I just about shit! Very close call.

So, I too have joined the ranks of the curious and the dark side as the dark forces finally wore me down. I'm anxious to do some dual sporting & explore some of the dirt/gravel roads I've passed by on the K bike, maybe do a trip where most of the journey is on the back roads... already have an invitation from K1DUDE. Suddenly my garage is looking pretty small. Gonna have to do some rearranging in there to squeeze everybody in.

It's yellow and it's got cylinders sticking out the side like Gary's Rthing. Do you think you can keep up?

Re: The Devil Made Me Do It!

Great find Curt. We LOVE the S but our bodies doesn't fit it as well as they once did. From have the GS back in 2015 it was comfortable and kinda nice to have a "go anywhere" bike. Who knows what the future may bring.

For the ultimate in off the beaten path riding checkout the Trans American Trail (TAT). Also checkout advrider lots of great ride information on that forum in regards to adventure bikes and trip planning.

The R1150 platform is well established and still preferred by many GS riders. Great looking bike, enjoy!

I put this together ne boring day. The new R1250GS fits right between the K1200RS and K1300S. What's amazing is how much bikes have gained in the hp/weight area since the 80s.

This pretty much sums up my feelings. As much as I love my old RT I've been wanting to do some off road riding to expand the CO riding experience. It looks like you scored a nice bike Curt and I'm envious!

Now if I can only get this Bruce Jenner image out of my mind.......
