Best service manual for K1200RS?

Is the Clymer manual OK for the K1200RS? I'm not going to be doing any in-depth mechanics -- just normal maintenance stuff.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/15...KIKX0DER&psc=1

Suggestions?

Clymer manual is fine in fact very good. You can get a BMW service manual on DVD as well for little money and just maybe free. Someone here may have one they no longer need.

Thanks.

I have a BMW service manual on DVD for my 2005 K1200S and it is almost impossible to navigate thru. It takes me 30 mins to find what I need. Is the K1200RS DVD manual simpler?

I just found these online:

I don't think the RS DVD is any easier than your K1200S DVD.

What I have done in the past is either bring my lap top out to the garage or simply printed the pages I needed.

If you get a Clymer manual you should be all set.

I recommend the Clymer manual. I have the CD, rarely refer to it. Most of the questions I have have already been answered in the tech forum, usually in thoughtful and excellent threads. You've posted this question in the tech forum, using the "search this forum" button, link here, http://www.i-bmw.com/forumdisplay.ph...to_forumsearch will usually lead you to the promised land.

Thanks for the offer -- I appreciate it.
But I was able to download a PDF file of the BMW factory service manual for the K1200RS.

Re: Best service manual for K1200RS?

That .pdf file will do you good, especially in concert with the Clymer. I would not do anything 'in depth' without both. I love the Clymer, but sometimes the Factory manual really helps add clarity and you can print out just the pages you need and not get anything else a grimy, I have it hard copy and a .pdf file. I do not have the factory CD and have always heard what you have, tough to negotiate. If you were to only have one manual.....Clymer. The factory manual is like my first 'Statics' text in Civil Engineering.....lots of things are 'intuitively obvious'...great on specifics, but not necessarily how to get there from here. So, I recommend you pick up the Clymer and use it as your 'go to' manual, backing up with the Factory manual. Good Wrenching!

I just ordered the Clymer manual. Thanks for the recommendation.
And to the other folks in this thread who suggested getting the Clymer manual, I thank you too.

Good choice! I have 2004 K1200 GT and use both the Clymer and a hard copy BMW K1200 RS workshop manual I bought via fleabay from a guy in the USA who was closing down his workshop. Wouldn't be caught dead in the garage without them. Sorry, gratuitous advice follows: use both, always, even on small stuff; and search the threads here for the "warp and weft" that's been woven over time by people far more knowledgeable than I. I find that a beer can help too.

One thing Clymer doesn't have is the installation instructions to that Staintune Exhaust system for sale in the Classifieds!
I figured that thing would be gone by now! Nice though!

Re: Best service manual for K1200RS?

I'm with you on that front. The Staintune's are fabulous exhausts - sound great and sure do polish up nicely. That one looks in slightly better nick than my one (but not 1400 US dollars better). I'm a bit surprised its still there too, maybe there aren't that many of us left who still need them?

Re: Best service manual for K1200RS?

I spent over a $100 on the BMW DVD. Found it almost worthless. this site, you tube, and Google search much better. A 30 dollar Clymer or Haines might be worth it.

Re: Best service manual for K1200RS?

Well, I'm have the K1200RS DVD, and BMW R90/6 hardcopy manuals, but will probably be buying a Haynes or Clymer or other soon, for both my K1200RS and R90/6.

Any suggestions as to which aftermarket manuals would be preferable?

For the K1200RS (all years) , K1200LT , K1200GT (2003-2005) there is only ONE aftermarket choice: it is the very good CLYMER workshop manual. CLYMER has a lot more details and photos than the factory workshop manual (factory manual being available as PDF files on a CD).

For my K1200RS, I have both the CLYMER and the factory BMW manual. I always cross-check / confirm in both manuals - in 99% cases there is always more info in the CLYMER. Only minor annoyances of the CLYMER are:
- a few mistakes in torque values for bolts / nuts
- a few mistakes in their electrical diagrams. Still better than the BMW factory manual that has ZERO electrical diagrams.

For the "boxer" twins (/5 and /6 and later), there are 2 aftermarket choices:
(1) a CLYMER workshop manual covering all air-cooled twins from 1970 to 1996. You can find many older/earlier editions of same manual covering 1970-1983 on EBAY or AMAZON (in new of used condition for a fairly cheap price)

(2) a HAYNES workshop manual covering all air-cooled twins from 1970 to 1996. Not sure if this is still available as new (it may be out of print). I can see it on the HAYNES UK web site, but AMAZON and EBAY seem to show mainly older or used editions.

I think Clymer bought Haynes recently?

I have both the Haynes and Clymer for the Airheads.Haynes sucks....!I lent both to a friend if just for an oil/filter change on a R100RT.Good thing I showed up when he was doing the job,he was going by Haynes only....!
