Bohemian Rhapsody review

OK, if there is a movie to see this holiday season, this is it. I really never was a big fan of "Queen", and didn't know much about the band aside from Freddie Mercury dying of an AIDS related illness in the early 90's. Yet I sure recognize and like much of their music. The story of Freddie Mercury is fascinating and Rami Malek was terrific in the roll. Maybe die hard Queen fans might find the film lacking for one reason or another, but from my perspective both the film and Malek are Academy Award worthy.

Craig:
Thanks for the review - like you I was not a Queen fan but of course know the music and have been thinking I should go see this movie.

Might just go in the next day or so.

Re: Bohemian Rhapsody review

I saw the movie with my wife and it was great. Malek is amazing. However, be cautioned that the movie is not very historically accurate and is from the point of view of the guitarist and the drummer of the band as they own all the rights to the songs. I'm not sure Freddie Mercury's version of their story would have been the same. The biggest error is that Freddie was not diagnosed with AIDS until years after the Live Aid concert so the whole scene where he tells his band mates he has "it" and they "carry on" is total BS. Read more here: https://screenrant.com/bohemian-rhap...eddie-mercury/

Regardless, if you are even a remote fan of their music it's worth seeing. It was enjoyable just from that aspect.

Re: Bohemian Rhapsody review

I too saw the movie. My wife was/is a big fan of Queen and insisted we go and see it. My take is the same as Craigs'. Excellent film with great type casting.
After we got home I viewed the 30 minute or so YouTube video of the actual Live Aid performance that ended the movie and it was really difficult to tell the difference between the film version and the actual event. For those who have seen the film I strongly suggest watching that video.
Def a film worth seeing IMHO.

Thanks Craig. I haven't seen the movie and don't know if it is addressed but Brian May has a PHD in astrophysics.

Yes that was mentioned, as was the fact that the bass guitar player, John Deacon was an electrical engineer, and drummer Roger Taylor was in dental school.

Definitely worth seeing in a theater for the big screen and sound system.

I'd have to agree, go see it! Went last night with the Mrs. and we really enjoyed it. They took many liberties but you came away with a feel good high from the music and the story they did tell.

Re: Bohemian Rhapsody review

I went yesterday to see it. I also thought it was a good movie. Not knowing a lot about Queen the story line was fine for me - it may not be exactly correct but it worked for the movie.

Re: Bohemian Rhapsody review

As a life-long Queen fan, I simply had to go see it in the IMAX. Historical and chronological inaccuracies as others have noted, but definitely worth seeing for Rami Malek's amazing performance, and the big music.

I also highly recommend watching the actual Live Aid show (YouTube) before seeing the movie -- the closing scene is incredible.

Re: Bohemian Rhapsody review

It was a fantastic movie! I loved the music. I liked Queen but found myself being reminded of some great tunes that had not been heard for a while!

Re: Bohemian Rhapsody review

The movie was good. My wife picked it as something to do on her actual birthday, so I pretty much had to go. Everything about the movie experience was just about perfect, starting with the buttered popcorn and the special, upscale seating in the theater. I actually enjoyed the movie. Now I will be less likely to immediately switch the station when Queen comes on.

On Saturday we drove into Jazz Alley in Seattle to see Taj Mahal, as another part of my wife's birthday celebration. Usually she drives us into town in her Subaru X-Trek for artsy-fartsy performances, but I drove us in in my F-150 because it was her birthday. I enjoyed that one, also. Especially the prime rib dinner before the show.

Re: Bohemian Rhapsody review

Great movies for all the good reasons mentioned above. Historical bends are irrelevant as this is not a documentary and it doesn't need to be 100% accurate to keep the entertainment and fascination as it actually did.

The best part, the really great joyful part, of it was that I went to see it with two of my sons, those ones are 18 and 10 years old, and hearing the youngest humming with the music definitely brought a tear or two on my checks. Call me emotional, but this was a great moment I am so happy to have lived and shared with them.
